Nathan Chen

Color me surprised! I really thought he would stay in California with Raf. Good for him though, that should be an incredible experience for him - regardless of what it means for his skating.

Yale is 80 miles from the Ice House in New Jersey ... not super close ?

It has on campus rink that looks pretty nice.http://www.yalebulldogs.com/information/facilities/ingalls_rink/index

That's also one of the reasons I think raf and other coaches can travel and train him.

"DAVID S. INGALLS RINK (a.k.a. The Whale)
If there’s one thing that you find in traveling around college hockey it is that no two rinks are alike. Each arena, whether old or new, large or small, urban or rural, has its own distinctive attributes. But there may be no rink in all of college hockey as distinctive as Yale’s own David S. Ingalls Rink. In fact, the New York Times recently named it the rink with the "Best Design" across all of America."

I could see a coach (not a super high-profile one, but someone who Raf knows and could advise) relocating to work with Nathan, to be honest - but I don't know who it would be.

Raf has students regularly sent to him but afaik he doesn't make house calls. The only coaches who would travel would be the ones who don't have regular students and freelance. Someone like Patrick, or choreographers like Shae.

The big advantage with Yale is the location of their rink--smack dab in the middle of campus. Even the Harvard rink is a bit off campus.

That's good to know. What about Stanford?

No idea? But no ice rink at Stanford - unless we count Winter Lodge in Palo Alto which is outdoors, not open year round, and quite tiny. I've skated there before and I would think that quads at such a small rink would not be recommended lol.

And Yale is somewhat close to Hackensack so he can go there if he needs to. He's also friends with Brendan Kerry, who trains there according to his ISU profile.

Didn’t Brendan Kerry relocate to Moscow to be with Morozov?

Nathan's activity on Insta(last couple of months) indicated he really lean towards east coast not just the most recent bulldog like.

On campus rink is really convenient, it usually will be closed during hockey off season (for renovation etc. but I think the real reason is actually not many people is going to use it during summer break), but I am sure it could make extra arrangement to cater to Nathan's figure skating training. On campus ice rink can provide lots of spare time. their ice time is actually not packed like commercial ice rinks, this means that Nathan may have a ice rink of his own to practice.

about traveling to other rinks to train,
remember even before 2018 worlds, we have spotted Nathan go to quite a few rinks in CA that is not lakewood to train, one of which requires a hour to drive in crazy LA traffic. And Nathan was spotted training by himself without Raf in the other rinks. Nathan also trained by himself for 2 days during OG (with Team's including Raf permission). Traveling hours on the road for figure skating training is a norm for Nathan and Vincent since childhood. they spent hours and hours (more than 6 hours/day for Vincent). it must be nice to have an on campus rink to train.

Coaching, I am glad that this could be an opportunity for Nathan to have new perspectives in figure skating, people and life. Many new possible arrangements can be made, and Nathan can broaden his horizon in many ways. If Nathan will focus more on GOE, SS, TR, choreo, components that is really a great thing I believe every fans would like to see. Many great people(in figure skating community) are located in east coast (New England) and it is closer to the figure skating clusters of Canada as well.

I would not worry about Nathan if he has to train by himself (but I think he will have someone to monitor him). For example, worry about him over-train himself, he has grown as showed in his growth over OG, I have confidence in him and trust him. Also I think Nathan's current PT trainer can easily relocate to New Haven if needed.

EDIT: choose Yale for undergrad, may due to speciall offer Yale give to Nathan. Nathan can also go for the medical graduate school in Harvard or Stanford or whereever he wants if Harvard prefers to recruit from other undergrads than his own, choose Yale would be a great advantage too.

I think so to, Nathan's current PT trainer may very likely from colorado springs, he may hired him there when he was doing his rehap. And he is accompany Nathan to comps ever since.

Plushenko video from the SOI finale. Good number of USA flags considering Nathan is the only American.

I read he was super popular at the shows and has a great presence. Tons of screaming and cheers, the girls went crazy and Japanese fans really loved Nemesis. They were thankful he came to Japan straight from Milan, though of course wish he would stay but knew he had to go home. Also a few mentioned they hadn't been to ice show in a while and his appearance really excited them and they were so happy to see him. Seems like he made a great impression. I know he's coming back in June, but I can imagine he'll be invited again.

what is this... Yale 22 GroupMe? same timing as liking the bulldog pix, or before?

It's like a messenger program. The picture came out yesterday and he mentioned he was in Japan.

and it seems the general reaction from fans is being happy and positive and then going...what...how is this going to work...? I'm pretty curious and a bit anxious honestly.

And yyyyskate thank you! Reading your thoughts really put me at ease. The whole thing makes more sense now. I agree that of any seasons this is the season he could actually take a bit of a break. I also imagine people around him will do a lot to make this work for him.

So happy for Nathan, he can finally enjoy school in realtime, make some friends and simply experience college life! Woohoo
I’m sure he will adjust his credits as he sees fit with his career development and he already made comments on how he plan on balancing the two. Maybe Patrick can go hangout with him and trained together :) Yale is represented by IMG per last sport event I attended, they should help with the logistics of things.

It’s great to see the Japanese audience so smitten by him, had to use translation tool but so worth it to see how they responded. Now just hope he can get some well deserved rest.
