Medvedeva WDs from GPF

If you read this thread, you got an overwhelming impression of one and only 'logical' way to go for Medvedeva: to withdraw from GPF - everything else is too risky, stupid even.
The reasons: proverbial 'own good', health, career, better Oly preparations, etc..

Not a single person considered financial aspect of the matter like it's not even worth mentioning and it's mindboggling to me. :whack:

Not a single person? It seems like the last five whole pages of this thread have been about the financial aspect! :confused:

The financial aspect is important, but you can't make a judgment without considering the risk/return factor, for the same reason working the stock market takes careful consideration. It's a matter of "potentially make money now" or "potentially make money later". If she competes now, she might win and get the $25k, but aggravate her injury and have to sit out an entire season. Or worse, what if she injures herself and doesn't win? That's a year's worth of winnings she'd be missing out on, and sponsorships in jeopardy.

I can see how it might make sense to skate now, give it her all, and take her winnings when you consider that skating is a volatile sport where injuries are possible at any time (and who knows whether she'll suffer an injury that ends her career during a random practice over the summer?). But if you consider your body as an investment, a money-generating asset that it's in your best interest to keep working for as long as possible, it makes more sense to me to play it safe and take the hit to her paycheck now, rather than risk losing it all later.
 
GS has a Skater/Coach privacy clause in its Guidelines. I believe that folks should read it as this thread has gone way off topic.

From what I know about Zhenya, it seems like she would be most reluctant to withdraw because she loves to compete, loves Japan, doesn't want to let the fans down, and doesn't want to let her team down. Money may be one factor, but I don't think that is what drives her. She has won virtually everything there is to win since turning senior - how are the rest of the skaters getting by if things are so dire? Of course every skater can use the prize money, but is it worth injuring yourself further and ending up with a pile of medical bills & missed future competitions?

I apologize if I missed the posts, but does anyone know if Medvedeva has endorsements in Russia? I know skaters remain very popular in Russia and may have more lucrative endorsement deals. In some cases, sponsors put pressure on athletes to compete in order to maximize their investment. So, there may be financial implications beyond the prize money if a sponsor has bonus or performance clauses. But, the Olympic gold is the most lucrative financial opportunity any skater can get. Risking the Olympic gold (she’s not a lock by any means but as close as I’ve seen in recent Olympics) is not worth it!

The ladies' short is less than a week away now, which means that Evgenia and Alina should probably leave for Japan sometime in the next couple of days - I think we will know soon.
 
People need to realize that it's very common for skaters( even other athletes) who are injured to wait at the last minute if there is a chance to compete especially if the competition is very important for them. I have done this twice.

So I'm expecting Medvedeva to fly to Japan and wait till the last minute. I also don't think Eteri's team or the RusFed is that stupid to let her skate when the doctor says no. If she skates, its going to be a collective decision and not hers alone.

Her injury is a stress fracture. skating is doable but with pain but she said she is also used to skating with injuries and pain before. My guess is that she will skate but will skip the Russian Nationals(not important event since she is lock for euros and OG) and use that time to heal.

Do i think i'ts the best decision? maybe No. But is it a reasonable decision? Yes.

Well, from what we know of Medvedeva, she herself will want to compete if she can stand. Which makes all sense for a late WD.

For Rus Fed, it makes all sense to NOT WD Medvedeva beforetime, to ensure she is not replaced, because even if she WDs during SP, the other russian girls will have less competition, and there are 2 of them.

This just doesn't make sense at all. Why would Medvedeva waste her time, energy and reputation to play this stupid "game" when she is not going to benefit at all?

Realistically Zagitova is the one skater who can beat her especially if she skate clean.

A win for Zagitova is a BAD NEWS for Medvedeva while a win for Kostner or the japanese girls doesn't really affect her that much.

You need to realize that a win for Zagitova will only boost her PCS. The one area that holding her back now.

it doesn't take a genius to know that Medvedea is vulnerable now and skaters like Zagitova is creeping up so it makes sense why Medvedeva wants to skate so BAD to maintain her distance from them and assert her dominance.

So if Medvedeva want to play games, it will be much beneficial if she let the alternate to replace her so there is one more person who will try to beat Zagitova (even Kostner). Don't you guys agree??
 
Sad for Zhenya, but it's the right decision and I'm proud of her for realizing that and putting her health first. She has nothing to prove to ANYONE. Please rest, Zhenya, and take care of yourself. You can overcome this!

Even if Evgenia wanted "to play games" (which I doubt, she knows she is unbeatable when clean for everyone including Zagitova, so she only has to worry about her own health and preparation), don't forget Alina, the target of these "games", is not only from the same country, but from the same coach as well.
 
Smart move on her part. Why skate and risk a real broken foot and the end of her Olympic dreams for another GPF gold medal which she already has two?
 
it's sad but she made the right decision even if it means losing to Zagitova :( i hope she will be olympic champion .
So we will have a Satoko VS Wakaba battle
