Ashley Wagner

Moulin Rouge 3.0 from interclub skate this weekend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-CqZTvyyqU

Overall she looks good for this time of year. She scored around 133 which is decent for the mistakes she made in this performance (obviously a little inflated, this would score a 128 or something internationally which is on par with Ashley's typical fall skates). She easily lost 10 points between the popped salchow, two footed lutz and missing 2-toe in the 2a-2toe combo. While I don't think this skate had the impact of 2016 Worlds or 2015 Nationals, I do expect it to improve as the stakes get higher. Overall I felt her jumps looked a bit bigger than last season as well.

I agree. I think that her spins looked a bit better too. But I was hoping to see more changes to the choreography. Seems to be basically the same with a few tiny changes.

just watched the program and Ashley is in the right place for this time of the olympic year. i never get tired of her Moulin Rouge - it's a signiture piece and it'll be amazing by the olympics. i hope she gets 2 stellar outfits for the olympics.
She went back to the 2 programms that earned her personal bests - smart move.

I'm really happy to hear (both) your evaluations of the jumps and spins.:hap10: I'm sure that those tech issues are what she's been working really hard on, so it's good to hear about results. I noticed the spins, but I couldn't tell about the jumps ... except that I wondered if the small rink was hindering them.

I agree that the score is encouraging, considering the mistakes. Yay! :dance3:

I've watched the new choreo (on the floor, not ice) as she posted on instagram .. and I was also surprised not to see much of it. But on second thought, it's very new and not surprising if it isn't incorporated yet. She might need a lot more repetition to remember it.

Were either of you at the rink?

:thank: for the quick reports!

I was not at the rink-aaaaah! Wish I had known she would be there. Will have to wait til nationals unless I can make it to her training rink at some point.

Oh, that's too bad! I only read in yesterday's posts that she was there. If you do make it to her training link sometime, I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. I would love to be close enough to do that.

I've got my ticket to Skate America, so I'm really looking forward to seeing her then.

Will she change the dress? I hope she will reuse that red dress, it looks nice on her.

Doing this program for the 3rd time, she definitely needs a new dress. The red one is from the 2014-15 season. And IMO it doesn't have enough sparkle.

I also hope the dress will be new. I agree that using the program for the third time there really have to be some changes to it for it to work, some hopefully to the program itself but yes, some to the more superficial elements like the costume too.

Either way I'm really looking forward to seeing her compete this year! I feel like the wait already has been long...

Wow. I know rejuvenating a program is not a new concept but I'm disappointed that she is not embracing the LaLa Land music. The music was the best part of the movie for me. Moulin Rouge has lost its freshness for me. I wonder if she's struggling with some technical skills and needs something totally reliable and muscle-memory to be able to focus on hitting those jumps. I wish her well but this is making me concerned for her and her Olympic bid.

What she says is really interesting. It's about her feeling that she needed more emotional complexity than the she was getting with the LLL music, which she loved passionately. I do hope we see it sometime, maybe next year.

If anyone can create the emotional power, resonance and drama :drama: needed to reprise MR, I trust Ashley to be the one!:luv17: She worked with Shae-Lynne recently for new choreography. I'm sure it will take more time to develop, but I can hardly wait to see it this week-end.

Good luck at Skate Canada, Ashley! :hap10:

Wishing Ashley the best of luck at Skate Canada this weekend! I'm hoping we hear some practice reports prior to Friday when I'll eagerly be working from home and watching on the Olympic Channel!

Got on my Calgary to Regina flight, and my seat mate was Ashley! Others on the plane were Jason, Ro, Kori, Karen, Tammy, Brezina, Todd Sand (?). Wished Ashley good luck and we had a brief conversation about the book she was reading. She's a sweetheart.

What luck you had! What was she reading, if I may ask?

I think I'd rather not say. It wasn't anything controversial or anything like that. It caught my eye because it was a book I had just read with my book club. I was asking her if she was enjoying it.

OMG! How I envy you at this moment? Can you tell us more? But I am one of the people who reads a book on flights, so ....

Here she is practicing her SP this morning: She marked all the jumps, but she looks good. Energy and personality to spare!

I'm so happy that Ashley took back that SP.
That has been program that i have been watch over and over again from tube.
And every time i enjoy it like i see it first time.

Congratulations to Ashley on her Bronze Medal at Skate Canada!

Ashley showed incredible fight and spirit all through that skate. She performed beautifully to the music, told the story, enchanted the audience, some of whom stood for her. She kept going for whatever she could. That is true valiance.

:yay: Ashley !!!

I completely agree. I'm the same way with Moulin Rouge. Today's performance wasn't perfect, but I could see some new nuances; she's re-creating the program, and herself, every time she performs it. And it gave me chills and real emotion.
