Nathan Chen

I am a Nathan fan and of course love new Nathan stuff

But this just doesn’t seem right - and OMG HE’S NOT TALL🙄

I think Nathan knows this stuff is gonna happen with people taking pics of him and talking about it on social media. It does feel a bit weird but at the same time they’re not posting anything that invades his privacy. It’s just teens being happy to meet him/take a pic with him and being excited. Nothing out of line was said or done. Hope it remains that way.

Figure skating itself is not like real popular in the US anymore but esp in Nathan’s demographic, he’ll be known and recognized and people will share and talk about him a lot bc he’s a famous athlete that’s their age. Teens get hyped about YouTube stars let alone Olympic athletes lol so I expect that it’ll happen quite a lot at first and hopefully they get used to him on the campus enough eventually that they leave him be.

It's understandable that some students are excited but I'm sure they will get mostly used to him by the end of the first semester.

I'm still curious as to how Yuki being a Yale alum factored into his decision, and why did he feel Yale was more willing to help him succeed than the other colleges.

In one of the other interviews, he mentioned that Yale was more willing to work with him to make the situation work compared to his other choices - his two safety schools in NorCal. Since his training mate knew about Yale before Worlds, I'm guessing that he received a likely letter from Yale, which usually goes out in early Feb. The Say Yes weekend was in late Feb. The school might have been in discussion with him for some time.

Probably helps him build easy connections in Yale through her. Like everything in life, it’s all about networking. I’m sure there is added benefits to your agent being an alum of your school and who knows, maybe Yale feels he can help them promote the school in some way in collab with their former alum (not that they necessarily need it because I mean it is Yale lol but all ivy leagues want good publicity).

Plus she might be able to provide him with some advice/info about the school given her prior experience.

Sarah Hughes said that she didn't get to use the rink on campus because it's occupied by the hockey team. I hope Nathan can get ice time on campus. It will make things more manageable.

^ I hope so too but based on what Ic3Rabbit and Nathan have said, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of rinks around the area for him to train in. But convenience wise, yea I hope he gets to use the school rink.

Was Sarah still skating competitively when she was at Yale?

I’m not familiar with her or her timeline

Anyways that was years ago and who knows - maybe the school is willing to accommodate Nathan on this

Yea she was for a bit but not for long, her sister Emily I think is the one that took on both Harvard and competitive skating for a few years.

I think Sarah was retired, but she was still doing shows. I do hope he has access to the campus rink at least part of time, especially when his schedule gets really hectic.

From the interview with the Hughes sisters, in general, the top schools are not very supportive of figure skaters compared to those who are on the school teams. I can understand why. But as a figure skating fan, I really hope more schools can be more supportive so young skaters can better balance education and skating. There seems to be a high concentration of academically orientated kids in FS.

Current world champion who wants to continue competing at the highest level of the sport vs. a skater who was doing shows

Absolutely no disrespect to Hughes (I am aware she won OGM) - but if that was the case, I don’t find their situations while at Yale that comparable

Perhaps the school would be more willing to accommodate Nathan for ice time ?

Perhaps Yuki could help with arranging for ice time? I don't know how much influence she would have, but IMG is pretty powerful.

Sarah retired but did SOI. She had to drive off campus for ice time to practice. Sarah was also accepted by Harvard. She chose Yale because Yale was more accommodating.

Emily went to Harvard. From her interview, it sounded like Harvard was really inflexible when she worked to balance Olympics and schooling.

IMG is Yale’s sporting event agent/sponsor and with Yuki as alumni, I feel this is possibly why Yale was inclined to work with his career development. I agree, it’s normal for students especially freshmen to be excited overall let alone seeing a star athlete, they will get used to it as the semester progresses.

Just my stand - I don’t see why students don’t have the right to not share pics, even with celebrities (most) they also decide what they wish to share with the public. I highly doubt Nathan is unaware the pics he took with others will be shared on social media platforms.

I certainly hope so. It made no sense otherwise. I can't believe Nathan moved across the country just for the East Coast IVY experience.

I didn't know that IMG handles Yale's sporting event. It starts to make more sense now :)
