Wenjing Sui & Cong Han

I have complete faith in them.

It's funny. I didn't even know Yuna or watch fs till I saw her on TV during her Sochi SP. It was right in the middle of her flying camel, and I had to stop browsing through channels right there. Utterly breath-taking, and there wouldn't be justice if she didn't win, I thought. The next day, she lost.

It's a similar story with these two, though much earlier than the Olympics of course. I didn't even watch pairs till I saw these two skate in their first grand prix event. And now they've lost too. What they have in common is mental strength and infinite ability. Just like Yuna continued her journey and lit the cauldron this year, these two will continue their journey and be crowned the winners in Beijing.

Dealing with disappointment... You just have to have faith that people whom it's affecting the most have the ability to deal with it best. We as fans can't do anything.

Well said, chopinskate :) It's true that as fans we can't do anything. We can only support who we love to watch and have faith.
(Off topic, but Yuna's 2014 result was really hard for me to accept, especially as I had been following her and the sport since 2010. Seeing her light the cauldron earlier this week was such an inspiring sight to see, and I like the parallels you made about it)

They were so cute in the mix interview place after that cry moment, with sui's tear still in her eyes.
Someone asked how they feel about the silver, Cong answered “we feel sorry that we lost the dream of gold, ... "Wenjing interrupted him with a hit on his stomach and said "we just lost the gold today, we still have dream, it's 2022. We just feel sorry that..." Cong hurrily continued "we lost our dream". Many laughs. :)
I'm so glad they still 'argue and fight' like they always do, it seems they are ok now.

I heard from interviews in CCTV tonight that Wenjing had severe pain on her foot. That can explain the joy when they finally finished the FP.

Hongbo Zhang also explained they didn't try to do injection because that make the foot numb and she couldn't do with that.

Pang on Sui/Han:"It is a bit regretful, but winning a silver at your first Olympics is certainly great achievement. None of us (other Chinese medalists) was able to do that. Don't forget how young they are, and the pressure they had. They will continue to grow in the future."

Olympics are always emotionally taxing :console: A part of me is still getting over 2014!

I'm not as upset as I thought I would be, mainly because I can understand why Sui/Han won silver instead of gold. There seem to be lots of 'they lost from ___" or "if only they had done ___" and in all honesty, there are countless scenarios and elements to scrutinize, however I don't want to focus on that because what has happened has happened already. No point in agonizing over what could've happened. The small point gap is heartbreaking, I'm sure more so for them than any of us watching. Seeing their sad faces during the K&C and medal ceremony wasn't what I wanted to see from them at the end of the Olympics.

Despite all, I'm proud of them for all they've overcome, and I was always a little reassured with the fact that Sui/Han vowed to continue until Beijing. However, as much as I love them, I'm always cautious and tentative to immediately proclaim that they will have the same chance in 4 years. 4 years is a lifetime in skating, especially after following how the pairs field has evolved since 2014. At the time, Sui/Han were only scoring around 70 points in the SP and were basically coming in 3rd in PCS. In this entire quad, they have suffered multiple injuries and surgeries. I don't doubt they can do it, but it does feel like a long time for them to have this chance again. But who knows, S/Z did it in 2010 and S/M did it just now! I'm just hoping for the future to be injury-free. I know the power shifts in skating constantly, and right now S/H are in a great spot. I hope they just hold on a little longer and don't beat themselves up over their silver medal. It's in insane accomplishment; Wenjing wasn't even walking about a year ago. I'll admit that I'm still disappointed, and I'm not in the mood to feel optimistic or assured that they'll still be successful in 4 years. However, I do know that as a fan, I could not be happier with their evolution, journey, and success during this quad, and I only wish for the same and more in the coming seasons.

Thank you for these heartfelt words!!! I cried...

I don´t know if this articles was posted here, but it is good http://www.insideskating.net/2018/02/14/features/wenjing-sui-and-cong-han-remaking-of-a-classic

Some excerpts :

“Lori (Nichol) suggested us some pieces of music when we were working with her in Canada during off-season”, Han recalled. “One day we were listening to her choices in the car; when the player started playing Hallelujah, it hit both of us immediately, and we felt like it was a gift to us from the God above. Then when it started playing Turandot, we also liked it so much that we decided that was it, we must skate to this music”.

The two had a bit of hesitation, though. Would their coach, the legend himself, welcome this idea? Would Shen and Zhao give their blessings?

“When I told coach Zhao about our decision, he didn’t comment whether it was a good idea or not. He simply said «if you two are going to skate to Turandot, you must skate a better Turandot than mine». I answered «alright» without any hesitation”, Han brought back the moment.

