2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I was at Skate America and towards the end of the ladies practice on Friday Ashley started signing autographs for fans rinkside. Is that normal? I'm wondering if maybe she wanted a break from the pain in her foot.

It used to be so pleasant here. I can't believe there's so much bickering about Ashley withdrawing.

Yes. It seems like it's getting worse and worse. Not so nice to come in here much anymore. Everything gets blown out of proportion. Is it because it's an Olympic year or something else.

GOE seems as controversial these days as PCS scores - it might be better for her to try and up the technical ante if she can.

All of Mirai's problems are the result of execution, not attempted difficulty. It's a similar story for most of the top Americans, including Karen and Ashley. They all have the base value to compete for medals now; they just don't rotate their jumps.

Setting the Ashley discussion aside for a moment, what do you guys think of Bradie Tennell's performance at Skate America? Is Bradie destined to be this year's Mariah Bell, to suddenly jump into the mix and onto the world team? Given that no U.S. lady has hit a home run so far this year, could Bradie win the National Championship?

That's not unusual.

Yes a welcome change of topic . . .

If you compare how Bradie skated at SA with how all of the other US women have skated this season she is definitely the winner at this point. Mirai is second and everyone else is a toss up. If I heard correctly, Bradie also skated well at her previous comps this season so SA was not a fluke. She is the only US woman to land all of her jumps clean at a competition, no URs no 2 foot landings. If she adds another 3-3 combo she could certainly be in the mix at the Olympics. A medal? Probably not but at this point she is the only one who looks like she has even a slim chance for a medal.

Bradie actually reminds me a little bit of Polina Edmunds. When she first came on the scene she couldn't miss. Her jumps were high and beautiful and she had that young colt thing going. I thought her SA performance was remarkable and fresh and new. Of course the expectations for her were pretty low. Let's see how she performs under pressure and higher expectations. I'm certainly not an expert but she seemed to have really good basics.

Though unlike Polina, the good thing about Bradie is that, at 19 she is past puberty and not in danger of a growth spurt throwing off her jumps.

Bradie's been low-key successful, which is why people are surprised by her. She has finished in the top 6 at Nationals in 2016, which earned her a Jr. Worlds spots over ladies who did better on the JGP. She wasn't as good in 2017, but still was in the top 10.

I thought she was really inconsistent like all the ladies cause she had a really poor Jr. Worlds performance after that. But I guess this is the first year she's able to train full-blast and injury free in some two years.

I'd been following closely enough to know of her successes so far this year. She's more consistent than Mariah, although I do really like Mariah. And maybe Bradie can get more feedback from higher ups to improve her scores, but she is a pretty solid skater when uninjured. She didn't win her junior national title as a fluke, nor did she win her metal this weekend as a fluke. Not pinning the hopes of a nation on her, but I think she's the one to watch at Nationals. Of course we could be blown away by someone we aren't expecting, no clue who that would be.

She doesn't have to add another triple triple as she already has 7 triples (maximum) in the program. All you need to do for 7 triples and 2 double axels is to have 2 combinations with triples on the end, meaning they can go on another triple or on the end of a double axel and the actual base value of the entire program would not change. (Ignoring second half bonuses)

While all the chatter was about Ashley's WD, to me Bradie's emergence was the story of Skate America for the US Ladies. Her performance here was a revelation, probably because I've been too focused on the more well known athletes. Seeing an American woman skate back-to-back solid skates was an early Christmas present.

There's been a lot of groaning about consistency across the board, so it's very tempting to treat Bradie like she's a water fountain springing up in the middle of a desert. And a blonde American skating to a Disney soundtrack while dressed in Cinderella blue could play well to an Olympic audience. But I am hesitant to pin all of our nation's hopes on her this early because she wasn't the center of focus.

I do think she looks like she's primed to add new life to US Ladies and I look forward to rooting for her at nationals!
