Nathan Chen

Thank you, sheetz, for that Derrick Delmore article from 1997 Stanford Daily, the Yale Daily News article, the link to Champions rink. Thanks, everyone for all the links and posts.

couldn't be happier to find new IG story from Nathan when you are on lunch break.

and, skfan, finally Handsome Dan!!!!

He seemed to have really good time these three days, and sorry to read that that west coast for feeling "betrayed" lol

ETA: those who always only stress "pretty girls" while "ignoring" his love/likes for dogs, I seriously doubt you are Nathan fan as "claimed".;)

Can someone in New Haven please loan the kid a dog for cuddling like skfan suggested?

yes, finally--Handsome Dan!  Although I would have preferred to see Handsome Dan more cuddly with him, like that adorable chowchow from this year's Nationals, I understand that there are 1200 pre-frosh at Bulldog Days and Handsome Dan can't show Nathan any favoritism :)

Haha yes, I think he needs a dog ASAP! The love is too real 😁

Thank you, bonita and hhh, for endorsing my get-a-dog-to-adopt-Nathan-while-he's-in-New-Haven campaign.

I was doing a little remedial education on Yale's new residential colleges, and what do I see at 2 minutes and 22 seconds? ;)

Maybe there was some off video Handsome Dan cuddling

That chow chow from Nationals - shadowthechow - is so big now! And he has quite a lot of IG followers

oh I hope so! I'd be thrilled to see a photo of him shaking hands with Handsome Dan! and shadow deserves the world!

Nathan has to be thrilled to visit Yale! I remember my first time on campus thinking, "I'm going to be here in a few months!" It was so much fun.

Seeing him have fans already is a little off putting. But when classes start, they'll be to busy to even notice. It's cute though.

What's your favorite costume of Nathan's so far? For me, it's the black lace shirt from Le Corsaire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEDyIIpwslQ

For the next season I wish he could try something white, a simple elegant white blouse with one or two creative details would be wonderful.

The black costume from Le Corsaire is also my favorite. I love the program too. US National was the first time I saw Nathan and I was blown away.

Awww, I wonder who’s gonna replace Romain for Nathan when he moves to Yale? Both for himself and for the fans

sheetz said we'll all go into withdrawal (paraphrasing). How true! :(

I'm happy that you find McCarvel's icenetwork article uplifting. I assume that's the one you're referring to--where Nathan says he loves skating?

He has to--otherwise he wouldn't compromise his long dreamed of college experience, especially at a place like Yale, where you'll miss out on so much if you don't lounge around shooting the breeze with your classmates, if you'll have to miss interesting talks from world renowned scholars because you're training at your 30 minutes away by car rink for frugal champions ;)

I really hope he comes away with something precious and memorable, as bonita said, even if he only gets a year there.

The white ruffle is probably my favorite from his junior days. Him skating to Chopin in that costume was perfect

He had some excellent music choices last season - both new - which were well received by the judges and won him World gold. What do you think Nathan Chen will choose this season?

I know it's been a day since this question was asked, but I have some thoughts about this.

I think after watching Nathan perform on Stars on Ice, that Back From the Edge would make a great short program for next year, with some extra choreographic polish and rejiggering of elements. Kind of like how Patrick took his Rachmaninoff Elegy exhibition and turned it into a short program the next year. Since we've all gotten used to the image of him wearing a white shirt over a black t-shirt, he could have a similar costume, but instead of it being a white shirt, it could be a white/ivory suit jacket over a black/grey t-shirt. Something striking and simple, but classy.

As for his Free Skate, I went back to watch the Chopin Piano Concerto FS that everyone has been raving about. I was trying to figure out why I didn't really remember that program, when I've been following Nathan closely ever since 2010. Looking it up on youtube, that FS was only performed 3 times that year, because Nathan had an injury and had to withdraw from his second JGP. That year at Junior worlds, I probably wasn't able to enjoy the program because I was sad for Nathan skating with an injury, and falling on his quads, and having such a wobbly axel, that I missed out on what a great program it was. He performed with such tranquility and a slight fragility... I definitely would love to see something like that for his free skate. I vote for a Mozart or Chopin piano piece for his free skate this year.

I’ve never seen the white T MJ either, thanks! I’d love to see him do MJ again especially with his hotness and artistry he possesses now. The white ruffle was actually one of the first YT clips I saw him in 💗

Nathan's back is really stiff in his Chopin program, IDK, his upper body, back range of motion improved some later on. I assume that is due to injury. he is really heavily injured during his Chopin season.

and Nathan did an inna bauer here just without layback

He does that in every performance as well - JGP Zagreb, US Nationals, and Jr Worlds!

I think he used to have a stiffer upper back when he was younger, which got much better when he went to train with Marina IMO. But this performance from JGP Zagreb was the least stiff to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5h0sebFPGo&t=207s
Or maybe it was just the costume  Anyhow, that was definitely my favorite performance of Chopin - he looked the most free there.

I want him to have a new short program for selfish reason.
After multiple shows in Japan and 22 city tour in the US I think he will be a little tired of it too.
