2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Guys... Jason a Brown is going to the GPF. Now three men have made it to a tier 1. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is our Olympic team... although I was really hoping for Max (and also Vincent).

Well technically Jason already did with going to Worlds last year.

I am happy that he got this opportunity, but part of me had thought it may have been great for him to save the long trip to Japan and train those programs to peak at Nationals.

Yes yes - sorry I meant another tier 1!

Adam vs Jason at GPF.

Whoever is favored by the judges, scores 5 points or more, or medals here will have the momentum going into nationals and get the second spot on the team.

Adam has some disadvantage as he does not have much time, less than 2 weeks, to rest, recover and prepare, no less with a shoulder injury, which may be inflamed a few days after. Would a withdrawal be completely ruled out?

I doubt Adam will withdraw. He's posted training videos on IG and seems to be hard at work.

I concur. I get the sense that Adam has become mentally strong, a competitor. I did not view him this way before this season... hence my leaving him off my pre-season Olympic picks.

I think he wants to go, and he wants to do really well there. He doesn't seem emotionally fragile. I'm becoming (slowly) a fan. But that 4Z has got to get better.

Really hoping Jason and Adam will perform well at GPF, pull off a 3-4 finish, and solidify their spots on the Olympic team. Then Vincent can just work exclusively on composition, posture, and musicality for the next year and Max can go back to recreational hockey and all will be well

Regarding Adam, he gave a speech at the Friends of Figure Skating breakfast at Skate America about how his mindset has definitely changed over the past few years. He used to be fearful, but since he came out publicly and takes ownership of who he is, he's much more confident and less fearful. Which is why you see quite a different skater from a few years ago, not to mention the hard work he puts in to his training.

Thanks for sharing this. It provides some perspective.

My favorite kind of skater is one who completes his planned program on his feet.

Other than that, I prefer the men to be a bit more rock-em-sock-em than Adam skates. But that's OK - different strokes and all.

(It's why I like Shoma more than Yuzu, and Max more than Jason...)

Still, I have to say Adam has earned my respect this season, and he didn't really have it before.

Adam's tweet (which is a retweet of Jason's):
Wishing Boyang a speedy recovery and also; See you in a few days, @jasonbskates 💪🏻😁

Jason's tweet for those who haven't seen it:
Honored to have the opportunity to compete alongside @Adaripp & @nathanwchen at the GPF! Always proud to represent @TeamUSA! Please get well soon Boyang!! Thinking about you and wishing you a speedy recovery! 😢🙏 日本へ。。。また来週!GPFに行きます!😱❤️🇯🇵✨

I dig the friendly competition banter. (Also this would squash any idea that Adam is w/ding.)

BTW, someone from USFS happened to tell me about a touching anecdote from Adam's speech at the FOFS breakfast (which I did not attend).

My understanding is that Adam mentioned something about a time when he was having difficulty making payments on his car -- to the point that he was at risk of losing the car.
Raf  came to the rescue :ghug:.

I was pleased to hear this anecdote, b/c I have never agreed with those who believe that Raf cares only about a different skater.

Honestly, the USFSA should announce Nathan to the team before Nationals to avoid a situation like 2014 with the women. However, it's hard to see Nathan coming in 4th or lower in the US men's field, so it probably doesn't matter.

Hmmmm ...

I think it is fair to say that in Dec 2013, it was hard to foresee that Ashley would place 4th at 2014 Nats.

Although I doubt that USFS would go so far as to pre-announce that Nathan is on the Olympic team, I think your point is well taken.

Not to sound weird, I mean, I know every competition matters and is experience. But if they are going to choose from only the result from nationals then what is the point of the GP and the GPF events?

Not sure that I understand the question (so I apologize if I am stating the obvious), but GPs/GPF are opportunities for U.S. skaters to compete against an international field; to be judged by international judges and international tech panels; to earn ISU World Standing points; to earn prize money -- whether or not GP/GPF results make a difference when USFS selects Olympic and World teams.

(And others probably can add to the list of GP/GPF benefits.)

ETA:

Good luck next week to:

Alex Johnson :luv17: at Golden Spin :yay:.

Camden, Andrew, Alex K at JGPF :yay:.

Jason, Nathan, Adam at GPF :yay:.

And congratulations to Michael Weiss for his election to the USFS HOF .

and Max can go back to recreational hockey and all will be well

*grinds teeth* Do not respond to troll bait, do not respond to troll bait, do not respond to troll bait...

I hope Jason kicks all of the butt at GPF, even if it does make Max even more screwed at US Nats than he currently is.

Thanks for sharing that anecdote. It's important; and it gives a different perspective. In the past few months, Adam and Ashley have made separate statements praising Rafael for all that he does for them as a coach. I don't think they'd go out of their way to say those things publicly if they didn't mean them, or if they felt he was indifferent to them. And FTR, I've also never agreed with those who say Raf only cares about another skater.

Yep, that's right. Of course, whether they were ones fully rotated by a panel is another question in itself. I do think Adam has made some creditable attempts, like the one he did at NHK, which he landed on one foot.

And it was a simply gorgeous jump, smooth, with speed going into it and tight fast rotations in the air. It took the B.Esp. guys (and me!) a few seconds to catch breath!

In the discussion about whether Adam is doing the 4Lutz "just" to get more points ... as if that were some sort of bad thing;)... it may be relevant to recall that last year, he switched to training the 4T and landed at least one successfully in competition with full credit. It was only because training the 4T was ruled out when he got back on the ice after recovering from a broken foot, that he went back to training 4Lz again. Going forward, who knows, but my guess he'll stay on the path he's begun in this season, unless his foot or shoulder somehow prevent it.

Best of luck to Nathan, Adam and Jason at the GPF. :ghug:

It Nathan Chen injured? Just by Raf Quotes, it seems like he might be injured. If he is, I hope he withdraws since the event is not that important for NAthan.

"There (are) a lot of issues, not only blades, that I don't want to talk about," he said. "I hope we will get him at the right time, at the right point, in good shape. He did good programs already (this season) with (quad) loops and (triple) axels.

Pressed for details, Arutunian added, "Technique, and confidence, and blades and injuries, so many things around. We cannot talk about everything because it is very private and we are working on it."
