Nathan Chen

I knew Nathan was going to improve by leaps and bounds this off season... and he definitely has. Well done.

I'd like to praise Nathan for being original! His programs feel fresh and engaging! It's a breath of fresh air in a season of repeats.

Us Nathan fans new he had it in him to do two programs like that last season when everyone bashed him. Last season it was all a matter of the inferior programs and just allowing someone fresh out of juniors a chance to grow. And speaking of growing, I can't wait to see what these two programs will look like by the end of the season. Bravo Nathan!

"the intoxicating effects of first love and celebrity, the pain of exile, and ultimately the triumph of individual endeavor over ideology."
from IMDB about Nathan's FS music origin.

that is the the word come to my mind, just after I watched Nathan's FS without knowing what the music is, it is kinda visceral.
After I researched a bit about the music background. it has other layers of meaning now.
I applaud Nathan.
This winder OG season is gonna be interesting.
My ONLY hope is that sincere, beautiful work of art or technique can has the opportunity to blossom into its full potential and grace the widest audience possible.

Before the comp, Nathan said this.

The American did four different quads last season -- toe, salchow, flip and lutz. He has been working on the quad loop but said it is "not my main priority right now."

So when I heard reports that he was landing his 4Lo, I just knew he wouldn't put it in his long even though that's never been his style. Well, color me shocked. I think Nathan's game is to keep his cards close to his chest. No point of his competitors knowing his long game. By the time they learn it, it will be too late to emulate it.

Yes. My biggest fear right now is actually if he does win the OG he'll just retire from skating - he seems like such an ambitious and determined guy in everything he does. That would be such a shame because that would deprive us of witnessing the incredible growth he could have as an artist on the ice. Two years on the senior circuit for someone as gifted as him is just unimaginable.

He clearly trolled most of us.

It's possible. Despite his many injuries, he's pushing for quads. It seems from what he's said, he'd rather have a short glory-filled career, than a long one. We should respect his wish to retire when the time comes.

Ya know, Nathan usually trolls us all, so you never know.

but seriously, too many aspects decides whether a skater can stay as long as our fans wishes or even their own wishes.... As skating fan, I mostly just pray:ghug:
after being in this skating community as a skating fan for a few years now, more and more I felt this is the only thing I may do...

Until now I wasn't familiar with the movie "Mao's Last Dancer," but now that I know what it's about (a Chinese ballet dancer who defected to the West) it really was an inspired choice of music.

With the 4Lo now in his arsenal and possible -4T combos in the future, Nathan's potential layouts make YOI layouts look juniorish.

I personally think its historical background is in the past, but its meaning in current days is universal.
I think besides its motto "Before you can fly, you have to be free"
it also means that true form of arts, be it ballet or skating, it is transcendental and inspires beyond borders of any kind.

but I do have some concern, this type of music is more difficult to interpret, especially in a OG atmosphere, considering other male skater's FS music choice.
Hope Nathan can hold onto it.

^^ check out "Mao's last Dancer" in wiki
this is its motto "Before you can fly, you have to be free."
this is the interview from the writer/dancer himself. I believe it is from biographic novel.

Well more of a pure biography, not a fictional novel. The dancer is Le Cunxin. He grew up during the Mao years, and aside from being an interesting story about artistic freedom and such, the book offers fascinating insights into the Chinese transition from Mao to a more open society. He was chosen from a small village for the honor of training at Mao's academy - he had to leave home at a very early age. The story of his early years in Mao's dance school are memorable, including the "revolutionary ballets" that were developed - Mao's vision of usurping toxic Western dance and adapting for Chinese Communism.

When he defected, he didn't expect to ever see his family again. Gradually, he was allowed to send gifts to his parents (the story of the refrigerator pops to mind), and eventually visit his parents and perform in the small village and on larger stages in China.

Highly recommended reading. I also saw the movie, but as in most cases, the movie isn't as good as the book.
