2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Mirai is probably just as much a shoo-in as anyone else with the possible exception of Ashley. In the absence of an in-form Gracie and a fully-prepared Polina, NO ONE is a standout. Other than Ashley, Courtney Hicks is the only other recent GP medalwinner in decent form, but she tends to bomb at Nationals.

We have to see how Bradie does at SA. Lombardia scores were generally rather inflated. It would be interesting, though, if Bradie were to make the podium at Nationals and some other favorite didn't. I can hear the screaming now if Bradie was the one sent to the big O and the favorite was left at home....

Her 3 Lo has been on a downward slide since last year. I don't think it was the strict tech panel. She used to land it cleanly with out question. It has been a genuine issue not just a judging problem.

Ashley has had exactly one international competition since last year. Maybe we should wait until Skate America before declaring a trend for her 3 loop.

ETA: I just looked at protocols for 2017 Worlds. Ashley got full credit for all three of her 3loops and +GOE for both of them done as solos.

But what about the reigning national champ Karen Chen? What's going on with her and where does she stand?

Karen is Karen. She stands in control of her own destiny. A place on the podium at U.S. Nationals will get her on the team. (Even a fourth place finish from a GP-decorated Ashley, IMO, cannot kick Karen off). A place off the podium for Karen at U.S. Nationals probably won't be enough to earn her a spot unless someone ahead of her has not made their own case for selection. Karen's status might change if she has a super strong Skate America; but ultimately, she is in charge of her own destiny. If you are looking for consistency from her, you aren't likely to get it. If you are looking for an athlete with the ability to medal at Nationals and make the Olympics, you have one.

I was not just referring to this one competition. She had trouble with it last season too CoC (not just because of the tough tech panel there - it was clearly UR). They scored it clean at nationals but it looked UR there too

I think I’m gonna pull extra hard for Bradie to make this as messy as possible :dev2:

Skate America will answer a lot of questions on the ladies front. Ashley has the chance to get her tech score up, Karen can pull herself together ... We shall see.

I agree. This topic shall be revisited after the competition.

In the meantime, we'll get to see what shape Edmunds is in, and how she factors into all this (or perhaps whether she factors in *at all*).

You said: "Her 3 Lo has been on a downward slide since last year. I don't think it was the strict tech panel." So I reviewed protocols from the most recent competition that the "since" could start from. Perhaps you meant to say "starting" last year? But even then, citing just one instance of a 3loop issue with international judges?

Has sectionals started yet? I think that that pacific coast one is supposed to be tough!

Does poor Mariah have another competition before nationals?

:( & I always liked her loop. Thought it was her best jump tbh.

No, Sectionals haven't started yet. Easterns is scheduled as of 11/14 with actual competition starting tomorrow and start orders are up. Midwesterns is scheduled the same (starting 11/14) but no start orders are up yet. Pacific Coasts is scheduled to start 11/15 which means we'll probably see starting orders up tomorrow.

Does poor Mariah have another competition before nationals?

No. You can always check the USFS International Assignments page to see.

Does poor Mariah have another competition before nationals?

Assignments for Golden Spin have not been announced yet.

Mariah's OK. No need to label her as "poor Mariah." Her SB is higher than Ashley's medal-winning performance at SC, and Mariah has one win over Mirai. That should, IMO, be enough to put Mariah in the mix. She'll need to do the job at U.S. Nationals, and in her case, it would be better not to be third lest someone more decorated finishes below her; but Mariah is in the game.

I wouldn't worry or be too sad as yet. As was mentioned a few days ago, Ashley may have been concentrating a lot of her training on making her flip and lutz bigger and better, on not UR the 3T on the combo, and on improving her lutz edge. In fact, the B.Esp. commentators mentioned improvement on the lutz and how good her flip looked at SC.

After the loop trouble at SC, I have every confidence that Ashley's been polishing and shining up her loop again. Jumps don't often give me chills, but her 3loop always has, especially when it's at just the right sublime point in the music.

All sectionals start tomorrow (live streaming for all events on IN), with the seniors going later in the week. Pacific Coast is tough, but not as much as it looked a month ago. Some skaters now don't have to compete there because they recently got Senior Bs that will give them byes to Nationals: Courtney Hicks (Warsaw; this weekend) & Angela Wang (Talinn, next week). Caroline Zhang also is listed for Talinn, but IIRC, she already had a bye due to her Top 5 at 2017 Nationals.

I agree. This is how I look at the field so far:

Ashley
The uber Ashley fans say she is going to clean up the tech. The opposing side says she has been on a downward spiral. The truth of the matter is that she has been on a downward spiral since LY. She has been posting all these videos of her working on her spins but they are still so slow. BUT somehow Ashley always seems to peak with a home crowd. I firmly believe that she will clean up a bit for nationals AND will have some favorable calls from the tech panel. She has the MOST sponsors of the ladies and unless she lands lower than 4th, I cannot imagine the federation NOT sending her. My bet is that she lands in 3rd at nationals.

