He'll get the quad.

He just needs to stop thinking about it so much. Sometimes you want something so badly it will backfire on you. It sounds like 4CC was a good step to let go of everything and relax. He has a few months to train just in case that Worlds call comes along, but really it's low key so he can just focus on mastering the quad(s) with out the pressure of making the Olympic team.
 
That makes sense. Kayne and O'Shea probably needed to closer because we only have one pair for the team event. The men's event is not until the 16th (and 17th), so if something happens between now and then, there's plenty of time to fly over and get over jet-lag.
 
I just love seeing pictures of Jason with children. Every now and them he posts a picture of himself with Kori's little girl - calls her his little munchkin. Heck, he's probably helped raise those kids.

I agree with Mrs. P that he'llget the quad(s). As I've mentioned, I saw him at 2 practices and warmups for his LP at Nationals and he landed quads in all of them. And they weren't 2-footed and they had a nice flow out. I really think it's a confidence thing which is strange because I always think of him as being so confident. I guess people have just made too much of it and it's in his head.

Had the quad landing not been so bad at the free skate, it would had really turned out differently. Even from the other side of the rink, you could see the hesitation in his body language. In a sense, the layout might have not been so ideal for that reason. Basically he had to face his two nemesis jumps, the 3A and the 3Lo -- one after the other -- and not surprisingly, he UR-ed both of them -- and then the mistakes just piled up.

He really put a lot of his worth this season in pulling off the quad and I think that really put a hit on his confidence. I think going back to the no-quad layout + the old program was a way to remind him that he can score a lot of points, quad or no and that the quad is a way to build on his excellent foundation not the be-all, end-all.

I also feel like he kinda struggles with where he fits among the top men. It seems that he does his worst (see NHK Trophy this season and U.S. nationals) when he's thrust in the spotlight or just when he's on the edge of breaking through that glass ceiling. I feel like doing the quad was associated with a breakthrough and when it wasn't coming together he kinda had an identity crisis. In any case, 4CC did what it needed to and he can move forward. He has a lot of fun things to look forward to -- SOI, Grant's wedding among them.

On a side note, I noticed (or rather Twitter keeps telling me) that Jason liked a few tweets involving Nathan, like the one about his Super Bowl commericial. I think he is sincerely cheering for him (and the rest of the team), which is cool to see.

Jason is a team player. I don't think it's in his makeup to be jealous or contentious which speaks to how he was raised. Skating is important to him but I think it isn't his be-all and end-all. I remember reading that his parents said if his back injury was serious and dangerous to his future health that he would be done skating. They obviously care more about his well-being than medals or notoriety. Sounds like a really healthy family.

I do think he isn't fond of the spotlight and the pressure that comes with it. He loves skating for the pure joy of skating - the rest is noise.

I wish I was going to SOI this year but it's on Mother's Day in San Jose and my family would not be happy. For those of you who do get to see him - I'm very, very jealous....but happy for you. When he's finished with competition my hope for him is to be a core member of the SOI cast. It couldn't be more perfect than that.

Great article. I wish she hadn’t focused quite so much on Riverdance, but I can see why she did, and I’m glad that people who remember him primarily from the Olympics will know why he’s not there. I do wish she’d been able to include the info that he medaled at 4CCs.

Okay - my favorite quote in the article really has nothing to do with Jason, but speaks directly to me (and probably a lot of us here - I’m looking at you, TMC!) about fandom:

“The night of the short program found me in a state of hyperventilation, on the verge of vomiting up my own heart. Watching sports in real time has always been torturous to me, because on some fundamental level I believe that if I don’t hope hard enough, the athlete will never get off the ground. Back to Jason, I love that the NYT has recognized him in such depth. I think USFS and Team USA have finally realized what they have in him, but I’m glad to hear this very public voice weighing in on the state of the sport at a time when the ISU is considering rebalancing TES / PCS / GOE.
 
The NYT magazine likely has some super early deadlines, so she probably wrote this well before 4CC and it was likely layout before then too.

The author is a high profile poet. And this is her first piece for the magazine and she chose to write about Jason! Kinda interesting (not surprising, really) how the art world has embraced him. I do hope TPTB too pays close attention.

I remember seeing the initial tweet/query from the author to Jason to establish contact. It basically said she wanted to interview him for NYTM and asked how to get the ball rolling.
IIRC, that tweet was months before Nats.

:laugh2: This is so true - I don't think I have ever been able to watch any of Jason's performances live (apart from at Worlds)! This is why I really appreciate having friends who understand my predicament and are willing to DM me PBPs while I look away from my computer screen :laugh2: :thank:

The article was great - the writing is really top drawer and she managed to put into words so much of what I've felt watching Jason, like things that I've understood on an emotional level but never managed to verbalise. My favourite is the part where she talks about how the performer and the audience "collaborate in one another's happiness".

Yeah I assumed it was a deadline thing. And very cool that the author joins high profile artists like Lin Manuel Miranda and Benj Pasek as a Jason fan.

I like that she acknowledges Nathan, Vincent and Adam in the article, but still, it’s Jason she compares to Michele Kwan for his ability to reach out and touch people.

So many people think it’s an Olympic gold medal winner that will bring US fans back to skating - I’m sure that’s true for many, but for others like me - not so much.

Nathan is definitely getting plenty of buzz. I had all sorts of friends tweet about him yesterday regarding the Super Bowl commercial. So certainly being a Gold medal contender that does tons of quads certainly can draw one part of that every-four-year audience.

Jason will clearly draw a different one, the ones promoted by the likes of the author, Miranda, and Pasek. But Michelle Kwan didn't only touch people, she also was able to meld that connection with some technical firepower. Jason has the potential to do that and move him beyond the "fan favorite" category. I hope he does.

Turns out my office subscribes to the Sunday NYT and my co-worker told me she's going to set it aside for me. Yay!

I also checked out the author -- her book, released last year, sounds really good!

Just came running in here too, saw it on Twitter and of course leapt to read it. But just skimmed, so I need to go back....

(Poor spousal unit, like good retired couples we sit in the kitchen together and drink our morning coffee and read, nowadays print and devices, and I screamed “Jason” and made him look at my iPad and said, see this is the skater I really like, he’s in the Times! He swore he would read the article :biggrin:)

So, speaking of which, the online deadline says Jan. 31, but there was no special edition in today’s paper (we go out to buy the Times each morning, and I’m fairly certain the “original” gets trucked down here, only an hour away from North Jersey). Will the print be one of their special edition magazines on Sunday?

Yep Sunday! They always publish their magazine articles online on Wednesday because a lot of people read the Internet on Wednesday/Thursday -- not to mention to garner buzz for their stuff several days ahead of time.

And read the online comments, you would think it was the Jason FF. :biggrin:
