Medvedeva WDs from GPF

there are rumors that she might skip the whole season if doesn't heal fast enough

Rumors that she might skip the Olympics? I'd be very, very surprised by that... and her injury didn't sound that bad too. A GPF WD is possible ofc (and I still think if there is the slightest doubt of participating worsening her condition, then she should), maybe even Nationals & Euros - but skipping the Olympics in nearly 3 months from now? Sounds like overdramatizing to me. At least from the info we have of it right now.

Those are not rumors, it's a doctor's opinion about what, in theory, can happen. He says (not exactly in those words) that if such an injury is not completely healed after 3 to 4 weeks of rest, then it can take much longer to heal, meaning a skipped season for Medvedeva. But neither he, nor the other doctor who expressed his opinion about this type of injury, are among the doctors helping Medvedeva with her injury, from what I understand. Just experts from the side. Also, if Medvedeva competes at GPF, she won't have had even 3 full weeks of rest. But the first doctor spoke about how the treatment process is very different for athletes - more "forced" and squeezed into much shorter periods of healing time.

I lurve the idea of RSF having Med go there only to withdraw right before the SP just so that the 1st alternate won't be able to compete! So devious, yet so strategic! LOL. If anything, it will enhance Wakaba's reputation if she medals. But this isn't a Med v. Zag thing. If Zag wins w/o Med it will only increase Zag's reputation going into Olys but still keep Med's reputation intact. If Med shows up still not fully healed and loses to Zag would be worse for Med at Olys. And who's to say Med doesn't fully heal by Olys, now the RSF has GPF champion Zag going in as top dog with .top favorite status in case Med can't pull it off at Olys. It's not about Satoko being competition for Sotskova (who I think will be third woman at Olys). It's diminishing Satoko's reputation/momentum just in case. Kind of brilliant if you ask me. They would do the same thing if Gaby was 1st alternate to GPF too. Let's see how this plays out....

It's indeed devious and strategic but I don't see that worth doing since this year's final is in Japan. Traveling and jetlag would be too much for an already injured skater, she needs resting eating properly etc. I think she will go only if there is a chance that she might skate. Maybe she can do the SP and then withdraw? Alina's SP is never perfect so if Evgenia wins the SP she might withdraw while in the lead , if Alina wins overall that would be good for both girls given the situation.

If she cannot skate she will not leave Russia, this is what I think. Sakomoto isn't the real threat at the moment anyways.

Nooooooo...
I can't deal with skating if this is the case.
Zhenya really should skip the GPF so this doesn't happen. I really hope that she doesn't push herself and then regret it later if she's so injured that she can't do the Olympics. Perspective is everything and I think she'll realized that one (Olympics) is much more important than the other (GPF)
That said, if indeed the Russian team is banned I think she'll go to GPF instead. But I doubt that will happen and sincerely hope that it doesnn't.

See my response to 'russianfan' about the article containig said "rumor" two posts above yours.

According to twitter, the decision whether Zhenya will participate or not in GPF has been made and the Fed will announce it soon.

sounds like she will withdraw, since the fed has to 'announce' it.. they wouldn't have to announce her already secured place in the GPF :scratch2:

Metatarsal one is tricky indeed and it depends what level it is.

If we assume that she has a fatigue fracture, then this is quite nasty. These "fractures" do happen if you just ignore the first warnings of your body (soft pain) and keep competing. At one point, the bone structure will start to decay and the body can´t cope with it anymore and develop a fracture, which can take months to heal.

This is not something that just happens overnight, it is something that happens over many months of constant "abuse" of your feet, so she might have ignored the problem for too long already. Constant strain and pressure, are often the reason for these problems.
The issue is, that your body has to heal itself and that can take up to six months, before you are actually able to fully perform again.

Now given, I do not know enough about her condition, but there is a possible scenario where she indeed might need to pause for many months. That is, however, the worst case scenario and I hope that this is not what the doctors have diagnosed.

So we will all know for sure today. I have been so worried for her thinking she may push herself to compete at the GPF.

I think this is so unlucky and sad. She has a good chance at OGM or a medal; I hope she can heal but GPF and Russian Nats seems like she should not skate. She should fully rest ie for another two weeks or whateve the doc says and then train for Euros.

Sadly, yeah. No statement from the Fed yet, though.

I think it's the better decision, strategically. Because the chance that Alina wins over her with an injury is very high. Others I can't see overtaking her, but if she falls apart that is also possible. And that would lead to a downward spiral. If she withdraws she remains that unbeaten, strong skater until she competes again, whether that's at Nationals, Europeans or even the Olympics. She has so much more to lose here, than to gain from another GPF appearance. Let's see.

Prize for winning GPF equals almost 4 year Russian average salary.
Just to put things in perspective.

Is it worth risking an Olympic Gold medal though? She's won this thing 2 times, as Worlds, Europeans, GP medals.....

Not something anyone ever thinks about with these situations, I guess. I know it's not what I thought about (and while not as extreme, it'd be in the years too if I counted my salary to equal a GPF win).
The argument here though would be that if healthy, she still has a better chance to get medals (and therefor money) at the bigger competitions later, then if she competes, makes her health worse and then has less chances at the later competitions.

It's a tough decision. I just hope whatever she choses urns out to be the right one. (And that the RusFed hurries up already! Why on earth are we left haning like this? :gaah: )

Yes it is a big paycheck for the skaters but I don't think in Med's case she
should risk further injury for the money. I don't know any specifics about her endorsements
but I am pretty sure she does have them, and that they pay well.

She should rest honestly. Euros are in Moscow. Resting after putting your body trough travel fatigue, jetlag, competition stress, intense training etc, gives you more power and you go back on the ice. I remember when I was down with a severe case of flu and couldn't skate for more than 2 weeks. I came back training like a fireball.
I'm thinking Yuzuru also might benefit from that.

The only thing is that yes, you have to train your jumps everyday for consistency. But this is Evgenia we're talking about, she has the mental toughness and the ability to do so.
I really want to see her at her best. Doesn't matter if she's your fave or not, she has earn everything since months and it would be a disappointement (for HER) if she goes to the Olympics not feeling 100%.
Also, for a European : Euros >>>>>> GPF.

I thought they said the injury occurred over the summer. Then she competed knowing it was fractured.

i don't think she has any problems with money being the best female skater in the world for two years straight
