Alina Zagitova

actually it was 5cm and alina said it has affected her jumps (in yesterdays korean interview)

I'm sure she'll be fine though :agree:

this is true, I read (google translate) more than 40+ korean articles of Alina and only one had a part of the interview were she said something like she grew 5 cm (before the olympics until now? not sure g.translate didn't help much) ... It is bringing her troubles when doing her jumps and that she and her coach Will work together to solve this problem. (g.translate kind of put the sentence in future)
I remember worrying about her while searching for more articles and I must have closed that one article by acciddent. (it was 1:30 am T_T) I went to sleep and totally forgot about it until reading your comment... I really hope she can be at her 100% again..

went to search for that interview but I couldn't find it :( only got these new photos (she looks very pretty)

Me too. I was amazed, but also thought all the stars in universe aligned for these two skates in Saint-Gervais and she rather won't be able to repeat it.
I doubted her until her free at Junior Worlds, when after Marin's phemomenal PB performance, she delivered big time and beat my fave. It was so impressive and heart-breaking at the same time. :sad21:
Also a powerful statement - since then, I knew she's legit contender for Olympic medal.

Wow. Kurt sure changed his tune in a year. At JW he LOVED her. Was soooo impressed with her jumping in the second half of the program. Wonder what changed? We're all allowed to change our minds but it kind of makes him look hypocritical.

She wasn't a threat to beat his favorite skater when she was a Junior

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought that Kurt Browning was usually very complimentary towards Alina. I thought the "bathroom break" comment was from another commentator but I could be wrong.

I'm fairly certain I saw a video of Alina's Olympic long program with Kurt commenting and he was very nice.

I just rewatched the CBC broadcast and he was fairly complimentary. He said that she's a skater with "virtually no weaknesses" and described her as having "technical wizardry."

:)

I think Alina and Katelyn have the best jumps in the ladies excluding (some jrs Trusova and Alena K).

Their jumps are big and explosive with Alena having good postured double hand tanos on most of her jumps.

I say Alena has the best jump because she does a clean 3 Lz 3 Lo. Who else does it like her? I can only think of the 2 other Eteri Jrs but they arent senior yet.

First Post

So I am new here. Before February, I knew virtually nothing about figure skating and had no interest in it. I was watching the team event with friends and something about Alina's performance really captivated me. I started reading up on her and her teammates and I have fallen down the rabbit hole.

So while I'm not very knowledgeable about figure skating, I did compete at a high level in a completely different sport and have had coaches similar to Eteri. And I have started obsessively watching all videos she's in and studying her reactions. A couple things stand out.

I do not think its a coincidence that Alina performed her best at competitions where Medvedeva also competed. But this isn't for the reasons most assume - its because Eteri's attention is directed almost exclusively on Zhenya. Eteri isn't above playing mindgames, having Alina show off her five triple jumps. This was intended to psych out the competition, I just don't think Eteria ever expected Alina to be THE competition. I think she assumed Alina was too inexperienced and would succumb to pressure in individual competition like Lipnitskaya. And she never thought much of her talent.

I believe Alina's performance issues at worlds were mental. She skated tense, she overthought things, and she got the yips. Can't remember the interview but she essentially admits that she didn't think about her skating at the olympics and wants to go back to that. I wouldn't be surprised if Eteri sabotaged her to a degree to prove she was right about Alina. I've seen other coaches act against their interests because of their own ego.

I'm also skeptical that Alina gained 5cm in two months. Its not impossible, but thats a lot to grow over a short amount of time and she doesn't look noticeably taller especially compared to Medvedeva. Eteri has an obsession with height (and weight but that's another post). Height is what "ruined" Eteri's figure skating potential. I would not be surprised if Eteri embellished her growth or even outright lied to mentally mess with Alina's confidence. Or even as a way to convince herself that Alina won't be able to maintain her career.

Sorry for the really long post. Its mostly just my personal speculation, but I've been needing to discuss my thoughts. I'm obsessed with the personalities, drama, and sheer athleticism of those at Sambo 70!

Well, without Eteri and co Alina wouldn't have gone far...much less winning the OGM. Even though MAYBE Evgenia is Eteri's sentimental favorite, there is such a thing as professional ethics and it's obvious that Eteri tries to apply it, otherwise she wouldn't have maximized Alina's strengths (like making her to learn 3lz3lo, or giving to her that layout).

I also thought, from that very moment, that Alina will be a real OGM contender. Almost everyone considered, even at the beginning of this season, that Evgenia has the OGM in her pocket, but as it was proved life is unpredictable, ice is slippery and judges love surprises.
The same for this year Worlds, which were seen as a done deal for Alina...

Agree! And Eteri benefits from Alina winning too - reputation and monetary; why wld she throw that away?

Also does Alina have turkish ancestry? She looks sort of Indo Euro

Isn't Alina Tatar? (I remember reading comments calling her "Tatar Princess")

from wiki: " The Tatars are a Turkic-speaking peoples living mainly in Russia and other Post-Soviet countries. Historically, the term "Tatars" was applied to a variety of Turco-Mongol semi-nomadic empires who controlled the vast region known as Tartary.
The largest group by far that the Russians have called "Tatars" are the Volga Tatars, native to the Volga region (Tatarstan and Bashkortostan), who for this reason are often also simply known as "Tatars", with their language known as the Tatar language.
There is a common belief that Russians and Tatars are closely intermingled, illustrated by the famous saying "scratch any Russian just a little and you will discover a Tatar underneath" and the fact that a number of noble families in Tsardom of Russia and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had Tatar origins; however, genetics show that majority of Russians form a cluster with Northern and Eastern Europeans (especially Belarusians, Ukrainians and Poles), and are relatively far from Tatar peoples.
Current day Tatars comprise a spectrum of physical appearance, ranging from Mongoloid to Caucasoid."

Aliya Mustafina and Alina Kabaeva fathers are Tatar.

In another forum someone said that this situation goes beyond sport competition, that user think Eteri is "playing a bigger game", like she and evgenia's family are preparing evgenia for bigger things. They know an ice skating career last a couple of years at best and with the right support (from influencial people, russian federation), good image (intellectual, sophisticated), popularity and also support from the general public ... she could reach in the future high places, maybe even be like Alina Kabaeva...
that user also said that it looks like for Eteri, Alina is just one of her dozens of talented students that is totally replaceable. Alina's family doesn't seem as wealthy as the family of other students. They are not even in the capital,Moscow, only her grandmother.

Personally, I don't not what to think. I just wish the best for Alina..

Personally, I think these are just scenarios and rumors that don't even deserve our attention.
And on a side note, I doubt that Evgenia would want to be as Alina Kabaeva:biggrin:. It seems to me that she has other aspirations.
