2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

If Bradie nails her nationals short program, I think they should consider her for the team event short program. She is the least risky.

right now the ones i would be bradie, Ashley for olympic team.

mirai still hasn't sold me-yes a triple axel,.
mariah
courtney
karen
other winners, medalist from sectionals. even though juniors coming up to seniors

i could see tessa hong 4th at last years nationals, until long
emma ma,
vivian le,
starr andrews.
caroline zhang -yes her
angela wang.
some others from the u.s. sectionals come into play.
they all competed juniors gp events and do well at nationals who knows.

mirai, karen, and mariah didn't impress me enough to put on olympic team.

they also have to think world team, 4cc team also .
olympic the favorites would still be 3 from last years worlds plus bradie, mirai i think have inside track, along with courtney

possibly polina edmunds.

The showing by Karen and Ashley yesterday we just so unfortunate. I didn't have tons of confidence in Karen going on with the program changes, but that fall just looked hideously painful. I can't imagine she's not rattled going into today. I was really holding out hope that Ashley's performance would live up to that dress (!!!), but it was not to be. She tends to do better in the long, but I just really wanted her to come out swinging.
Yay for Bradie, though! I haven't quite warmed up to her overall package yet, but you can't argue with the fact that she's very solid technically. Hope it continues for her into today.

The showing by Karen and Ashley yesterday we just so unfortunate.

why? all being the same. karen has sensational big lutz and wonderful technique but she can't show stability like tuktamysheva with always popping her jumps

with ashley another case: 9 of her 10 skates always with urs. it depends on technical panel what they want, give her < or show mercy

all being the same. my only hope is mirai. i'm hopping she'll be national champion

I agree the whole Ashley loves the underdog role is just nonsense and played out and if she does love having to come from behind even if she makes the Olympic team she will be lucky to make the top 10 because their is way to much depth now to get away with a doing crappy SP. This isn't 2012.

THIS^^^^^ If Ashley skates her SP in Korea, the way she skated here....She'll be so far back that even a perfect LP won't save her. There were several top ladies that didn't go to Skate America and if they'd been there, I doubt she'd be in the final flight. As it stands, she has the lowest score of the final group and even a perfect program might not get her on the podium. Maybe she'll have nerves of steel but, she should use them for the SP and give herself some breathing room instead of having her back against the wall....Again.

So I didn't see this posted even after searching...

Tallinn Trophy results page

Caroline Zhang moved up from 6th in the SP to 4th overall at Tallinn Trophy CS event with a 170.82, less than a point from a bronze!
- She had a 56.35 in the SP for 6th. Jumps were 3F, 3Lo<+3Lo<, and 2A. Spins were L4/L4/L3 and steps were L2.
- Her FS was 3rd with a 114.47. Jumps were 3F+2T, 3Lze, 3T, 3Lo+3Lo<, 3F+2T+2Lo, 2A, and 2A. Again, spins were L4/L4/L3 and steps were L2.

Angela Wang unfortunately struggled in the FS, moving from 3rd after the SP down to 5th overall, with a total of 160.04.
- SP score was 62.50, which was 3rd. Jumps were 3F-2T, 2A, 3Lo. Spins were all L4, steps were L3.
- FS score was 97.54, which was 11th :( . Jumps were 3F, 3Lz, 1Lo, 3Lo+2A+SEQ, 3F<+REP, 2S, and 2A. Unfortunately she fell on both 3F. Spins were all L4 and steps were L3.

I just can't put my heart into Angela Wang anymore. It seems that every time she builds momentum she has a rough skate and takes herself out of contention. A performance like this leads me to believe that even if she skates well at Nationals, the committee will leave her off the team in favor of a more consistent skater. If Courtney brings it at Nationals, I hope the spot will be hers. I think Ashley will be on the team no matter how she skates but, the rest of the spots are up for grabs. I look forward to seeing Mariah Bell again since I hear she's re-worked her LP which was not going over well with the judges.

Where did you hear that Mariah Bell was re-working her LP?

Much like Mao Asada in Sochi. Doesn't matter how good your FS is if you can't deliver in the SP. But Wagner of all people should know that already!

If Bradie [Tennell] nails her nationals short program, I think they should consider her for the team event short program. She is the least risky.

