Don't forget Eunsoo Lim and Young You from Korea. It's going to be quite the competitive field, but it will be good for Ting and Starr to get this experience!

That is true too. I believe if Ting throws down an fs like she did at nationals with the short she put out at her JGP, she could be competitive. I don't know if Starr could be competitve though, with no lutz and only 3t-3t BUT I am rooting for her so much. She is one of my favorites.

Let's see. Nathan skated his Nationals winning FS on Saturday. Sunday was the Smucker's gala. And guess who skated the most energetic program, with jumps everywhere and getting a huge ovation. And that was just for fun. That was the next day. He was hugely motivated to skate a great gala program the next day, and people say he couldn't get motivated for a Olympic medal in 4 days??

It's not all about stamina and physical conditioning. I wrote this a couple of pages back - a good skate at big events in which you give your all emotionally, connect with the audience and truly get into your program can leave you empty. As skaters we are conditioned to give two performances in such a short period.

Neither Yuzu nor Patrick did both programs in the team event in 2014. Tatsuki Machida did the LP for Japan, while Kevin Reynolds did the LP for Canada.

I agree. Nathan needs to be as fresh as possible for the individual event. Look at what happened to Plushy in 2014....The same thing with Yulia. Nathan is young and he can come back in 2022 and put his energy into the team event similar to what Plushy and Yulia did. After he's made his mark on the skating world.

I just wonder what that would look like. Would the USFSA give international assignments to a veteran skater who doesn't do the flip or lutz, or would she have to regain those before skating in Senior B's?

I guess it depends on what she'll be like in the summer. She's unlikely to get a GP unless she gets a SkAm host pick, which wouldn't be totally out of reason, though I'd love to see a skater like Starr get it.

This is exactly how I feel. With Bradie, Karen and Starr being so young and some VERY promising young skaters coming up. One has to wonder if Polina's skating will be relevant in 2022. Good for her if she can do it.

I'm going to disagree with you just a bit. The comparison with Nathan and Plushenko is not a good one. Plushenko was at the swan song of his career, and I think the whole purpose of his being named to the team was to boost the chances of the Team Even medal. I don't think it was ever envisioned by the Rus Fed that he would have a good chance of doing both, and I was certainly not surprised by his withdrawal from the individual event.

In contrast, Nathan has young legs. He seems to have the heart of a competitor. I remember an interview where he said he was training for four skates in Korea.

I wonder who in the Fed will make the final call.

Competition aside, given how Mirai and Ashley have been in the last couple of seasons, I am actually hoping that Polina and Gracie can have their own comeback stories. Whether that means another Olympics for them, there are other victories in between we can celebrate. Gracie tweeted that she was inspired by the ladies' event so I'm really hoping to see her enjoy skating again.

I agree....That's why I think Nathan should wait until 2022 before he puts his focus on the team. Nathan doesn't even have a World Medal at this point and he needs to focus on himself. Plushy was already a World and Olympic Champion with legions of fans (Including Me ) by 2014. Nathan is still a teenager and I don't think it would be wise to spread himself too thin. Not this year.

I don't want to predict the future, but unless Starr loses her jumps and momentum over the off season, she is probably the odds on favorite for SkAm host pick.

From my untrained eyes, Starr has relatively shallow edges compared to her competitors. Unless she beefs up her SS, I can see a Samantha Cesario-esque career for her, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'd really like a US lady with great SS rise up in the ranks. And I hope Gracie is serious about a comeback.

This is upsetting. I was looking forward to seeing Ashley redeem herself in 4CC and Starr do well at JW. I can understand why they both dropped out though. It has to an emotional blow to not be named to the team. Ross isn’t going to 4CC either.

As for Starr, she’s still recovering from her injury and doesn’t have her Lutz. Plus it would give her only a month to practice her junior program. Maybe it’s best for her to end her season early and focus on recovery and then improving her Lutz edge. Now she can focus on giving the best performance at 4CC she can.
