2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

There IS a clear selection process in place, and it has been outlined multiple times. It’s the same as the one used for the last Olympics; it led to Ashley Wagner’s selection over Mirai Nagasu. US Championships is one of the criteria; other international competitions come into the mix as well.
Adam was better than Jason during all this season.
GP + GPF this year
Adam: 262, 266 and 254
Jason: 261, 245 and 253
Putting Jason into the team ahead of Adam would be blatant favoritism.

Maybe it was Adam whose mom was on the selection committee, very sad for Ross though. I would have gone with the top three.
Lol, this is not even funny. Ross delivered just this one time in this season and his previous one wasn't also good. Adam absolutely deserves to go.

It makes sense. Ross is nice to watch when he succeeds but that seems to happen once every blue moon.
The biggest problem is that if Zhou was scored fairly on PCS and wasn't given like 15 more points than he should for the FS, Ross would be going. I really doubt they'd go through the trouble of flipping Ross for Zhou in that case.

It does. But look at Vincent's record year. It has been far below people's expectations, and his skating looks much to be desired. If they wanted to send Rippon, it should have been at the expense of Vincent.

I definietly agree, but there is another factor. At 2014, when Ashley was chosen over Mirai, tons of people started attacking US fed that they were racist and chose three blonde white girls. It's possible that there would be such people again and would think that it was racist to put Vincent out of the team (which would be funny, since Nathan could finish last and still would be going for the Olympics).
Adam deserves to go, but I dont see why they didnt bump Zhou instead
Its not like he had a great season, and its not like he can rotate his quads.

Nathan had to work extremely hard to gain USFSA support. And I would even say he should have won the US title in 2016 too.

I'll be gutted for Ross but it is so painfully obvious that he didn't have a shot at the team no matter how well he skated (unless he won, which wasn't happening). I mean, his scores throughout the season aren't just lower, they are abysmal. Kudos to him for getting it together at Nationals though. Hopefully he can go to 4CC and maybe even win there.
And regardless of what happens, nobody can take away his performances at Nationals this year.

Who do you think has the greater chance at an individual medal- Ross or Zhou?
I can't even imagine saying Ross. He had a great skate last night but the chances of him replicating it are slim.

Vincent always URs, it's just a question of the tech panel in place whether, and how many, get called. Yet USFSA chose anyway to ludicrously inflate his PCS. I am sorry but that was a nonsense number. It is that PCS that placed him there. Well, they made their bed.
I hope Ross gets 4CC and skates really well, for his own sake.

Honestly though, if at Russian Nationals Leonova had had the skate of a lifetime, would you have sent her over an underperforming Sotskova who did great at the GP and had a wonderful season?

Well, Worlds 2016.
Pogorilaya had a very lame season - 4th and 9th at her GPs, ofc she didnt make GPF. Then she had a good skate at nationals, and got into team.
Even more, she then bombed Europeans. Russian Fed still sent her to worlds.

No one is talking about putting Jason on any team over Adam.
But FYI, the selection criteria also includes 2017 Worlds (Tier 1), 4CCs (Tier 2), 2017 Challenger events (Tier 3) and 2017 Nationals (Tier 3), not just 2018 Nats (Tier 1), the GPF (Tier 1) and the GP events (Tier 2). Jason bombed his FS here, but he was strong in all the other selection criteria.

Well, they kind of did given the selection criteria... going in, Miner had no recent body of work to fall back on.
It sucks for him but they were very clear that the decision wouldn't be based on just Nationals. Which I think is a fair way to do it. Adam had an off day but was waaaayyyy better throughout this season and last season compared to Ross. Zhou would get nailed technically but even his UR quads are worth more than triples and he has had stronger results internationally compared to Ross.
It's sad to say, but yes Ross didn't have a chance from the get-go (unless Chen pulled out), and he (and any of the other US men who had no criteria - like Hochstein) should have known it's more than one competition that determines the team and thus they had no shot over the main team contenders (unless the other team contenders supremely bombed, like Max coming 9th, or even Jason coming 6th).
