2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Her poor SP performance at SkAm, followed by her pullout during the LP, followed by this late change of program have opened the doors for doubt.

I'm going out on a limb. I predict she WD's from US Nats and petitions for an Olympic spot.

Why would she do that? You think she is too injuried to compete at nationals?

She's clearly got some injury, or at least she claimed one, and those take time to heal. She's clearly not confident in her program, or she wouldn't be changing it this late in the season.

Her performances and scores this season haven't been all that noteworthy, and she has no clear separation on merit from the rest of the US Ladies pack.

Her chances of making the team are better trying to gain a "reputation spot" than competing and having a bad result at US Nats that leaves her off the podium.

She's not stupid, and that's why I predict she'll withdraw.

But would Wagner truly have a clear path on the "injury bye" route? I'm not convinced. I'd say it would heavily depend on who ultimately lands in the Nationals top 3.

In other words, she may as well compete unless she is physically unable to.

I doubt Ashley would WD, because I seriously cannot see the US fed wanting to pull another Ashley-Mirai situation. I also tend to think Ashley's accomplishments are not impressive enough this and last season to get a spot by petition. If my memory serves me right Jason Brown once petitioned for a spot and didn't get it even though he was 4th in the previous worlds.

Is the injury bye only for those who WD before the competition, or would it also apply to someone who WD's during the competition? I need to know this to expand my conspiracy theory.

Do you guys realize skaters can't just pull an old program out of their pockets and do it the way you are used to it? It isn't up to current standards and components etc. :palmf:

I'm so tired of hearing on here.....Well he/she/they should just go back to something they skated 5+ years ago. :bang:

Also, why would Ashley want to go head to head with Osmond with Black Swan. :hopelessness:

I don't necessarily think Ashley should go back to Black Swan, but her interpretation and performance of that music was miles above Osmond's. Tech may be a different story.

I didn't know Ashley's injury was this serious? I'm sure she'll do everything she can to compete at nationals. GO Ashley!

ETA OK I see now TontoK, it's a conspiracy theory

Conspiracy theory for now, but I'll stand by my prediction. She'll WD.

I agree. I don't wish ill will on any skater. All I want is for the best skaters to go to Korea. If that's Ashley, spectacular. If not, send whomever earns their way there. I think this discussion stems from the fact that we didn't have a dominant lady this fall.

Ashley cannot WD and she knows it very well. The only thing she was able to talk about after SkAm was Nationals and nothing else.

Mirai and Karen do not do well under pressure and tend to have problems here and there, rest of the girls are rarely in the discussion and they do not have the PCS. I am not as impressed with Bradie as some of you are and I am curious how she will handle the Nats but even if she can skate as she did during the season I don't think all THREE of Mirai, Karen and Bradie can go clean. Bell could be a surprise bronze but again, it depends on which girls will be having a good day. I think it's quite reasonable to think that Ashley will be at least 4th (more likely the 3rd, 2nd if she is lucky and the 1st if her La La Land turned out to be magnificent and she has her second-once in a lifetime Boston 2016 moment). Anything below the 4th for her requires serious technical problems or a terrible program or judges holding up the newcomers in my opinion.

If she does not compete at Nats, I do not think there is any reason to send her to the Olympics since Chen is the defending Gold medalist, Mirai has upped her tech and Bradie had a successful season. If they make the podium they should go in my opinion. Olympics is not that far away. Ashley might be chosen over Bell, I know I would, but under these circumstances I do not think she will have a successful case for the Olympics especially with a brand new program.

But if she competes she can be in the top 3, not all are consistent. If she cannot she can still have a case with a 4th especially if there is a surprise newcomer at the podium. I personally would choose Ashley with a 4th over Bradie or Bell with a Bronze, if there is small points difference in between and her program looks Olympic-worthy since you can always trust in high PCS but technical scores can let you down with the smallest mistake (unless you are Medvedeva-perfect of course)

I would ideally want Karen, Ashley, Mirai on the podium and at the Olympics without much debate. But Bradie is a real contender this season and I am afraid of the huge debates that will follow if someone else is chosen over her.

I think Ashley will have a similar nationals this time around as the one in 2016. She’s talking abt wanting to win, but I think she will go in just determined to make the podium, and hold back slightly to save all she has for the olympics.

If Ashley withdrew and petitioned for an Olympic spot, I doubt she'd get it. There's no guarantee she'd be in competitive shape 5 weeks later (the start of the Os). Over the past two seasons, she hasn't proven herself significantly better than the ladies who are ready to compete at Nationals 2018. The only way I could see her getting the nod would be if Nationals was a major splatfest and half the podium age ineligible or inexperienced.

I thought the only two women who got medical byes for the Olympics were Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan.

Michelle eventually pulled out of the 2006 Olympics, and Nancy had knee problems ...

I tend to think that whether or not Ashley will be on the Oly team is a gamble anyway at this point. But going to nationals and competing for a podium finish is a WAY safer gamble than trying to petition for a spot without participation.

This isn't the off-season. This is the OLYMPIC season. Aren't there better things to talk about than conspiracy theories?

Taking a few days off from this site and returning to this thread to see discussions of Ashley WDing from Nationals almost gave me a heart attack. It takes a couple minutes of backreading to realize....it's based on literally nothing.
