I don't know about California Asian kids, but I do know for lots of Asian Parents, HPYSM would be the first choice schools if 1) their kids can get in 2) they can afford the tuition.
Again, Johns Hopkins medical school and Johns Hopkins undergrad study are two different things. In terms of prestige, HPYSM undergrad is way better. I am only answering you posts his siblings go to California schools, which is not entirely true.