Polina
We haven't seen much of her - the next GP will be very telling but I will be surprised if she actually makes it higher than 5th at Nationals. I could even imagine a Mirai situation where she lands on the podium and they choose one of the other ladies over her. She has another cycle in her which might give the federation more reason to hold off on sending her this time especially if she has a poor outing in this next GP.

Mariah
She has beautiful qualities but reworking the technique this year was poorly timed and it looks like its affecting her confidence. All the commentators are saying it but she needs a coach that can actually focus on her. Kori was focused on Jason, Raf on Nathan, , , , Ashley, and Adam in that order. I cannot imagine her making the podium. And depending on who doesn't make the podium, if Mariah did, I also think the federation would choose another more prominent skater over her.

Mirai
I am personally biased (although she did exceed my prediction post for NHK!). Let's keep it real - the axel isn't a lock but the buzz is and she is riding that wave. The performance is not where it needs to be but she also has shown glimmers during NHK: a furrowed brow here, a smile there... I think NHK gave her a good confidence boost and she has timing on her hands. She has all this time to focus on training for nationals and yes, my girl Mirai is a head case but nobody can refute that she has been hitting that ice with a newfound determination. I think she is really taking ownership of her skating and I believe she has a really good shot of making the team.

Karen
The US is in a sea of head cases/inconsistencies. I think Karen (although it PAINS me to say it over my girl MN) has the highest potential to be in the final flight at the Olympics for the current crop of US ladies. She has the PCS when she is on and has the higher ceiling tech wise than Ashley. She has a chance to make once last case for herself at Skate America...

And just because people like to bring them out of the woodwork:

Bradie
It isn't going to happen.

Courtney
It isn't going to happen.

I might eat my words but at Skate America, no US lady will be higher than 2nd... but I honestly feel like it will be Karen in 2/3 and then Ashley one level below Karen. Said it.

Thats just my personal opinion but I feel like some die hards might come after me so if you do not hear from me again... It was nice posting 28 times.

The thing that makes me the sad is that Caroline Zhang was so unimportant, she didn't even warrant an "isn't going to happen."

Caroline ... I want her to go to Worlds or the Olympics, just once. :noshake:

Has sectionals started yet? I think that that pacific coast one is supposed to be tough! ...

All three sectionals have more than four senior ladies for whom advancing to nationals would be a realistic goal.
Hearts unfortunately are going to get broken at all three :(.

Good luck to all :yay:.

After your post :thank:, start orders for Midwesterns also were published:

Pacific Coast entries:

And good luck this week to Polina Edmunds in Grenoble and to Courtney Hicks in Warsaw :yay:.

Bradie Tennell looks ahead to Grand Prix debut at Skate America

Bradie's new official website:

ETA:

ICYMI, the Oct issue of Skating magazine had a lovely anecdote from Bradie about being on the receiving end of Ashley's "Welcoming the Rookie" kindness :ghug: at Champs Camp.
Made me cry :sad4:. Finally getting around to mentioning it.

Respect to Ashley  for reaching out to Bradie, who I'm sure will pay it forward when she can.

How do you know Bradie Tennell isn't going to happen :scratch2:

Her total score at Lombardia Trophy (196.70) is higher then what any US lady has posted so far on the GP (including Mirai's NHK) and her other competition score at Philadelphia (184.98) is right up there in the mix as well.

If she continues to score that well and skates great at SA its foolish to discount her. Every skater has a break through season and so far Bradie is outdoing her past self by quite a bit. She's on the upswing at this moment while all the others are on a up and down trampoline

I mean, it is also just my opinion - its not fact!

Bradie's programs IMHO feel junior-ish and she never has really sparked my interest. She did score well at Lombardia but I think the judges there had the opposite problem as the tech caller at SC. That being said, I think she's a nice skater.

Oh no. Oh no. Sectionals is gonna be so difficult. Some of these poor girls are not going to make it to nationals in the Olympic year when, and even though they’re not in the conversation for the Team, still, it’s a big year.

I recognize a lot of these girls:
Vivian Le
Emily Chan (18 or 19, hasn’t gone to a senior nationals)
Paige Rydberg
Hannah Miller ( I may cry if she doesn’t make it)
Starr Andrews
Kaitlyn Nguyen
Brenner McIsaacs
Ashley Lin
Avery Kurtz

I think most of them will still be around for 2022. Although I think Emily Chan needs to make a move. Starr and Vivian can stay Juniors for one more year, right?

She did win 4CC in 2015. Not as prestigious as the GP series or worlds but the competition was pretty decent so it is something :confused2:

Edmunds did win 4cc in 2015, but with a low score (184) and weak competition. Gold was there but skated well below her norm, scoring but 176.

Mirai scored 194.9 in the 2017 4cc, beating an imploding Osmond by 10 and Wakaba by over 20 to earn a bronze.
