2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

FWIW:

Before 2017 Worlds (on her media call, IIRC), Karen said her new boots were from Avanta.

Mentioned also in a pre-Worlds article by Lynn Rutherford for IN:

Jacksons would be a change since then.

On TSL interview with Karen last year, Karen mentioned she does need custom boots because her feet is more flat (?) than others. The boot company before 2016 is another custom boot company but they ran out of business in 2016/17, which is why she has to try so many pairs to figure out. Avana is what I remembered from that interview too.

Is there an article where she said she is using Jackson? I’m a bit shock she would change boot company on an Olympic year:/

Karen is a big question mark to me. I mean, at her debut senior nationals she was wonderful and it didn’t look like the pressure got to her at all (and there was definitely pressure, there was a lot of hype about Karen being the answer to the young Russians). Then she wins senior nationals even with the questionable triple-triples (but still does a great job). And then at her debut Worlds she is again superb! How’s all this happen and yet she’s so inconsistent?

Karen did well at Golden Spin in 2015, but came in 8th at nationals in 2016.
She did very poorly (below Gracie) at Golden Spin in 2016, but came in 1st at nationals in 2017.
So maybe however she does at GS, we should plan for the opposite to happen at nationals :) Kidding.

Mirai also had some boot issues in the 2015-2016 season (her boot splitting at nationals/worlds) and last season (she spoke a little bit about it in the post sp nationals press conference I believe/how it prompted her to change boot brands). I think that most of the athletes have various injuries/boot issues going on that the public doesn't have the full scoop on all of the time.

She was inconsistent during that period, too. In between her fine performances at Nationals and Worlds, she bombed at 4CC.

Thanks for the info.....but.....if the same skater keeps having the same issues don't you start wondering about the skater and less about the boot? I mean over a bunch of years? There are orthotics for flat feet and any number of other "fittings" but someone upthread said something about mechanics... Things that make you go hmmmmm.......

BREAKING NEWS: Bradie and Karen have BOTH pulled out of Golden Spin and will be replaced by Emmy Ma and Hannah Miller

Karen had the boot issue where she went through 10+ pairs of boots in a year.

Polina had the bone bruise. I don't remember anyone saying it was related to her boots.

Mira had the cracked boot at Nationals. I once heard an USFS official say that the worst boots you will ever see are at Nationals. The general belief is not to get boots at the beginning of the summer since feet grow over the summer - wait until the fall. But come fall, you want to wait until Regionals is over. But if make Sectionals, then there is another delay. And if you go to Nationals, there is another delay.

I remember hearing this comment about custom boots. The speaker said she never had any foot problems until she got custom boots. Interpret that comment how you want.

Yay Emmy Ma!!! She is the one U.S. lady I adore. What a wonderful opportunity for her. :) Glad to see Hannah Miller get an assignment too...guess she was added to ISP after sectionals or something.

You'll have to ask Ic3Rabbit whether and how she has reliable knowledge regarding a change to Jackson by Karen.

FWIW: AFAIK, Avanta is the brand that Karen most recently has mentioned in public.
That said, I cannot rule out the possibility that she has made a change to something else.

She also mentions that she uses Avanta in her book.

Karen has competed a lot this season so far (Glacier Falls, the SP portion of the Philadelphia Summer international, US Classic, Japan Open, and two grand prixs), so given her change in programs, I think that the only reason to compete at Golden Spin would have been for ranking points. Doing well could have helped from a momentum standpoint, but I think that if she does well at nationals, her season up to this point won't hurt her given the overall state of field.

:(

Good for Emmy and Hannah. Emmy makes her Senior International debut and Hannah gets a last month last minute placement as well. I thought Tessa would get as spot, but Frank probably doesn’t like the proximity to Nationals and some underrotations and downgrades could spoil her momentum.

But I’m disappointed. I really wanted to see Karen and Bradie again. I was hoping Karen got a chance to break in her program again and Bradie could prove her consistency was holding. Oh well...

It gives them more time to practice for nationals. Train hard ladies! Nationals is coming!

Wow, that's ... unfortunate. I was looking forward to seeing Karen again. Any reason as to why?

And Tammy mentioned in one of the articles (ice network?) that they are planning to go GS to get more comfortable with the re-programs and for points. I wonder what really happen last 4 days aside from Karen’s book being out:/

My guess is they decided not to sacrifice the training time.

Me too...I love her spins!!! I’m glad USFS is now giving more opportunities for juniors. Emmy did great in Riga so I hope to see her getting opportunities to build the confidence and her skills :) I wonder if they will send her to JW this year (crossing my fingers!)
