Poor Angela. I'm not sure what happened. She seemed like she was in a better head space after nationals. But I think she can come back from this. She has talent and just needs to gain the confidence to execute it.

As I've said before, sick, jetlag which both mess up stamina.

I just watched the Charlie White NBCSN version and it's not stamina/endurance issues because she trains at elevation year round.

I think Starr has a great future. Besides raw talent, she has kind of an IT factor.

However, in the FS at 4CC, it looked like she was rushing. That might account for the mistakes. I'm thinking the mistakes and rushing might also have been provoked by having her also do the singing on her program music. It a) may have distracted her by thinking of singing rather than skating, b) let her anticipate as if she were singing; c) thrown off her jump timing; and d) made her hyper alert instead of comfy. I'm thinking she might have been able to settle down more if she'd used the original, sink into someone else's big voice and steadiness, and let it power her along.

What I think happened to Starr is what I call "winner's head." Just after nailing a program like never before, your next competition is not good. It happens to practically everyone. When you try to skate the way you did that previous time, you feel a lot of pressure to be as good what you consider you at your best. It's a lot and sometimes skaters completely fall apart. I think Starr recovered nicely after her mistakes. Best of all, only one under rotation. Not to mention this was 4CC! She did quite well considering.

Now that her season is over, she can finally rest along with Angela and Mariah. Nobody was perfect, but I enjoyed seeing this week.

It's true. Angela hasn't gone as far as Taiwan to compete and I think she got sick after nationals as well.

Yuck. Why was there such an out break?! So many people got sick! Was it someone who decided to work behind the scenes that ended up spreading it? They need to take steps to prevent that in the future.

Some people have a easier time with jetlag then others. I'm sure training at elevation helps with fitness because that's why so many middle/long distance runners train at least sometimes at altitude. Apparently it can help with respiratory efficiency as well.

Yes, she should be. She's only 21.

My issue wasn’t who spread it, but how did it spread so quickly and to so many people. Either this was a super contagious virus or someone dropped the ball on sanitation.

It reminds me when a substituted for a coworker working retail ages ago. I didn’t know it at the time but the coworker had viral pink eye. I definitely knew the next day when I got it. My mother, an RN had a long conversation with my boss about how contagious it was and how to properly disinfect. (Super embarassing for me!) My boss followed through, ending the spread.

There has to be a way to contain the spread of illnesses in competitions. We can’t have skaters picking up the flu just before their next major competition. Not to mention the audience paid good money to see them and now think why risk coming to see skaters live and get sick when you can view it safety from home.

I'm pretty sure it was the flu. This year's flu vaccine isn't especially effective against one of the strains that's been prominent this year. Unfortunately the strain seems to be a particularly nasty one. It's taken out a lot of people I know up here and my friends elsewhere in NA say the same (including me!).

ETA: And of course as vaccination rates go down, it spreads more and you end up with nastier strains that are easier to catch. An unfortunate storm.

She said she can see a number of futures for herself, both with and without pursuing elite-level figure skating.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a skater, even in the past three or four years,” she said. “I feel like I keep making improvements. If I stop now, I feel like I wouldn’t be sad. I’d feel like I’m leaving on a good note. But if I continue, I definitely feel like I still have more to offer.” ...

BTW, in case anyone missed it, Jackie Wong interviewed Angela and Mirai (separately) for the latest episode of Ice Talk . Episode 59.

Among many other things, Mirai said that her parents and her boyfriend will be going to OWG.
I'm so happy for her and for them.
Especially for her parents, who rarely are able to take a break from their restaurant.

It had seemed to me that you were wondering whether Patient Zero was someone over whom the LOC or USFS (or a similar "authority") had any kind of jurisdiction -- e.g., a staffer, contractor, volunteer, or the like. A person who could have been told/"ordered" to just go home and to stay away from the event.

It was not so.

It’s ok. Airborne virus are very nasty, and I could tell your post this person was a VIP and had to be there. It just amazes me how many people this virus spread to. Other skaters, volunteers, the audience... just over the course a few days. This virus has to be super contagious and the incubation period must be very short. Wonder what could’ve been done to mitigate the spread. Maybe we should adopt the face mask of Japan along with free bottles of hand sanitizer. Or make Airborne a new sponsor of USFS.

“Airborne Skate America” sounds weird though.

BTW ... so happens that little bottles of hand sanitizer were among the USFS-branded freebies available at the USFS information desk at SAP Center.
Along with things like pens, mints, lip balm, sunglasses, and I forget what else.

The free hand sanitizer had nothing specifically to do with the bug going around Nats.
USFS offered pretty much the same assortment of freebies -- including hand sanitizer -- at Skate America in Lake Placid.

(As a sponsor, Puffs was giving away small packets of tissues at SAP Center. Presumably a long-standing marketing plan unrelated to the bug going around.)

Puffs loves having their kiss and cry moments. I’m sure Kaori and Mai had to make the list this time! Super cute.

Since it was clearly airborne I think facial mask may have been the way to go, along with doing double duty on disinfecting common areas. Now I’m starting to feel like Howard Hughes.

Retail is the worst job imagine able from an infectious standpoint... customers shop irregardless of how they feel, coughing all over you and merchandisease which sales associates must handle. I usually remain healthy thru flu season, but I too filled in briefly in a retail situation once and came down with the worst flu of my life, so miserable!!