Not sure if I agree. As shaky as Wagner is, when her jumps are off at least she's got PCS to fall back on. No way any of the other US girls could get a 64 with a skate like that. OTOH, you send someone brand new out there without the cushion (or the "street cred") and put her under pressure she's not used to...even if she has a decent history at smaller events, you are still rolling the dice.

Should Russian fed export some of their ladies to US.

Maybe some of their coaches.....To say that Marina has put North America on the Ice Dancing map would be an understatement. You have to wonder what Eteri could do with a skater like Karen Chen, Bradie Tennell or Starr Andrews.

Where did you hear that Mariah Bell was re-working her LP?

I read it somewhere in the forum after her program didn't score well but, I couldn't say for sure. I said that I thought Mariah should go back to EOE since her new program wasn't well received. Someone said that she was planning to re-work her current program which I think is West Side Story.

If Karen is making all these decisions alone and ignoring advice, we cannot blame Tammy for that. It's a tough call, but forcing Karen into any decision regarding her artistic expression and pressuring her more is a no go. Look what it did to Gracie Gold (who faced different circumstances, but the same theory of steamrolling a skater's vision for a more packaged one doesn't necessarily work when the skater is strong-willed.)

Gracie obviously had issues with Frank toward the end, but we know nothing regarding whether or not she was pressured in any particular artistic direction. Even if she was, it was really the least of her issues. IMO, I never got the impression that Gracie had any artistic inclinations or visions one way or another, and was happy to be given whatever (though oftentimes what she was given didn't entirely fit her strengths/general style, which isn't her fault).

On the other hand, Karen has a lot of ideas about who she is as a skater. Unfortunately, she's not an expert, and could certainly benefit from more guidance (if she's making all these decisions independently).

Ashley has struck the right balance between being herself / following what she wants and being guided by Raf and her choreographers (though unfortunately her technical ability is limited).

Anyway, geez, Karen has jumping ability in spades, unlike Ashley. There's no reason she shouldn't have a rotated 3-3 - it just hasn't been fixed.

Karen has the under-rotated 3-3 for years since her junior days, I just can't believe her coach can't fix that. Wish Karen will go the Vincent route, go with two different coaches.

I think that Mariah's NHK lp layout was more backloaded than it was at Rostelecom, so I could see them re-working that (though..."read it somewhere" with no backup is kind of the response that I figured I would get to my question...).

Sorry.....If I wasn't busy, I'd go back and find it but I don't think it's that important................Trust me, I was not the only person who preferred her East Of Eden LP to this one. I almost didn't comment because I couldn't remember where the conversation took place. Anyway, what do you think her chances are of making the team again.

Sheesh... US ladies these days...
People I'm excited for:
Bradie: I've always been a Bradie fan and it's great to see her getting the recognition that she deserves. Her technique is incredible, she's so consistent, and she's working on her artistry. I'm honestly most hyped about her right now.
Mirai: She's getting back up there! A reliable-ish triple axel, that is, no falls or downgrades, and less URs than previous years is great! And she got a medal at an ISU championship last year! How many other US ladies could say that? That's right, none.
Hanna: She is a dynamo. I love her jumps, her attack, and her personality that she MAINTAINS throughout her program. The future of US figure skating? I don't want USFSA to do what they did with Gracie to her though. Let's say that I'm a big fan of her :)
Emmy Ma: Once she gets that triple toe and a little more stability in those triples she could potentially be a force to be reckoned with.

Side note:
Do you have to have been a skater in order to be a coach??

My predictions for the O team are more affirmed now for Bradie + Mirai + other. Ashley's skating has been on a slow decline since her world medal, Karen has less consistency than Mirai. I'm hoping Mariah's programs are reworked, and Angela to come bouncing back.

Side note:
Do you have to have been a skater in order to be a coach??
Not really, but most coaches will have taken at least some skating lessons as a child. Lower-level coaches in particular spend a lot of time demonstrating moves to young skaters. Many skaters also transition to coaching. But I don't think success level or progression through levels necessarily indicate success as a coach, it's just good to have a good foundation of basic skating skills and some level of experience in competing.

Many of the most successful coaches were also competitive skaters who weren't too successful while competing themselves, including Eteri Tutberidze, Frank Carroll, Tatiana Tarasova, Marina Zueva, etc.
