2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Well, 2nd at Nats means nothing then. I hope this decision will boost popularity of figure skating in the US again

Sam Auxier: On the criteria, we looked Adam's seasons. He had one of the strongest seasons of all the men based on average scores. He was selected for Worlds last year but had to pull out due to injury. We looked at the criteria, average scores over the season, and head-to-heads

Sam Auxier: Vincent had his placement here. Last year, he was the World junior champion, and he also had placements at Finlandia and other competitions, where head-to-head against some of the other skaters, he was the top US men
.

Well, the selection is what I expected and what I think is fair. I don't support making the decision only on one competition and whilst in ladies the other competitions didn't set anyone much forward, in men's it was more obvious that Adam has a good case for him. Good luck to the team, now let's hear, who go to worlds (i guess, the same men) and to 4CC.

Adam Rippon: When I found out what the Olympic team was, I texted Ross Miner and I told him that I was proud of what he did yesterday and how well he skated. He texted me right back and told me he was very happy for me
.

Adam Rippon: Four years ago, I didn't know if I wanted to continue skating, and a year ago, I was sitting in a cast. I've been very consistent and I'm very grateful for this opportunity. And I feel like my experience will help me have a great performance at the Olympic games

Well, they kind of did given the selection criteria... going in, Miner had no recent body of work to fall back on.

It sucks for him but they were very clear that the decision wouldn't be based on just Nationals. Which I think is a fair way to do it. Adam had an off day but was waaaayyyy better throughout this season and last season compared to Ross. Zhou would get nailed technically but even his UR quads are worth more than triples and he has had stronger results internationally compared to Ross.

It's sad to say, but yes Ross didn't have a chance from the get-go (unless Chen pulled out), and he (and any of the other US men who had no criteria - like Hochstein) should have known it's more than one competition that determines the team and thus they had no shot over the main team contenders (unless the other team contenders supremely bombed, like Max coming 9th, or even Jason coming 6th).

Maybe it was the season why Ross skated so well. He thought his result wouldn't matter since he probably wouldn't get into thr Olympics so he didn't feel any pressure and just wanted to skate his planned content.

I'll probably be on the fence about the ladies team choices until I'm dead, but the absolute right thing was done here. SO THRILLED for Adam, he really earned this opportunity.

Slightly condescending to say how proud Adam was of Ross? Is he his mentor or something???

:scratch3: he was telling Ross that he thinks Ross has skated really well and achieved something great by coming in 2nd at Nats

I thought it was nice. Sort of to say that you were better than me on this day and I know that, even though I was chosen over you.

Jesus Adam shows great sportmanship and tries to confort Ross and there are still people who are unhappy.

Sometimes I think no matter what people do, they will be still critisized.

For everyone wondering about the criteria:

Sam Auxier: The Tier 1 criteria (US Champs, Worlds, Grand Prix Final) allows us to look at more than just one competition. We look at other competitions to see who can perform best at the Olympics

Adam:

Adam Rippon: At 1st, I was upset with the way I skated. That last minute of that program is the biggest mistake that I've made in the last 2 yrs. I tried to remember the work that I had done and put in. I'm in the best shape of my life.

I wish he would stop talking himself up. I think it's right that he's going but at this point, after all the talk prior to Nationals, he just needs to say thank you and resume practices.

Where is the talking up? He is not saying he will have a great performance necessaruly, he says it might help him. He never said he wouldn't work hard.

Agree with the team. However, I think it's a bit tacky that Jason is 1st alternate over Ross.

I think it falls in line with the criteria of not only using one competition (in the case of Jason and Adam, only the FS as they both shined in the SP) to decide. Sad for Ross though, it must be really hard for him.