Then coach Shen bought me a book, a very thick one”, said Sui, “which is a novel adaptation of the story”.

Interestingly, unlike the opera, this book leaves an open ending, which initially made her feel “ridiculous”.

“When I finally finished reading the 500 pages book, I was extremely frustrated to read the ending line, which literally wrote: «What happened to the princess and prince afterwards? Who knows?». I was like: «What? I’ve read 500 pages, and you don’t tell me the ending?!», and I couldn’t understand what kind of a book it was. But then, I started to think the intention was exactly to ask you to imagine, to tell your own version of ending”.

“Both of them were trying to hypnotize us every day”, Han revealed. “They kept telling me: «you’re a prince and you love her»”.

This method certainly worked, as the young pair’s chemistry on ice was so good that people started to wonder if they were really in love.

“No, absolutely not”, Sui rejected the idea, as usual. “But it’s great that you feel it that way, because that’s exactly what we want to show”.

“So, every time I skate, I try to replace his head in my mind with the image of handsome actors that I like”, Sui smirked
.

I am really proud of S/H getting the silver at their first OG, with all the injuries it feels like a miracle that they could skate here at all. This will definitely get them motivated for the next quad, just praying that they will stay healthy.

Poor Wenjing!:sad4: You could see her emotions building up when the scores were announced and she wanted to cry. Dont worry my Empress, this will only make the gold in 2022 more spectacular with the home crowd living through your every move. Also what is it with the Korean crowd. Do they not know how to clap. Have some respect for the skaters and clap for not just becuase you want to

I am beginning to respect the idea of North Korea to send their own special cheerleaders to support its athletes :ohwell:

From this video

Cong: I am sorry, we lost the gold medal dream.
Wenjing: wait, no , we didn’t lose our dream, we just lost the gold medal. We still have the dream, 2022 Beijing, let’s go!

Ugh. I thought they needed higher PCS in the short because of how close they were to T/M in PCS. 0.44 more in PCS in the SP wouldn't be unwarranted, would it be? But it would have clinched the gold. I don't care that they made mistakes. They were the only pair I wanted to watch more than once. They just have something that no one else, besides Vanessa and Morgan maybe, does. But no. Now all I need is for Sui/Han to get their deserved gold on home ice in four years. It's four years too late but it'll be better than nothing. I'm heartbroken that Sui was crying. It's not all your fault girl! (if Han hadn't singled...) Plus, she was coming back from injury and did so well in spite of it!!

PCS lowered in SP + shady levels on their lift. Han's singling and Sui's step out wouldn't have mattered!

I was so proud of Sui and Han! Silver medal in your first Olympics is so great! Yes, they made mistakes, but given the seriousness of the injuries, what they've done has been incredible. I have no doubt that they will continue to improve and will win the OGM in 2022....and 2026!

Also what is it with the Korean crowd. Do they not know how to clap. Have some respect for the skaters and clap for not just becuase you want to

I think a lot of the crowd's "rudeness" is from the tendency of the "obnoxious masses" that show up at major sports events and don't know or care about the etiquette of these events. There were a lot of complaints about how some of the Brazilians acted with booing and cheering mistakes of non-Brazilians during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

If you think this is bad, wait until the World Cup this summer in Russia. You will probably see and hear some unbelievable stuff from the crowd - and most of the culprits will be "every four years" watchers of footie that will see this about nations about not about sport.

Congratulations to Wenjing and Cong for their Olympic Silver medal, so young and at their first Olympics! So young and yet have shown so much courage and grit to triumph over adversities few can surmount.

The other medalists too have overridden adversities in their long journeys to yesterday's Olympic glory and they too are very deserving with their courage and grit on top of talents and skills. They finally achieved their dreams at the last Olympics and at the end of their competitive careers. Olympic ice is the slipperiest of all and winning the Gold medal is a feat hard to fathom, only when all stars are aligned just right. With Wenjing's injury and pain, they did tremendously well, beyond what anybody could demand of them and at the end they lost the gold by less than half a point. Let's not be heart broken but celebrate their incredible achievement and remember how glorious an OSM really is.

The Pyeongchang Pairs OGM are deserving and I congratulate them. But the journey is still early for the coolest Pair of Sui/Han and they own the future, as amazing as they have already accomplished. As reminded by Wenjing, they still have their OGM dream.

They're the best pair in the world... And I don't see that changing.

In some ways I'm glad that they didn't get gold (in an appropriately non-cruel way :P That wasn't their best!). I think the world hasn't seen the best of them yet. And Beijing is their opportunity to do that. If they'd retired after this, something would have ended abruptly.

(Though of course if they choose to retire to take care of themselves, that's something we should be supportive about.)
