2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

My predictions for the O team are more affirmed now for Bradie + Mirai + other. Ashley's skating has been on a slow decline since her world medal, Karen has less consistency than Mirai. I'm hoping Mariah's programs are reworked, and Angela to come bouncing back.

is Amber Glenn completely out of the picture - I saw her as a junior and she seemed to have a lot of promise but now I get the feeling she has become a bit of a head case?

One thing i notice about Bradie's jumps is she has fast rotation compared to most of the top US Ladies.

Oh man. 2 more surprises:

1) Wagner WD! Not good.

2) Tennell first US lady to crack 200 this season...

Those two items combined means...literally, NO ONE is a lock for the US Team. This one has just been blown wide open. Send the top 3 in January.

Exactly....Whoever brings it at Nationals should go, period!

I hope Bradie skates well at Nationals. She had two good outings this season, and I'd like to see her earn a spot.

I really hope Ashley takes time to heal and doesn’t push herself. Since she was in so much pain today I’m proud she made the decision to withdraw rather than to risk further injury...wishing her all the best and to come back with a fire under her butt in January. What even is this season...

i still think if ashley's healthy-she will go,
bradie made a good case for herself if she skate well at nationals. 1st ladie to score 200 in senior debut and medal

yes it open

all others can.

My fear for Ashley is that her score ceiling seems like it's getting lower, as it has become very rare for her to get full credit for her 3-3 combos/sequences in recent years. She completed only one international competition this season, whereas our other women picked up a least one Senior B to go with their GP assignments. It's getting to the point where she has to rely on mistakes from others to do well; as soon as Bradie posted 205, I think we all knew Ashley couldn't match that.

I've said this on this board before - I HATE HATE HATE the "body of work" criteria. I've always thought that U.S. Nationals should be treated like an Olympic Trials like swimming and track & field. There's a reason that the U.S. continues to dominate in those two sports. I know figure skating is a judged sport, but with a few notable exceptions (Nancy Kerrigan in 1994), if you aren't ready to go in early January, you probably aren't going to able to cut it ~six weeks later. Just sayin'.

The only thing is that, if you send a bad team, you are potentially throwing away the (almost) guaranteed team medal. It probably won't make a difference this year, as none of our women are a sure bet to skate a good program, but you couldn't leave someone like Nathan home if he skated a bad program at Nationals when he would help secure the team medal and potentially win an individual one. The USFSA's goal is to send the best team, not to pick a team in the most fair manner possible.

Can someone remind me who is going to be skated at Golden Spin?

If she's not slated to go already, USFS should send Bradie. She could use the international exposure.

The "body of work" rule wouldn't exist if the skaters weren't in such a rut and the field as a whole wasn't so lackluster :disagree:

Once upon a time the top US skaters skated at nationals like they were head a shoulders above the rest. There was never a fear that the US would be sending less then its best because the country's top skaters always got the job done. 2014 changed that :confused2:

the rule was clearly made with the ladies in mind but of course the other disciplines can now benefit as well. They can thank the ladies for that. It may be Ashley Wagner's lasting legacy :slink:

That's a little unfair...the body of work rule has ALWAYS existed. Only now it has been spelled out much more explicitly.

Once upon a time when the US skaters were skating head and shoulders above the rest at Nationals, the sport was far less risky - everyone was doing easier elements and suffering fewer injuries. Times have changed.

The first body of work substitution I remember was not Ashley but Todd Eldredge. Can't blame Ashley for that.

Hate this idea, cause should the Shibs or Nathan get the flu the day of the long program they would be out even if they were leading?

except Todd pulled out due to injury and got placed on the Olympic team via petition. Same with Nancy '94 and Michelle '06. None of them skated at nationals and flopped like Ashley did. She just skated bad
