Yes he is very hard on himself but I guess he’s aiming to turned the frustation into bettering himself. Overall, after skate canada he did have a couple of rough competition compare to last year. He manage to placed better I think because his program has a lot more content that last season’s program so I can understand if he isn’t satisfied no matter what the reasons are. And I admire that as I rarely see such character in a 20 yo.

Not sure if this has been posted but here’s an interview with TAT and she praised Shoma a couple times although she is being harsh to russian’s skater as well.

Anyway, she never bites her tongue - when she has something negative to say, she says it, and when she has positives - man, she lays it on thick! Shoma totally deserves the praise. It was clearly obvious to everyone how hard he fought through that LP.

As a newbie to this FF, I have a question about a certain Italian analyst on Eurosport. I have read English translations of podcasts that he thinks Shoma has poor skating skills. The only reason that I can find that he feels this way is that he skates 2 footed too often. Some of his comments about Shoma have made me question if we are watching the same skater.

that analyst is clearly partisan. His twitter feed doesn't really look like a pro analyst feed either but like a fan fair for a certain skater so.
Even Doug Haw, who is BFF with Brian Orser said Shoma had "the best knees" and was "the best skater after Patrick Chan". You can time two foot skating as much as you want in a program, that doesn't constitute skating skills.

I think anyone would be able to notice that Shoma has that deep knee-bend - that’s the first thing that comes to mind for me about his skating.

One foot skating is merely one of the criteria for judging skating skills. Shoma may not excel in this particular area but he is excellent in the other four areas so it would be inaccurate to label his SS as "poor." His SS definitely outclassed the rest of the field at Worlds.

Yeah idk, i haven't checked his material in ages because i find him untrustworthy so i don't know what he said or is saying about Shoma. But if he is saying that, in my opinion it's inaccurate. I also think a pro commentator saying someone is "the end of skating" is just I do think the translations on tumblr are also motivated though. With some cutting and editing and translating only some parts to prove a point etc.

Ah yes the italian technical podcast has been used to discredit Shoma a lot. My opinion is they have their own bias towards certain skaters. It’s like what other poster said there’s loads of other experts that were amazed by Shoma’s skating. Those with household names never doubt his skating skills.

Also this is old news anyway, now there’s another skater getting over 90s PC. Are the italians also going to call him the death of figure skating? I really doubt it.

okay. I may not be a professional analyst of skating, but after watching skating for several years, I think that I can tell the difference between good and poor skating skills. So his comments seemed so unreal.

Yeah the russians are very blunt about everything. The interview was about olympic i think. There’s also a tweet that said after Shoma FS finished, Tat remarks was something along ‘I’m very glad that he will stay in figure skating like a flagship’ not even sure what that means LOL

I am in Japan now for a short trip...this afternoon i went to a second hand book store by chance and found a magazine (kateigaho) with shoma's interview Kinda unexpected to find that, sadly I cannot buy it cox it is too damn heavy (budget travel this time only 7kg luggage..) still good to see handsome shoma with hakama (Japanese formal wear) and some interview.
According to the description in the interview, the family crest of Uno is eagle's feather* (the crest looks like two feathers imo)

Very interesting because Yuzu's surname contains the kanji for feather. I also see the Oda crest at the bottom of the page (third down, third from left) which brings us full circle since Nobunaga Oda was known for falconry

I think Shoma has very strong skating skill, which is exemplify by ease of turns/movement, speed, and smoothness of his skating. My sister only watches figure skating during the Olympics, and she felt Shoma and Patrick were the best in that top 6.

It is a good thing he went to hotel and did not stay in Olympic Village at that time where a lot of skaters like Nathan and Bruno Massot got the flu and/or noravirus that was going around.

The hotel official stated that shoma and his mom didnt come to the hotel because of the virus. Shoma just wanted to stay with his mom. Nathan also spent the last week of the olympics in seoul with his family so its means they're allowed to leave the olympic village.

In addition to having the best knees, Shoma also has the best control over his movements. Every part of his body is perfectly positioned when he's skating. Even amongst the top men, he's unmatched in this particular area.

Shoma's feet are amazing. I don't really care what anyone says . And he has some of my favorite footwork sequences, especially Loco Loco.

I've mentioned it before but after the team event he was on my train from Gangneung to Seoul, and I also noticed he was wearing a mask, which is not out of the ordinary for asians, but I wouldn't doubt that he was definitely trying to take care of his health while there. I bet he was resting well too. I was pretty paranoid for myself (it would suck to fly halfway around the world for this special experience just to get miserably sick). I was sleeping pretty well, purelling my hands, and regularly took immune system boosters. I was lucky I didn't get sick. Then I was thinking about the poor skaters wondering what they could actually take that would be allowed.

That's interesting - I missed that Tat comment. I guess a flagship is the "leader" of a fleet ??? If Yuzuru did retire, which I don't think he will but if he did, then Shoma would surely be the Japanese flagship, and a fine one!

I think in that article, Tat also says that Kolyada skates like a girl! I'm stunned. Some of the Russian skating people, like Eteri and even Raf, are really something

YES! I like his carriage too! He controls every part of his body extremely well, arms, torso, legs and even his head, everything is so well-held that "flailing arms" just does not apply to him. His arms are never swinging nor "meaningless" which is one of the many things I like about him!
