2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Yes, it's worth noting that the single highest score on a jump was Wang's. I could see a team with two newbies and a veteran (Wagner or Nagasu) being picked.

But consistency really has been the bugbear

As an American who only became a fan of skating because of Lipnitskaya and know more about the Russian system but who wants the Americans to be good for the health of the sport...

The big difference between the US and Russian system is that the US only has one big significant internal event while Russia as many more. There are about 5 big events and that's not counting Cup of Russia events that are each probably more significant than an American sectionals nor is it counting moscow qualifiers which are sometimes are as competitive as the bigger events. The US's internal competitive system in comparison is extremely boring while Russia's sustains interest in itself regardless of international competition.

It's impossible to copy Russia's system completely in the US(tbh, I think the Russians may compete too much), but most the benefits of it could be gotten just holding a junior nationals done by age. Have 3 divisions, 10 and younger, 11-12(eligible for JGP next season or in two seasons), 13-17(all skaters eligible for JGP this and next season).

So I expect the 3rd men and lady in the team who will not compete at the team event will go to 4CC since they have extra days before they compete for the individual events.

My team: Angela, Bradie, and Mirai provided that they bring it at nats!

Traditionally none of the Olympic team members have also done 4CC...don’t see it happening this year all of a sudden :scratch2:

I think it would be a great year to send some of the newer, lesser known faces to get some international experience and earn some ranking points. People in this thread have been tossing names around like Starr Andrews or Emmy Ma or Tessa Hong - I don’t know them nor their ability to finish in the 4th-6th range at Nats but just putting it out there.

With the exception of Tallinn Trophy LP, Angela Wang has been bringing it this season. She's been working her butt off and it's showing for her. She's still younger (21) but I feel like this is the year she's going to be showing up at Nationals ready to go.

Even with the LP issues at TT which was on par with anything most of the other US ladies have shown us lately, since no one has really been perfect.

Angela has the speed, the refinement, the smooth deep edges, she has actual height on her jumps, and nice spins.
Out of curiosity...why wasn't Angela chosen for a Grand Prix event? Amber replaced Gracie at Cup of China but Angela had done much better than here in terms of results in 2017? And the only American at IdF was Polina and she wasn't Gracie's replacement so who was? And Courtney was invited to Skate Canada but Angela was beat her at Philadelphia? And Angela finished higher than both at Nationals.

USFSA does not pick the replacements for Gracie, that's all I know.

To be invited to the GP you have to meet specific criteria. If you weren’t in the top 12 at worlds, then they pick from the top 24 in the world ranking and the top 24 high scores. If you aren’t in either group, you could qualify for a alternate spot if you in the next ten of the top scoring skaters.

Angela didn’t compete last year internationally because of injury. So she wasn’t in the top scoring skaters and couldn’t be chosen for a GP slot. It’s sad. But next season, she stands a good chance at getting a spot.

Exactly what frida80 said. :)

The rules are the same for everyone. The reason everyone isn't doing it is because backloading is hard. Whatever the rules are, it is likely that the same skaters would be at the top because the most talented will find ways to take advantage of any scoring system. Even with backloading and tanos, Evgenia and Alina are beatable because neither are getting +3 for their jump elements. The problem is that none of the women can skate clean LPs with stronger jumps. If Kaetlyn or Gabby could do all their jumping passes as well as their 3-3 combos, their scores would rival the Russians.

actually i agree with you.

even the U.S. ladies of ashley, karen, mirai, bradie.

if they could consistently do it rival the russian ladies.

let add in Carolina Kostner, not U.s.

The problem is the U.S. ladies has not been consistent under this scoring system for whatever reason.

the can challenge and rival the Russian, beat them

They 1st have to believe and trust in themselves, 2nd training that they can & will do it.

Angela wasn't eligible for a Grand Prix event in the initial selection round (held back in June) because she wasn't on the Seasons Best Score list from which the candidates (and GP substitutes, later on) are chosen. She also wasn't in the top 24 on the World Ranking list. Angela wasn't on the list because she was injured last fall and withdrew from her GP event and didn't do a Challenge event or ISU Championship event (4CC). B events other than Challenges don't get on the SB list.

She did do two Challenge events this fall so will be eligible for the GP next season.

Angela is such a wildcard. She's one of my favorite skaters and has been since I saw her back in 2012 as a Junior. I would LOVE to see her make the team...

I want to say who my team of ladies is to go but I won't because I don't want to jinx them. ;)

Angela unfortunately has had a history of having one brilliant program at Nationals and one subpar one. She breaks hearts year after year. Maybe this year will be different....

She's working more with a new(er) coach and he's been really doing wonders for her. I have my fingers crossed.

Thank you! Angela's an amazing skater! She has great qualities so if she puts it all together at Nationals she can definitely do it. Such an underrated skater!

Seriously......I try not to ask dumb questions and I asked because I didn't know. Usually GS posters have knowledge which is why I ask here before heading to google.

'Dumb' questions are often what many want to ask. Ask away people! If nobody wants to answer, so be it.

And seriously who(except for the most dedicated) can keep track of the lesser known US lady skaters when nobody really sticks out; like knowing Hanna with an h or without :ohwell:

Andromache had a suggestion of sending the top three skaters at Nationals who don't make the Olympic team to 4 CC then picking the best three from those events and sending them to Worlds. I do feel like we could see some breakthroughs this year--that it's a transitional period for American Ladies.
