aww thanks for sharing but I've seen that before. I was hoping for some rare and previously unseen video of him speaking Mandarin. His accent sounds pretty good - maybe he's just shy (no surprise) about speaking?

I mean, does he really not know how to say 'Happy New Year' in Chinese? He must surely at least hear it a lot from his mom - unless she speaks to him in English.

My mom saw that before and she was like why doesn't he say his name as CHEN WEI - what's this WO DE MING ZI SHI NATHAN CHEN ... lol

a few things.
1, Nathan loves stuffed animals, ofc, he likes useful stuff like, T shirt, shampoo, lip balm, moisturizer, undies etc, he also mentioned note book (with written messages from fans) to his Japanese fan club before. but he surely love love stuffed animals throw at him at competitions, Poor Nathan even got less stuffed animal than V at Nationals.
2, that compilation is all the Chinese ever said by Nathan ever, there is another very short like 5 seconds msg to his Chinese fans but he said everything in English.
3, yeah it is kinda a shame that Nathan said his name in English, but he understands his Chinese name very well, but just never said it in any video,
4, I wanna type a sentence here in Chinese, please ignore me "微微一笑很倾城":luv17::

I actually remember reading that Nathan speaks Chinese with his mom. It was from someone who had been in the same arena/interacted with them & noted that Nathan spoke Chinese with his mom fairly fluently but maybe he’s not comfortable speaking it on camera much? Like maybe he feels it’s too rusty/not developed enough & might be too embarrassed. I know he said he understands it fine tho & I think can read it but not write? I could be wrong on that last part about reading/writing, memory is a bit fuzzy

He's probably like many children of immigrants who know lots of individual words but aren't comfortable stringing together sentences.

In askform, few years ago, he answered about this. He can understand chinese pretty much ( because his mom speak chinese at home ), but not fluent in all situation. And speaking, he can only speak very few basic chinese ( like hungry..)
He can’t write any chinese.

This one is fantastic too. I realized how much better this program was at the beginning of the season with the ballet shirt on. Really showcased his arm movements. It got lost with the Very Wang costume.

Sounds like his Chinese listening skills should be pretty good. Maybe just a bit shy/uncertain about speaking - which is quite normal.
Yeah, unlikely he would be able to read/write unless he went to Chinese school or something

I was having a debate with others about the Very Wang costume. That was why I was searching for the side by side video. Such a classic example of how a poor choice of costume can reduce your artistic effectiveness.

Maybe I'm the only one who didn't like his 'ballet shirt'/polyester with pit stains noncostume ?

I agree it was not really a costume but it still worked better than the jumpsuit. He needs a proper ballet shirt.
