as far as exploding hotness (yyyskate and shine and oatmella, i'm lookin right at you)...

I prefer the sexiness of jazz to that of tango. That Fragile version is dance-y enough for me--esp. the guitar solo part. But I'm sure if Nathan decided to Tango he'll either make me pull my hair out or deeply impress me :)
 
oh totally agree - jazz can be way more s**y than tango.

JAZZ for Nathan too ! And great nod to his SLC roots

The more I think about it the more I stand behind my Shape of You suggestion :laugh:

Also to me tango is not really about being sexy/sexual...I love it more for the charisma, the rhythm, intensity and passion that it brings out from the dancer :)

@skfan, I listened to Fragile - it definitely is very skatable - I can almost see Kurt Browning choreograph to this. But I don't know if I would call this jazz though. To me the solo guitar almost has a latin feel to it. When I think of jazz, I think of songs like Nemesis.

that's like saying Nathan skated to Chopin, so he need never consider another classical piece.

Nemesis doesn't cover the entire catalog of jazz though. To me Round Midnight is completely different. For one thing the lack of vocals provides more flexibility in choreography and also requires more from the skater, because the singer isn't doing half the job of conveying the meaning of the piece to the audience.

For me, the Latin feel that I like can be found in 'Fragile.' I prefer a more subtle and less in your face intensity, so there's that. You can be passionate skating to Rachmaninov. You don't need a Tango for that. You want passion? here's passion

and yes, yyyskate, I believe 19 year old Nathan can handle this song, even the relatively racy lyrics. He only needs to enter the mind of the vocalist for a few minutes--he can play that role with a little coaching.

yes, and single's Tango number could use some modern touch and liberty and outside the box of pair dancing but just to express the feelings that @Shine described above. And honestly, great Tango program from single discipline are more about the feelings and less about the partnering format or form.

also, SOI's boys' number is pretty jazzy too, and Nathan is really great in it.

I also think the two songs you suggested although really great music and perhaps a bit old for Nathan.

Nathan no matter what genre he will do, he always resemble something modern, fresh, new and young:biggrin:. that is how I felt about Nathan.
 
Tango is generally known for its intimacy - it used to be forbidden

I guess this doesn’t really apply to a solo tango in FS lol

But I think the origins of tango might be semi-important to Nathan ? - if Lori even used gardening as a reference to help him better understand Mao’s Last Dancer

Nemesis to me is more avant-garde/experimental pop than jazz

maybe you have some influence with Nathan's team, i surely don't , so i can only wait and see. what i particularly appreciate is the tour of music discovery i get to go on whenever we have discussions like this.

i couldn't have hated a piece of music as much as 'shape of you,' and nathan went and turned my impression of it upside down. i still don't love that music, but it's been partially rehabilitated by the pleasing visuals :)

as long as he's healthy enough and hopefully as engaged and in love with skating next season as before he took on the additional challenge of college, then i'm sure it'll be fun to discuss his programs next season and see how our impressions evolve.


what i'm trying to say is all the education in the world by the most articulate and knowledgeable posters can only do so much. i won't be sold on tango until nathan does something amazing with it.

and it makes me sad to hear people think certain music is not 'fresh' enough for nathan. i get what you mean, but i don't think nathan is so limited in what he can appreciate and be inspired by that he won't begin skating/dancing to that same music if it happens to be kolyada's choice next season and they're in the same practice group.

jazz is lullaby of birdland and round midnight. jesse cook's version of fragile is Latinized-pop to me :)

I know quite a few with ballet backgrounds who would not probably not get excited by something like tango - to me it is not particularly super fresh or exciting (though the potential hotness factor is off the charts). What is exciting is something different like the recent FRANKENSTEIN ballet that I recently watched.

I still don't think Nemesis is really jazz and he's already truly explored this genre?

I think Nemesis definitely has strong jazz/blues influence in the vocal, the freedom of the rhythm and the chords used. It may be considered pop but I don’t know if pop is one well defined genre and it draws influence from all sorts of genres anyway.

i also don't see nemesis as jazz. but i'm not deeply knowledgeable about music, so... i think nathan can stand to dip his toe into Latin via Fragile, can do vanilla Jazz (we aren't talking scatting, in Round Midnight). I particularly love classical music, but it's hard to cut it without jarring my ears.

oatmella, that shape of you slo-mo you keep referencing... oh g*d, it's inevitable... so just give me the link so that i don't accidentally stumble into it unprepared later, please


p.s. he would dance very well with a partner, i think, given sufficient coaching and rehearsal time, but his height is going to pose a challenge to a choreographer and both him and his partner. and if it's karen, i don't know if i want to see them tango. they're too brother-sister wholesome together. they can dance to something non-tango, i'd like to see that.

@skfan I just wanna emphasize, I have zero to minus influence on Nathan's music choice or team... I am just a fan like you.

Also, I like the 2 songs you suggested, I think Nathan may like it and skate to it maybe even add in his youthful twist:biggrin: Just in terms of marketing and general audience appeal, these 2 songs may sounded a bit old, but who knows, maybe Nathan can do wonders to them.

Also I am not suggesting Tango to Nathan, it just a possibility and sth I wish Nathan could try once in his career.

What I personally really want is something different, out of his comfort zone. like those flares that Dai, Stephane exhibited in their Tango programs.

there are some two in one (male and female embodied as one) concept and quality in this number, which I love.

EDIT: The duality in Figure skating performances is a really rare concept (maybe only very few programs that has this kinda concept) and I personally really love.
e.g. portray the bitter and the sweet, the prey and the predator.
