Nathan Chen

reedit discussion is a nice read. thanks for provide the link. I actually also had the thought like one of the reedit comment that maybe Nathan can design skates (and help sis Karen) if he is interested in biomechanics. JK. Anyway, Nathan's personal experience dealing with injuries throughout his life perhaps is his best preparation for a doctor.
Glad to hear the nice words about Nathan's brother I assume it is Tony. Tony is very influential in Nathan's life including his appreciation of his figure skating career, the understanding that figure skating is now and he can do doctor at any time later in his life.
I also had the gutting feeling why Nathan chose Yale is maybe to some extend due to the small liber art college vibe (Nathan is quite artsy and likes indie music) and specially the residential college(like Harry Porter) appeal. Nathan likes HP so much.

Can you tell me more about Tony's influence, etc? Wasn't Tony the brother who said something like 'what he put us through...' during the Today show 2/17 interview? If that was Tony, he had every right to say that, I'm not criticizing Tony. I'm sure Nathan's family went through depths of misery because they love him and wanted to fix things for him. But it also made me worry that Nathan is going to be spending years trying to make it up to his family, not only for the lost chance to make more endorsement money, but because they had to suffer along with him from February 8 to February 16.

Sorry if I'm over-reacting--I'm sensitive to the topic of more burdens on Nathan's shoulders, I think he has enough. And if Tony's view is you can study any time, you should skate now-- then isn't that in conflict with Nathan's wish to attend Yale?

On a lighter note, if it is true that Nathan chose Yale for the gorgeous architecture, please join me in saying a little prayer that he'll get assigned to Branford (considered the most beautiful Gothic residential college), or at least one of the more typical colleges, instead of the atypical modern ones such as Morse and Stiles.

Oh wow thanks for the link, the shots are so gorgeous and love hearing the skates across the ice, 5-6 mins is quite short but bravo well done especially our handsome Nathan looking so smooth!

Thanks Yyyskate and Tahuu, This version of the video where Nathan hits the camera while skating is funnier because now we can see other things, like watching the cameraman fall (after nationals we only saw the IG where the cameraman told the incident, now we see it jojojojo :laugh2: ), the version of "Back to the Edge" with lyrics I loved, Nathan is living and feeling the music more than before

OMG! You post so fast that it's hard to keep up with everyone, but don't stop, continue :cool2:

I don't know which today show on 2/17 you are talking about, is it this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbuN0WcJASg
Tony did not show up in this video, but I did watched a short interview of the fam during that time. To me, they just sounded very proud and supportive to Nathan's FS redemption.
maybe it is some other interview you are referring to.

as an outsider, my impression of Nathan’s fam is a low-key but very loving, supportive and positive family.
like everyone else, family ofc will have huge influence on everyone’s development, it is inseparable. it is people’s upbringing.
I really don’t think that Nathan’s family ever thought much about pay-back for their devotion to his figure skating career. just like Vincent’s mom said in interview, she is just helping her child’s dream NEVER thought about pay-back.
maybe Nathan himself thought that he is in-debt to the family. However, any decision Nathan made based on that thought is also Nathan’s own judgement call.

As for Tony’s influence, the little info that I kr is that, Nathan decided to stay longer in FS (before OG mishap) is mostly due to his appreciation of fans’ love and his understanding that FS is now (both are gradual process for Nathan) Tony seems is very close to Nathan and influenced him in favor to a longer FS career.
I think all these decision making are all Nathan’s own idea. His decision may change like everybody else as he is experiencing this world more. Family like other stuff (people, things, etc.) that he encounter in his life will influence him. but ultimately, it is his own decision.

I don’t think it is Tony or fam forced or persuaded Nathan to do anything.

just some extra personal thought about Nathan’s roller-coaster OG, after his TE short misfortune, I think the nerves get to him. but I was conservatively confident at the time about his individual event, it is exactly because I knew that Nathan have a very supportive and large family there with him. that may help him to adjust his mentality. Unfortunately Nathan bombed again in the individual short. IMO, it is mostly due to Nathan put too much pressure on himself like he always do.
but I am glad Nathan learned so much from his OG experience, like Nathan said, he would not trade anything for his unique/precious OG experience.

Phil Hersh interviewed Nathan today and says Nathan still plans on competing but a lot of things have to be worked out, he said there will be a full article on Icenetwork later on today.

I know a lot has already been said about nathan attending Yale in fall but I have to say I find it very admirable that he wants to try and pursue two of his dreams - figure skating and attending an Ivy League. Of course whether or not he’s able to excel in both remains to be seen but he’s willing to give it a shot which I’m sure many won’t. He might end up failing but if his redemption after the Olympics sp is anything to go by I’m sure he will find a way to bounce back. He does have 4 years before the next Olympics to figure out the right balance after all.

In a interview of Nathan and Shoma, Nathan mentioned his brother games a lot, but never let him do it. I was wondering which brother he was mentioning. Seems to be Tony to me now. Good Job, Tony! The kid spent way too much time on his phone already:laugh:
