Nathan Chen

reedit discussion is a nice read. thanks for provide the link. I actually also had the thought like one of the reedit comment that maybe Nathan can design skates (and help sis Karen) if he is interested in biomechanics. JK. Anyway, Nathan's personal experience dealing with injuries throughout his life perhaps is his best preparation for a doctor.
Glad to hear the nice words about Nathan's brother I assume it is Tony. Tony is very influential in Nathan's life including his appreciation of his figure skating career, the understanding that figure skating is now and he can do doctor at any time later in his life.
I also had the gutting feeling why Nathan chose Yale is maybe to some extend due to the small liber art college vibe (Nathan is quite artsy and likes indie music) and specially the residential college(like Harry Porter) appeal. Nathan likes HP so much.

Is this from a FB group - did one of the members post that?

In any case, this is so exciting! I think Nathan knows what he is doing and I'm sure Yale will be happy to work around his needs as a professional athlete so that he has everything it takes to be #1

the original groupme pic showed up on twitter, I think from fb but not sure. Lots of people excited about him going there.

EDIT: this photo is taken while Nathan is doing "falling leaf jump" during his nemesis stsq

@oatmella
do you know what school of ballet Nathan learned (Ballet West's Ballet school)

I think American ballet sometimes teach Balanchine method.

Some ballet fans see Nathan's special musicality and physical strength, think that he is suitable and capable of Balanchine ballet on ice (its essence, flavor and aesthetics ).

One thing I do notice is Nathan's hands and fingers gesture, the shape and freedom is absolutely more lean toward Balanchine Ballet.

EDIT: talking about Balanchine hand

OMG, I just saw Nathan do a rippon 2A :eeking:(actually a beautiful ballet 5th arm position), he really has done it all!!:eeking:

where is this from? :D

it is from this ice show. A house warming show for the world ice arena opening in HangZhou China at 2011, choreoed by David Liu. Nathan is a main cast.
the ballet 5th arm position 1A is here
https://youtu.be/CJ61kx-CXKI?t=144
but watch the whole thing, it is an amazing show, you rarely see ice shows like this anymore.
especially David Liu's solo piece in this show, how he incorporate dance into figure skating. truly amazing!!! start around 22:50'

this ice show reminds me of ATS LA also at 2011. Yuna and Michelle's duet "Hero"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7POGxxrSEA one of the earliest figure skating videos that inspired me, I remember watching it over and over at the time ....

Maybe Nathan can do an ice show with Michelle in the future. it is totally possible (have you seen Michelle's recent skating clips on insta), that will surly help the popularity of figure skating in US maybe worldwide too. Nathan's agent make this happen please. I somehow, felt my figure skating fandom comes to a full circle.

@oatmella thanks for you elaboration about ballet schools, speaking of "claw like hands" Nathan's hands in peter and wolf was literally "claw like"

edit: Nathan's hands/fingers like in this photo https://www.japantimes.co.jp/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/sp-skate-a-20180324-870x580.jpg has become quite notable, distinguished as his special trait among fans:biggrin:

figure skating Speed is quite a different concept from dance speed, dance speed perhaps is about the quickness of moves and the over-all tempo of the dance, I think Nathan can handle quick moves really well, that is perhaps the quality the other ballet fan saw in Nathan's skating.
whereas FS speed is associated with SS, edges, in dance, this is no such concept of edges. Nathan's lack of speed (in his more recent quads filled programs) are mostly in these area.

The show is wonderful! Thanks for sharing! Baby Nathan is too adorable and I can see he really enjoyed it. David Liu used to work as codirector at Ice Theater of New York, hope they can invite Nathan to perform here one day.

Also read about Nathan working with Marina in this old article. I love how Nathan knows exactly what he wants and put his creativity into it.

For his short program, the skater hopes to capitalize on the 10 years of ballet training he received as a youngster growing up in Salt Lake City.
"(Last) season, I didn't get the program component scores I wanted," Chen said. "Something Rafael brought up to me was (working with) Marina Zoueva, so I got to work with her and got my short program done to Le Corsaire. I have a pretty strong background in classical ballet, so it's somewhat in my genre."
Zoueva, whose time with Chen included watching videos of Rudolf Nureyev performing Le Corsaire, sang the teen's praises.
"It is absolutely amazing how he responds to any advice, immediately and cleanly," Zoueva said. "He is open to everything. You give him a movement and, wow, how beautiful he emphasizes everything. He is a very serious worker."
Chen also showed a free skate choreographed by one of his coaches, Nadia Kanaeva, to Alexander Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances" from Prince Igor.
"It's very powerful music, and I wanted something that was powerful and in my style, but different in a way," Chen said. "I've just come back from an injury, so I didn't want something brand new to me that would take a long time to get comfortable with."

Thanks for the Balanchine ballet video, interesting to know square dance had an influence.

Maybe the sales is better due to an Olympic year but still have some available even for the 4/7.

Add on: thanks mamamiia for posting this, read it awhile back and i was also delighted to see his input in his program which is one big reason I feel Nathan is truly one of a kind.

I also love Wakababy' realness in her performance, and on and off ice. She also is one skater who truly is passionate about all aspects of figure skating. She is raw, organic and so real. Also wear her emotions on her sleeves, which reminds Kurt Browning of Michelle Kwan.
