In any case, it seemed like everyone at the top had at least double twizzles in the footwork last season; and from what I've seen this year (which is only Lake Placid), the trend seems to be that teams are including two sets within the footwork now. Maybe the commentators will clarify.

Yes, looks to me like this season you don't have to include a double twizzle, whereas last season you had to: see 2016-17 requirements under 4.6.2. for stsq level 3 style A "Footwork includes at least 7 Difficult Turns (one of which being a Double Twizzle ..."

I guess the idea behind the change is to encourage choreographical diversity, ie that not every single team would be doing the same double twizzles in every stsq, but we'll see about that...

The dance season?

As far as I know, the first international dance competition of the year was the Lake Placid International held in July (McNamara & Carpenter, the Parsons, Pogrebinsky & Benoit, Mueller & Dieck, Torn & Partanen, etc).

This week a bunch of teams training in Quebec are also competing (Fournier-Beaudry & Sorenson, Smart & Diaz, Lauriault & Le Gac, Soucisse & Firus, etc).

At the same time a bunch of teams in the Detroit/Chicago area are competing (Muramoto & Reed, Nazarova & Nikitin, Hawayek & Baker, Abachkina & Thauron).

Maybe they're off to the ballet? Bukin is in tights no less. This is just their last season ex though, so maybe much shouldn't be made of it.

oh, I did not know it, you can tell that I don't watch much exhibitions, and while watching it I remembered why.

I don't remember that. Their last season exhibition was actually latin style, and their costumes were very different. Or have I forgotten some older ex? Either that, or this is something new (definitely not a competitive program, though). Anyway, the start of the season that they mention must be some exhibition skate.

I understand you. But, while most competitive skaters do either easy, "entertaining"/dancy programs or some slow lyrical stuff with some of their usual easier elements/elements from their competitive programs, there are also some good, even great and interesting ones. Usually those are from skaters who care about exhibitions and think of them as an opportunity to do something different, to make "art", often from the more active professional skaters. So there are some good things that you miss out on if you are not watching exhibitions at all. I think probably the only way how to not miss out on all the good exhibition programs, but at the same time avoid watching all the bad, boring or insignificant ones, is either to know which skaters to watch, or make/seek out special threads where skating fans give links to their favorite exhibitions (there is no guarantee that all of them will be to your taste, though).
 
Every time I comes to this thread I feel some kind of desperation... hoping for the team with the X quality will finally appear.

Was it so hard for Zhulin to put together two decent short dances? S/K's is fine but what did he do to B/S? I know we had these thoughts initially, but I truly expected him to surprise us. Also why are the lifts for both teams so blah and laboured? Why not choose something more creative that requires less brute strength? So far, team Gadbois has team Russia beat. Oh wait we haven't seen S/B yet. :coffee:
