2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I'm sorry she's hurt, but the spectacle of WDing halfway through a program was ridiculous imo. Either WD before the long, or skate through. The drama is getting old.

I think ideally she should have WD before the long program in this case, but I can't really take issue with her WD in the middle of a program, either. Remember Lipnitskaya's horrible FS when she hurt herself in the middle of her program, then insisted on finishing it injured (falling a few more times), and retired shortly thereafter? I think the consensus there was that her coach should have stopped her and not let her continue. So I can't then blame Ashley for thinking she could do it, and then stopping when she realized it was a bad idea.

I completely don't blame ashley for WDing for her health (especially remembering Julia)... but I also don't understand why she skated in the first place. Idk, I just think it's a really bad look, especially after Bradie skated so well. It just always something.

Everyone needs to take into account that Ashley's leg was feeling ok for her to skate on and she was doing well with it until pre LP warm up.

So saying she's constantly making excuses or should have pulled out all together before the event is not making anyone's comments better than the trash that Tara and Johnny spewed about her on air today that everyone's complaining about.

Ashley did what she had to do in a split second decision to protect her health and her future in this sport in her run for the Olympics.
Cut the woman some slack.

oh then $110 for a section? Same as Brian Orser as he mentioned sometimes ago when he coached Yuna.

 A section?!?!

I think at that point it just hurt too much she had to stop. :sad4:

I always took Ashley's "talking a good game" as the run-of-the-mill positive reinforcement stuff that most athletes say. You hear it from boxers, wrestlers and other participants in individual sports. In fact the only time I remember not hearing this type of talk is with Gracie after Worlds, which was jarring, and now we know she was dealing with a lot of issues at the time.

It's fine to be frustrated with her performance and/or perceived lack of progress, but I think some of you are putting way too much stock in these sound bites.

Plus don't forget that the USFSA trains their top skaters in "media speak", espec when it comes to spinning disastrous performances: :yay:

"This was a great learning experience"
"Now I know what I need to work on for Nationals/the next GP/Worlds/the Olympics"
"I can't wait to get back to training"
"I'm really proud that I was able to compete under pressure even though my (boots/blades/injury) was a challenge for me."
"This proves that I'm a fighter"
"Even though today wasn't my day it's been such privilege to come here and compete with some of the world's top skaters"

Johnny's comment that she should have finished was so dumb. Nobody other than the athlete can know the pain and what to do, nobody. You may think it, but to say it on national TV is just so incredibly arrogant.

WHy are people acting like this is the first time Ashley has had to compete after a skater who killed it? It's her third fricken Olympic cycle. She knows how to deal with pressure...this wasn't a Tonya crying over her laces situation. We knew she was recovering from an injury coming into this and imo it's so Ashley to just want to push through it and get it done out on the ice. It's not hard to believe that at all. I'm actually surprised( but glad) that she didn't just grit her teeth and finish out the skate. I think this would have happened no matter who she skated after. I mean she left practice an hour early right? That right there is a clue that something wasn't right. I can only image the adrenaline rush of trying to decide in that moment if you want to withdraw or not...poor Ashley.

When Ashley left her practice session early this morning, I knew there was a problem. I'm very concerned about this injury now. A round of antibiotics should've taken care of a topical infection. I hope this gets better soon.

Sometimes, once you start to compete the adrenaline will mask the pain. But if it's extremely painful the adrenaline is not enough. Maybe she was hoping it would kick in after a minute or 2. Clearly it did not. You can't blame her for trying. And remember she skated 2016 worlds with a torn muscle.

I agree with everything you said here.

It depends how one is looking; with a dirty eye everything seems to be dirty.

Before the competition started, she was advised to skip it. Today during her run through, she did no jumps.

Is that so? :scratch2: By whom?

_____________

I said this elsewhere, but I am not of the party who thinks Wagner took "the easy way out" by WDing during her FS here. Actually, such a position is somewhat confusing to me, although I do understand the suspicion. In fact, initially I shared it at first, until I saw her post-FS NBC interview. I do question whether she should have competed here in the first place if it truly was that bad, but judging by how upset she was in the post-skate interview, I really think she was hurting, but wanted to push herself through it all. Obviously it got to the point where she just couldn't take it any more, and thus you have the WD mid-program.

Now, if this was Olys, I bet she would have continued on (perhaps, to potentially disastrous results if it truly was hampering her)...but at an event like SA, with Nats just one month away, at some point you have to make a judgment call whether it was worth it or not. I believe that's what she did here. Hopefully for her sake she can be back within a month. The early start to US Nationals this year surely works against her here, no?

If it's a really bad injury, the one-month gap between now and Nationals week has me a bit nervous. Not only does she have to heal, but she has to get back into training and ramp up to be ready. And since it's the Effective Trials, the pressure will be VERY high. Even if she recovers, she could find herself in a Sasha Cohen 2010 situation where time simply catches up to her. (Yes, I know Cohen was out for 4 years, so it wouldn't be quite the same, but still, lost time is lost time.)

Bradie is the first US female skater in a long time that made me saw wow. I look forward to seeing more of her. The hunt for the Olympic team for the ladies looks to be very interesting.

Karen's Requiem of a Dream SP and OGP SP also made me say wow. I just wish she could get her jump issue and choreo sorted out.

I'm happy there is a US woman who can skate two clean programs, but I am really not a fan of Bradie's posture and overall skating quality. She needs to work on having more elegance on her jump landings. To me it also seemed like she forced her jumps with her arms a little too much, which might work OK when you're really lightweight but might be a problem later on... kind of like Polina E. Her speed is incredible though
