2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:drama: This is why I don't have Instagram, I don't get who it works. So, is Rudy gone too? That's all I really care about. If he's gone, I can't imagine Polina will make the team. Rudy knows her skating better than anyone, Including Christy Ness..

You can see coach Christy Ness here @8:47 after Kristi skated for Olympic gold at Albertville in 1992: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvb7QJJqLd4

I sure don't prefer Zagitova to Medvedeva. Zagitova skates with a piked waist pretty much throughout her programs, particularly when she jumps. It appears as if she is constantly looking down at the ice. Yes, she consistently skates clean, and she outdoes Medvedeva when it comes to backloading: (all of Zag's jumps are in the bonus, while two of Medved's jumps are at the beginning of the program). But that bent-over posture is a turnoff for me.

Yes, Zagitova's program looks a little frantic to me. I don't enjoy watching it--she's hunched and shoving in one element after another. The program doesn't breathe--and if you're doing Swan Lake, you need a more legato, stretched-out quality or it doesn't work as a performance, though it's an impressive athletic feat.

You all may be sorry/not sorry, but I wouldn't know Zagitova if I tripped over her in the street and she introduced herself, I don't follow the Russian ladies, and I don't care. Perhaps this discussion should be in the Russian ladies forum, where folks presumably do care?

Do we have any news about the US ladies?

There was a press conference today with Mirai, Karen, Ashley, and Mariah. Ashley talked about changing her program back to MR. Mirai talked about her 3A.

^^ I really liked Mirai's answers. Such an intelligent young lady, answers those questions heads on with real content/opinion, authenticity, dignity, composure and charm.

Watching the press conference now, trying to get through Adam'a answer about his foot/recovery... watching Ashley and Mirai try their best to appear interested in his answer is getting me through it.

Wasn't the second part supposed to be yesterday? I know it was just ice dance and pairs (and Vincent I think), but if anyone has the link, please share.

Does American government support US Olympic athletes or Olympic sports federations?

I think USOC is mostly funded by corporate sponsors. It's why Coke and McDonalds start promoting the olympics and athletes every two years.

This is unthinkable on so many levels, I don't even know where to start. :palmf:

I don't have a problem with it. It's how nearly all major non-profits are funded. Through corporate donations. They don't have a say in what's done with the federation. But I thinks it's important that the USOC is free from government funds. Being under threat of being cut off by congress could potentially destroy Team USA.

I don't know a lot about skating but, I know that Nike, Porsche, Wilson, and Adidas are all sponsors for Tennis players. They give the players, Outfits, Gear, and even Cars if they win an event. I think about that clip from Tonya's upcoming movie when she says "'If you can come up with $5,000 for a costume, than I won't have to make one." I find that line to be very telling. I guess I was lucky to be dancing in the 80's when ripped jeans, Hi-tops, and a stringy tank top was considered cool.....

Here is a link to USOC's financial documents if you're really curious:

To keep it relevant to the U.S. Ladies...which ladies have sponsors? I know that Ashley has a few...but any of the others have one?

I don't know if Gracie still has them but I know she had them at one point. I'll check. Here's a link to an article about Olympic Sponsors and Gracie. http://money.cnn.com/gallery/news/2014/02/19/sochi-olympic-athletes/index.html

Alexia Paganini, formerly represented US, will compete this week for an Olympic spot for her new country (Switzerland?) . It'll be cool if she makes it!

Of course she will. Most recently, she won Slovenian Open. Now she has a good chance to win Nebelhorn Trophy or be at least in the top3.
