2018 Olympic Season: Men's Figure Skating

If only Yuzu could fix his forward-leaning axis in the 4Lz... the jump could even be less taxing on his ankle than the 4Lo

Orser just revealed that all of Yuzu's jump except 4Lz are ready.

The only thing Yuzu shall do is to scate as he can - clear and breathtaking, No need to try 4Lz.
But...if Orser says this, it doesn't mean Yuzu will not make a decision to do 4Lz

Was that a good decision not to scate in team? It could be like a repetition before the main battle after injury

I guess it depends on the skaters. Nathan and Shoma get better with more competitions. While the rest benefit from mid-season rest period.

Imao this article headline https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/02/olympics-mens-figure-skating-nathan-chen-preview/551900/. "The Men's Figure-Skating Gold Is Nathan Chen's to Lose. The 18-year-old American is already seen as the greatest athlete in the sport’s history." Sorry but even if Chen skated clean I doubt he would beat a clean Hanyu and saying that he is the greatest athlete in the entire figure skating history:rofl:. These American articles are just getting so egotistic and over confident that I'm beginning to think they've already brought the gold. Especially when you consider the time schedule specifically designed to suit American viewers and not even the home fans, I mean how much Korean people can go to watch it when its at 10am. Reminds me of 2010 when there was conspiracy of some kind of big money TV deal between American and ISU for men's gold.

to be honest not only Hanyu, clean Javier and Shoma will beat him too. Article is hilarious

I'll be honest, I didn't read the article, lol! BUT I think the main point is, that Nathan Chen has been undefeated this season, and compared to others, relatively healthy and injury-free. If all skate clean, (or if Javi, or if Shoma, or if Hanyu, etc,) is a VERY big IF. But I actually wouldn't be surprised if Nathan skates clean. I wonder how many fans actually expect a clean performance from any of the top 5 quad-filled programs? I don't. I think it's more likely for the quadless programs to be performed clean (Rippon, Ge), or even the 1, 2 quad programs (Byshenko, Chan).

Americans love like to count nationals too , So I will count JO. Fernandez beat him at Japan Open and he has lost his free skate most of the time. at CoR he lost LP to Hanyu, at SA Rippon won the free, Uno won GPF LP . It was just very favorable and lucky circumstances most of the time. We shall see how he handles media craze and pressure that federation is putting on him.

Yeah, and he’s also just lucky to have given himself so much margin in the SP each time. All luck.

Nathan had the most reliable 4Lz (it was just about the best quad in the field) until the US nationals and now it seems to have disappeared into thin air... The 4Lo disappeared already months ago. But he does have passable 4F and 4T, the sal being a bit of a question mark. It will be interesting to see how he does with these jumps in the SP...

Does Nathan still do a 4Lz? What's going on?

Based on practice reports, I would not consider him a favorite for the gold. His 4F and 4S is very inconsistent, and 4Lz and 4Lo are nonexistent. The 4T is the only one he is landing consistently.

I hope he gets it together, though.

He did do a perfect 4lz in practice according to rockerskating. http://www.rockerskating.com/news/2018/2/6/2018-olympics-practice-notes

Well those media outlets are mostly misinformed or don't bother researching. I'm not surprised haha.

It's not just Nathan there was an article saying Bradie is a gold medal contender.I mean. I really really wish the USFS/US media would stop doing this to their skaters. They have been doing it for years and years and its never ended well. They've ruined mens and ladies skaters with great potential. I wish they would learn. If they would just report the truth and praise them for their achievements, and emphasize on their potential, and support them until that potential is achieved, instead of discarding them when they don't meet unrealistic expectations in an unreasonable amount of time, they could get the US field to flourish.
Nathan is 18 he has amazing potential. He could be truly wonderfully artistic in the future, and stabilize and become consistent with all his jumps. Instead of saying he's balletic now (which even casual fans will be able to see the media exaggeration when they watch), they could say that his background will help him become beautiful in the future, even though it's difficult to bring it together with the tech right now. I know that's not how clickbait works but surely the skaters are more important. Good skaters are the only actual way to save the sport in US, not sensationalizing. They have plenty to sensationalize by emphasizing the depth of the men's field instead of putting it all on Nathan. 6 contenders! when has that ever happened?

I'm just worried what all this media attention will do to them. I want them to do well. and if they don't I'm afraid for backlash.

Why do they think Bradie is a gold medal contender....I mean is she even a medal contender. Are the Russian skaters out or something. I'm an American who is not at this time a Nathan fan because he's not Chan or Hanyu enough in the artistic department or the smooth skating skills. Even for me his landings aren't a dream for me. I wish he were because I think he's such a cutie.

Nathan just skated his worst SP ever since dinosaurs went extinct at the Team's SP, so...

I was concerned about how Chen would handle the pressure of Olympics after seeing him show nerves at the World's last year. The athletes who handle the pressure the best come out on top. I hope some of the pressure will be off Nathan now and he can relax.

One jump does not really mean that he actually has it, does it? They've changed his program layout meaning that it is not reliable enough. But then again, that one 4Lz in practice is better somehow than for poor Kolyada who'se 4Lz is theoretical. He has made now 15 or so attempts in international competitions and has succeeded twice. He did not have it even in practice at Euros...

I said in another thread that Nathan is not the cool customer he is purported to be. Thoughtful and smart and reserved yes but nerves (with added hype ) do get to him. He wants it and he is expected to get it (gold) but I would be surprised if that came to pass. I'm hoping for a medal as I really like him but I think that prospect is doubtful. Top six yes. Clearly he is unravelling. He jumps are MIA. Perhaps he will get it together and do what he capable of. I hope so. Tara and Johnny have clearly been told to hype the hell out of him but you could hear the dismay in their delivery last night after his poor skate. Johnny in the end was blunt and honest about his skate. Most people only pay attention to FSing every Olympic cycle and the focus is on those viewers. NBC needs the folks to stay tuned in and hype and heightened expectations ensure that. It's all about advertising dollars. I do hope I am proven wrong.
