Javier Fernandez

A hero, that's what Javier is, and not just to Yuzuru to whose blazing brilliance Javier was able to hold up his own light. I admire Javier for his courage and perserverance in pursuing his figure skating dream despite not coming from a traditional figure skating country, leaving his family and Spain at 17; fighting through disappointing results such as in his first Worlds and first Olympics to be what he is now: a double World champion and Olympic medalist. Then there is his innate kindness and supportive nature. I recall reading not just Yuzuru but Gabby Daleman also relies on him in this regard. Maybe this is because, as David Wilson once said of him, Javier comes from love--the great love his parents and sister have for him, which he in turn gives to others (and to his cat Effie which has grown so big and fat as I saw in a Tumblr pic). He shows that nice guys don't always finish last and can be champions. As he winds down his competitive career, I want to say to him Gracias Javier for being both an extraordinary skater and an even better human being.

There's no need to translate the whole thing, formal speeches and beautiful words and no financial commitments, you know... but I can make a few comments:

- Javi thanks the PM for receiving them in his house. As in many other languages, in Spanish we have two different ways to say "you" when talking to someone, we use "tú" for informal situations and "usted" for more formal ones and all the grammar adapts accordingly. Well, Javi, deffinitively, didn't get that memo :laugh:
- Regino, a bit more formal, great too.
- Mariano Rajoy. He is not my favourite person (not the place to elaborate) and I especially hate when he jokingly brags about anything... This time, I'll let it slide, only because I brag about them too. He tells a story about a meeting at the EU Council with the rest of the EU PM: in a recess, German and Dutch PMs began to talk about how many medals they had up to that day and Mr Rajoy entered the conversation saying: we are still new in this (Winter Olympics) but in four years, in Pekin, you will come to me to present your respects... (I don't know what to do, laugh or cry...)
- On a side note, at the beginning of the meeting, great to see Sara stealing the show, as usual...:laugh: Good for her!

PS. Thank God, something to laugh about... I was beginning to cry too with your posts today :cry: I love them.
 
I suppose the PM has met Javi already for many times? So many competitions where he has placed high, LOL... Good, that he made the reception, as there has been such a really busy schedule for Javi and long flights, LOL.

Oh my, I just love Hanyu´s words, they came straight from the heart. It is so great that training partners get along so well, they all are such nice guys and Orser is a wonderful guy creating the atmosphere around the rink. One can be a hard competitor at a competition and still be a really nice guy... If Javi retires as it looks likely now, I wonder who will Orser take?

I think his current students are quite a handful already :laugh: Javi might not be there anymore as a senior student, but Junhwan is coming up, and Stephen will most likely make his senior debut before the next Olympics (I think Brian said that taking Stephen to the Olympics was going to be his last goal as a coach?). Elizabet and Gabby are still there, not to mention Yuzuru.

Ok, thanks! I really liked the skating style of Junhwan at the Olympics, Stephen is unknown to me, must check out. Anyway, great that Yuzuru is there as the "older" senior skater for the young ones as an example, so to speak.

No wonder at all after his horribly busy schedule... Maybe he got it from the Olympic village as many skaters have been sick, I believe.
 
Apparently Javi has reached the stage of fame where he can't go to the doctor without being asked for a photo that ends up on social media. He can't feel too great if he went to the doctor. :con3: Hope he gets better soon!


And to see confirmation of just how much Javi has the makings of a wonderful coach, see this recent interview with Gabby Daleman before the ladies event in PC, who had this to say about Javi and last year's Worlds:

"I went into that worlds so confident, even when I wasn’t feeling well, my coaching team was confident, my parents and friends were confident, my training-mate Javier Fernandez was confident in me and believed in me more than I did. Before my long program, I remember him sitting there with me for two hours while I did my hair and makeup, watching me and talking to me, and just having that comfort person there really helped me. Honestly, yes it’s my job to do it, but it was my coaching team, and my friends and my teammates who really helped me get where I was at worlds this year."

That might be due to the illness going around to the Olympic Village for weeks, or due to his schedule (plus the fact that he did SKorea-Spain-SKorea-Spain in very short time) or both. No matter, I hope he takes time to rest well, he earned it.:bed:

I remember that, she said that Javi believed she could become a world medalist (and he was right). I also think he could make a good coach. So no matter what he chose to do post-competition, I hope he'll consider coaching at some point (if he didn't already).
 
Also, how great of Javi that he was there for Gabby right after finishing off the podium in Helsinki! He must have still been bitterly disappointed. I think Yuzu may have phrased it right: Javi is almost too kind for competition. Which is why I guess it's also easy to underestimate how driven he must be at the same time, to achieve everything he has.

It will be heartbreaking to watch the figure skating world just move on, and not having Javi's engaging, kind and generous personality illuminate everything around him. :sad46:

:sad4: Yes, so sad Javi will be missed so much!!! On the other hand I have already experienced the same with so many skaters starting from John Curry... In those days and also long afterwards after a skater left the eligible career, he became unseen on our tv. Now for so many years we have had the possibility to follow their further careers (shows, etc.) via internet... Long live internet!!!
 
The first confirmed date for Javi's RevolutiON Ice tour has been revealed! November 17th in Malaga! :hap10:

Edit: the Palacio de Deportes is confirmed as the venue in this article.

Edit 2: and while he's in Malaga, of course the "King of skating" has to visit the football team, to get a tour of the stadium, a custom jersey and all! :biggrin: (I'm loving the superlatives the Spanish sports world and the media has started to use about Javi!)
