A lot of it really has to do with junior skaters genuinely being juniorish skaters and hence not really getting all that highly rewarded in PCS. The PCS evaluation as a whole seems to completely change when going from juniors to seniors and the range becomes much larger. It can work both ways.


Personally, I don't see Zagitova scoring that highly in PCS, either. But she has some time to increase her standing.

So, Medvedeva's first GP was in United States. She got 70.92 (TES 39.66 PCS31.26)for the short programme. She had the fourth PCS score in the competition. Gold- 33.25, Miyhara-31.98 and Lip - 31.40.
She lost the free to Gold (137.41-68.48-68.93)
For the free program she got 135.09 - 68.93- 67.16. In the free she had the second PCS score after Gold.
Of course in some cases, the PCS scores are really objective and reflect the skating, but these is rarely :biggrin:

At the second event (COR), she had almost the same PCS scores: around 31 in the short, and 67-68 in the free.
But the differences in PCS's scores between participants weren't so big as now.
 
Honestly if Alina skates clean both the SP and FP i can see her scores be around what she got at Lombardia or Japan Open which could be well enough to win.

The first impression is key, this is her GP debut so it's important to avoid any mistake especially in the SP.
 
I think it's insane what's happening now with the PCS scores.... they are so inflated.
In 2015, the differences in PCS between competitors weren't so huge as now and I think reflected better the reality.

Can't call it correct comparing. Everything were changed. Evgenia's score at JGPF 2014 was only 123 points for the free porgram. Alina's score was 136 points. So, calculating this, Evgenia got +12 points in her first senior GP. Man, I'm afraid to add 12 points to Alina's score... Ah yes, I saw that score at Lombardia, I guess.

That's true. Back then, 31 was OK, 33 was still very good, 36 was in the top range. They've become very inflated and the differences massive for some reason. The requirements also seem far lower for high PCS these days.

I assume it's because they want it to appear as if Medvedeva really isn't ten miles above every competitor. But then again, her scores are pretty inflated as well.


At the time, I thought Yuna's Vancouver 2010 performance was absolutely magical, for instance - Both the SP as well as the FS. And I know everyone who watched it really loved both of these performances. Her PCS were 33.80 in the SP and 71.76 for the free. In those days, they seemingly intentionally allowed a ton of room for potential improvement. Nowadays, these are PCS you'd get for run of the mill programs with nothing special in them. They'd often even be considered failures. Maybe if you see a PCS of 33.80 for a top skater in SP you expect they had 2 falls. I don't understand why they have to give out 10s and 9.75s for all sorts of run of the mill performances.

What really changed? The rules are the same...

PCS are generally higher just because TES is generally higher, and PCS is made to contribute aound 50% of the total score. After ISU decrease base values of some tech elements, we will see those high PCS (9.75 and 10) less frequently.

Osmond with a stumble, a fall and a pop got 71.90 in PCS and the programme is not special at all I would say. I don't think these scores are justified.
The same for Med... with a fall PCS 76 average programme, nothing exceptional.

So in your logic if Alina gets around 80 TES (hopefully) her PCS should be also in the range of 75-80:biggrin:

Yeah, but when you can score more than 80 in TES, its 'not natural' (by the nature of PCS and its involment in total score) to score less then 70 in PCS. You can see even biger inflatation of PCS in men scoring (where for example Chen PCS are higher than Lambiels ever were), but when you can score 110+ in TES, PCS must keep pace with it to have same meaning in total score as TES, which is the point of PCS. When 70 become hard achiving score for ladies and 100 for men, PCS scores will became generally lower again.

Not every skater even now is getting high PCS, but lets say Zhenya (with 70 TES) and Caro (with 60 TES) PCS scores will be around 70, and Zagitova (with 73 TES) around 63, so again in proportion of max possible TES and what skater achieve on the ice. The point is - 9,5 and 10 will not be given so easily.
