Also, with her 3F+3T bonus, getting 13 points, is that the highest scoring element ever scored for the ladies at US Nationals? (I feel like Angela Wang did a 3Z+3T+2T at some point?)

I'll just add to this that not all home schooling experiences are created equal. Some online home school programs are flat-out bad - the priority is on making money off of school districts who just want to see kids passing without having to spend too much money on an online option, rather than on actually providing an education (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...ourses_are_underregulated_in_many_states.html).

The biggest drawback I've noticed with homeschooled kids tends to be a lack of social interactions but I guess that too comes with positives and negatives. I know Mariah had a good stable school life and was able to maintain it and skate. The school even nominated her student of the year once.

I think location and ice availability are huge factors but I see nothing wrong with any of the schooling options we have in the states. I do wish we'd push our juniors a bit harder though in the competitive circuit and develop a better national competition circuit.

Based on how much she is discussed, I would say Ashley Wagner is number 1 US lady.

She is the most well-known and accomplished of the current US women, so it's natural that she would be the most discussed. The events considered for Olympic selection represent a very limited subset of events that she has built her legacy around, so I don't think she has a leg up on anyone going into Nationals.

I just checked the results and was very surprised to see such score from Alysa (184). That is a pretty strong score, like Eunsoo Lim got in this year's JGP for example. Is she really that good? And if so, is there any videos?

AlexRus endorses her with high praise and I have always put trust into their assessments. :agree:

I wish it were kool for skaters could stay in skool longer, especially before high school. I don't like the thought of kids that young homeschooling, just to concentrate on the career of "professional athlete." Especially in figure skating, where there isn't a large professional circuit.

Then again, I also understand that (1) skating is expensive and so is college, and (2) not everyone is wealthy enough to afford skating into their twenties, and (3) this sport favors the pre-pubescent body. Ugh I don't like this sport being one in which you peak at age 18 or 19.

Maybe if I watch the ladies SP this evening I'll feel better

Tax evasion. Interesting tidbit, the only way the judge even knew about it (she was filing for bankruptcy on the Pittsburg studio at the time) was when he saw a commercial for the show, recognized Abby, and realized that there's no way she could be bankrupt with such a lucrative TV show.

Judging by her videos from a while ago, she really is very good. If I were to try to compare her, I'd say that she's not quite as good as the strongest Russian skaters were at that same age(Like Gubanova), but better than the rest. But really, it's tough to find even very many Russian girls who truly were clearly better. Gubanova's the only one who I'm fully confident about. Perhaps Shcherbakova during that one skate.

She also might be the strongest junior of the 05-06 age group in the world(Remains to be seen obviously).


Now, it's still important to note that her PCS potential to me isn't sky high at this point in time so I'm not sure how she would rank if she's against skaters who do land 7 clean triples with no issues - Could she set herself apart? That's what I'm doubtful of. Of course, quads / 3As would help with that if she is to be the strong jumper type.


And a note about Gubanova: While she indeed was better at that age, her jump tech even at that point was a total ticking time bomb. Alysa's technique isn't perfect but it's significantly better. Let's say I wouldn't even be shocked if she was the strongest junior skater during the 19-20 season, which says something when it's about a 13yo American skater. .

Thank you for explaining her strengths in such an articulate way. It's sometimes hard for me to put into words what makes her special, because it isn't so much about skating technique or ability. Skaters like Karen and Mirai are good expressing nuances in music with their arms, but with Ashley I feel like movement comes from a deeper place within her. Unlike a lot of other skaters, she moves differently based on the tempo of the music and the style of the piece.

Lol, thats some schadenfreude right there.

I think the bonus is to reward Novice/lower skaters who attempt triples. Clearly it's something many have made use of, and why not at Nationals. In gymnastics they give a 0.1 bonus for stuck landings at National competitions.
