Javier Fernandez

Thanks for the gala info! WOW, that was a very beautiful performance, full of feelings!!! I just love this program and the music....

Despite the win a somewhat subdued feelings from yesterday. Liked the fact that he won. The performance was better than in China, but... I hope they will get over with what ever is going with him before the spring season starts. Love the FS even when it's not perfect.

Today the gala was also quite emotional - as evergreen pointed out later this could have been his last GP event! He started his GP career in France in 2009, so this was a suitable place to posso ly end it. Danny Boy was exquisite 😍😍😍

Danny Boy is my favorite ex of Javi's! I've been in love with this program since I saw it for the first time at CoR last year. That breathtaking spread eagle to 3Loop  and his Ina Bauer is just amazing. His turnout would make every ballet dancer jealous :drama:

Realized that the next time we see Javi compete will be the Europeans in January...and then the Olympics, maybe the Worlds...It's getting so close to the curtain call of Javi's competitive career. As a uber fan of Javi, I just want to cherish every single remaining performance of his!

I just realized, that not only Javi won't have to travel for GPF, but also Brian wouldn't have to. None of his pupils qualified. So they can all use time and calmly preapre in Toronto. Maybe that would be a good thing?

Fernandez is not yet eliminated from GPF contention, or he might become a first alternate, so they can't ignore prep completely.

He's got only 20 points. He won't qualify, there's too many guys at SA who has better than his situation. But, you're right he's going to be alternate and we can't exclude possibility that someone will WD from GPF.

Jason with 2-4 placement is ahead of Javi's chance for GPF, so Jason could be the first alternate depending on the final result of SA. If Javi advances to GPF, so should Jason as some weird things happen such as the several top contenders bombing and placing much lower in Skate America than we assume. I don't want that scenario although I really wish Javi competes in GPF for the last chance before his retirement.

It’s kind of poetic that what was likely Javi’s last Grand Prix competition was a gold medal finish. Just like Misha got his first Grand Prix medal in his last Grand Prix competition.

Anyway, I hope he takes full advantage of the time he has now to make sure he’ll be in top shape for the second and much more important half of the season.

You said it very nicely. :) It's like the famous song saying "Always Look at the Bright Side of Life"

You're right. He needs time to shape him up for the remaining season which includes Euros and Olympics. :)

I came back from Grenoble loving Javi's skating even more than ever before. As if it wasn't evident enough on screen that showing how far Javi has come as a skater and performer in the past few years through a completely rethought Chaplin piece was a brilliant move, actually seeing it live is mind blowing. But even beyond that, it's astonishing to see just how perfectly in harmony Javi is with the music, all the while evoking an iconic character, and in such command of his entire body that I've never seen from him before.

Yes, the free skate wasn't great. But even with the mistakes that happened here, it's clear that Javi loves this program. Even in a simple practice session, he performs it with such dedication that reveals this is far more than excellent choreography. I feel this program IS Javi, the image he would like to leave behind, with its journey of playfulness, romantic grandeur, quiet soulfulness and cathartic finale.

And then there's Danny Boy, which I finally got to see live for the first time. I have said this before: I will never understand how on earth Javi had the courage to take on THIS piece of music as his first profoundly lyrical program, about a dead father's message to a son far away. But since those first slightly uncertain steps back in Boston, MY GOD, this program has developed into an incredibly moving piece of art! The emotional weight of the music carried with such gentleness from the blades of his skates to the tips of his fingers!

Ahh, and isn't it great to visit the ISU figure skating page and bump into Javi's huge photo? If we're talking poetic, how about this? Amongst all the references to Javi as the old man of the field, that photo reveals the first grey hairs. Somehow I find that rather moving, too. Yes, I'm that melancholic about the end Javi's competitive career looming ever closer.

Oh yes, I thought it great already from Boston, but now it´s become even more artistic and his moves look really beautiful and controlled. Now the program is totally ready!

I´d suppose the music was chosen for Boston as there are lots of people of Irish origin (I have understood), excellent choice for him!!! And wonderful for Javi to skate to a really different kind piece of music, branching out, so to speak.

