2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

But still I think the Russian public opinion is against participating as neutral athletes. I saw on social media the hashtag # noRussian noGames. I wonder how the public will impact the athletes' decision if they are allowed to choose on their own. I just hope Putin will have a moderate discourse and even some fragile indications that he is backing the Russian atlethes' participation.

People blame Mutko and other Russian officials, who are responsible for this situation. They also weren't ready to defend Russian athletes at court.
Media will present this ban as US vendetta. Public won't blame athletes, only Russian and international officials.

I would take that with a pinch of salt. That was what she said before the decision had been announced so I wouldn't expect her to have said at that point that she will compete no matter what.
I think people will support any decision she'll make.

I think maybe the politicians will justify competing under the olympic flag in saying that every medal they win is a medal, other countries can't win? I think then there would be no stress for the athletes who really want to compete, no matter what colours are on that piece of fabric. Plus, everyone knows that they are from Russia. It's not like their heritage is brainwashed out of every single person that will be watching the Olympics.

Well, had some contact with people by now.
People do blame the west, and put it on the same list as all the other sanctions really. No media presentation required, it just looks like that.

Also, keep in mind that most russian people learned very well during 90s that you cannot have any sort of civilized dealings with the West, so they wont even blame russian gov for not defending their athletes, as it would be all playing the western countries games by their rules, which will be rigged to keep them winning anyways.

Yesterday a russian info portal life.ru made an internet poll. There were more than 6000 votes and 82% support boycott. And boycott is about athlets, not officials. So I am really worried that a big portion of russian fans will not support this. In Russia it is really important to show respect for the flag and anthem. I remember especially one forum comment I read at sovsport or liferu. It was like "if they want to go, they should go. They will just represent themselves". This is all just so damn sad. Russian ladies are 1000% clean. They have never doped. And now they are humilitated by IOC decision and risk their relation with russian fan base.

Damned if you go, damned if you don't. :(

But how that will work. For example, FS team event. How the qualification will work, and so on?

I suppose things will stay the same as before, only that the Russian team will the Olympic team of athletes from Russia or something similar, and no Russian symbols for them.

And what is wrong with representing yourself?

I am probably one of the few people who feel this way, but to me Olympics are not at all about countries. They are about being the best in the event that takes place once every four years. I don't watch the Olympics because of countries that are there, I watch it because world's top athletes in many sports and disciplines are there at the same time.

I truly hope all athletes who stand a chance to medal decide to go. Ladies and pairs events for one just won't be the same without them and to me those medals wouldn't have the same meaning if the best in the world aren't there to fight for them.

I 1000 percent agree with you. Olympics is about being the best in a sport and not about what countries participate or not.

Here is sports ru poll (48 000 votes) 55% don't support boycott

Russian fans feel themselves at war, so they support victory or boycott. I'm afraid failure won't be tolerated this time

Ask your Russian friends/relatives what they think about Mutko and his team )

This. I don't watch Olympics (since Rio 2016)

That's fine. I still do. I rather enjoyed rhythmic gymnastics in Rio. I gasped when the Russian gymnast dropped her club and lost her gold medal because of it. Thought she was superb.

This is a nice one, but I found second, very negative (I feel This way) poll. 250 000 votes and 72% think it is "unacceptable" to go as "neutral athlets":

Sure more people think that boycott is the answer. As I've said before, elections are coming and Putin can benefit from boycott. My only hope he will be rational and think about athletes first. I think fans won't hate athletes who will complete without Russian flag, people blame Mutko, his team and international officials

When will Putin make his speech?

Duma (Russian Parliament) will discuss the matter on Friday. So, probably on Monday he'll make his speech. I'd say it's 70% that Russia will allow Russian athletes to complete at 2018 Olympics under neutral flag.
Code:

Oh for some reason I thought it was today, don't know why.
I hope that they allow the athletes to participate. It's the right thing to do.

Update. Speech is on next Wednesday. But it is not clear yet, will he make the statement about boycott or not