Aw —can't believe I forgot to post here after the competition! Well, I was less than happy with the FS, but so enthralled with the SP that in the end I think it was a deserving win, even if it was because Shoma bombed twice (poor Shoma, and I do like him a lot too). Curse the ice!! But then the gala was magic. It blows me how much has Danny Boy improved since the last time I saw it. It was incredibly touching! Elegant, mature and beautiful.
Aw shucks. There's this one blog that has been doing fantastic fanart but it has three letters starting with WT that golden skate doesn't like, so whenever I try to put the link it censors me (it's just on the link though). If anyone has got any clues on how to avoid this please do tell —the doodles are definitely worth it, pretty funny!!
There have been some beautiful photos of the competition.
And others about him still being a dork. Most of them are of immediately after the short (the hat was a good choice) but of course the podium looked great as well.

After the long program, he said quite a lot of interesting things (x). You probably already saw the interview since it was with golden skate but I thought I'd link it for reference anyway.

He's had plenty of Spanish media coverage for his win as well, which is good. Mostly the usual sport media as well as the ABC newspaper, which seems to keep him covered this whole season.

Now in his Instagram seems like he's back to work!!
He's also put a message against gender violence in his Instagram. The caption reads "if it's like this then it's not love".

It sucks so much that I'm not in Spain when he's doing Nationals! And I really doubt it will be streamed anywhere. Aww... Well. Let's hope next time it's different!
Thank you so much for the reports to those who were there! I'm still super envious!!!.

ISU just posted a most recent interview with Javier

http://isu.org/figure-skating/figur...and-of-course-it-wasn-t-easy?templateParam=15

I feel really sad reading it but whole-heartly wish him best of luck the rest of season. For better or worse, he remains to be my all time favorite skater.

I was just coming to post that as well!!
Same thoughts. It kinda has a sad feeling. Oh my, Javi, rest well and give it your best!! I feel like he may be thinking among the lines of "yes, but what if my best is not enough?" and that's sad. It amazes me how quickly the years pass for a skater. I guess the tone of the interview also takes into account the whole not-getting-into-GPF-thing. I believe Javi still has a lot to give this season, a lot of pure skating for him and for us. He's far from defeated! People are always quick to write someone off, be it Javier or many others. And he's always performed better being a bit of an underdog

I really liked his insight on La Mancha. I feel as if he connects with the character, the coreography, the program. I really want to see it clean!
I wish him all the best —he deserves it!! I like, even love, many skaters, and I don't dislike any, but no one has ever made me feel such enjoyment of the sport as Javier Fernández.

This interview was rather depressing indeed. :( He sounds like he is running on the last drops of fuel in the tank, physically and mentally, and is ready to hang up his skates. How that will affect the rest of his season is yet to be seen. Who knows, it may even propel him to great things, just like Boston when he kept saying to himself before the free that he just had one more skate to get through, and we all know what that led to. But I'm more and more convinced that not making the GPF and having a lighter schedule as a result is a blessing in disguise.

Onwards and upwards, senor, just three more competitions next year! :hap10:

Evergreen, thanks for the interview link!

I think it was a great realistic interview, Javi always has real, personal things to say. It is sad that this is his last season, but he has been competing for such long, long time. Much better to leave the competitions after this season, before severe injuries start to appear. Hopefully there will be many, many shows for him to participate, from which we are at least seeing clips in coming years....

I can understand how he feels about the energy, etc., because he is retiring and the feeling kind of has to be the same at what ever age you are doing it. Besides, there will be for him a new career in coaching later.

A new article about Javi on the IOC website, spreading some lovely seasoned athlete's wisdom and insight. I adore his comment about performance bringing medals and not the other way around. :luv17: Well said, Javi!

Now that's a happier interview!! Thanks a lot for the link, tureis. It was a really interesting read. I definitely like his level-headedness dealing with the pressure, and I hope it doesn't change as Olympics come closer and closer.
I also like his relationship with Orser, who has been absolutely pivotal in his career. I think Javi will make a marvelous coach when the time comes!
