Nathan Chen

I think Nathan should be a legit podium contender in this OG. but Javi really had the best performace of his season.
if Nathan did satisfictory performances to his ability, but somehoe still did not win the gold, I think Nathan will still be contend and happy, although it will be a different OG experience than this roller coaster one.

I agree that Nathan had a very good (and realistic) chance for an individual medal at OG.

I’m only not sure if better/different preparation would have made up for his lack of experience. Maybe? ... but just wasn’t meant to be.

@heyheyhey the miscommunication between coach and skater is always a bilateral issue. as what communication is. Please do not always blame on Nathan. if he is a student who is not good at communication then a coach who cannot successfully handle that is not a good coach for Nathan or for this coaching relationship as well.

I agree - communication goes both ways so any issues there cannot only be blamed on Nathan.

I think a doable mental preparation is that make Nathan realize the US media hype is different and sperate from the real situation and make him believe in his own ability as long as he is doing what he is capable (even with possible nuggling injury), regardless result and he HAS a legit chance at podum based on observation and evaluation of his rivals and his TRUE ability in the OG, he will be great. make him believe he WILL be happy as long as he did his best even if the result is not a gold medal.

also realize the crucial importance of SP. should have tried all means to guarantee SP consistency.

You’re taking it as me “blaming” Nathan, no, I’m simply saying that it could factor into his Olympic experience. It’s not a blame, rather a possible explanation. Orser and his students were used as examples about how he managed their nerves but I just wanted to add that he didn’t just magically know they were going through nerves before he helped them. Coaches aren’t mind readers. His students made it clear to him that they were having problems and then it went from there.

Communication is a two way street yes, but it’s also always been clear that it was Nathan who didn’t talk or communicate much as that’s his general nature rather than his coach to him. That’s ok, he will grow into that and seems he’s already doing better in doing so but I don’t dismiss the idea that his naturally reserved nature may have played a factor. I was very similar during his age and I still sometimes have problems with that. I also don’t dismiss that it was a learning experience for Raf as well and hopefully he’s learned to be able to communicate better with Nathan and recognize ways to help his nerves as well.

Well ... I hope both have improved their communication with each other as they will be having a long distance relationship ! Which as we all know don’t always work out ;)

lurkz2 - thanks for the link to the article. And I was a little surprised to see that this is an article on Marin haha. Have only read the beginning, but Raf has some kind words to say about her - and I’m already intrigued and excited for her ‘very unique’ Lori program

Yes, by both of their accounts after Olympics/Worlds, their communication has improved and their relationship is very good right now. We will see how this next season goes.

just read the Japan Times article, did not read all the comments here yet
a few thought.
BTW Raf hater on this FF here lol

1. the thing about Adam, i think the reason why Adam is consistent in OG is because he lowered his difficulty, OG is his showbiz stage not like other athlete e.g.Nathan who are trying to challenge their most difficult programs to win a gold medal. still Adam is nervous and slow as a snail on OG ice. When at the event that really mattered and needed mental strength from Adam -- the Nationals, he bombed big time!

2. The way how Raf talk about Nathan and brag about himself is his usual way of talking (he is always the almighty one). No suprise here. I acctually voiced before (in my Chinese sm) that I wish Raf won't say something like "see, without me, he cannot do it" if Nathan's result is lackluster this season due to balancing college and skating. Now even before this happens, we already got similar comments from Raf in this article. I bet if somehow Nathan made it. he will have another set of comment. something like, we are like father and son, know each other so well, thus long distance worked etc. At this moments, sounded like Nathan seems is not his most beloved student like a couple of months ago. But again, NOT hating Raf anymore here, he is just being himself that I came to know about since started to stan Nathan.

3, it sounded (from Raf) as if, Nathan go to Yale is because, Yale is this prestigious school that accepted Nathan, that Nathan felt lucky that he even got accepted into Yale, that he has no other choice, so that he went for Yale with a beat of heart, thus did not evaluate things thouroughly. well, I kinda rolling my eyes about this here.

I found this post of yours quite cute haha

Raf changes his words in different contexts. remember in the article about the fight with Marina "Components is not true intelligence".
if anything this is one character that I have learned about Raf as a person.

ETA, now Marin Honda is his next star student, of course, he will emphasize her strength which is SS etc.
I don’t even know what “component is not true intelligence” means in English. It sounds like something that came straight from google translate and I can’t even begin to take it seriously much less analyze it until he explains what he really meant by that. And like you said, this is probabaly said in a different context. For all I know, he could be commenting on how components are very subjective and not always used the way they are meant to be used by the judges.

hmm interesting. Hoping Raf realizes that Marin’s SS cannot be diminished and even more important with the new rules.

Raf is a bit of a chameleon!

Maybe Nathan wearing the Mickey ears (thank you ABC/Disney!) have mellowed me out a bit against Raf - haha. Any time I feel stressed or like I’m going to freak out - I should just look at pics or cozy0505’s gifs of Nathan wearing light-up Mickey ears hat😍

Tbh I don’t know where the narrative that Raf doesn’t care about components or SS comes from. He wouldn’t have a team dedicated to that if he didn’t and many of his students have gotten high PCS under him.

Have you as a coach ever considered to find a way to make your student talk/communicate to you (during a not-short 6 years of coaching relationship) instead of conviniently blame your student only talk to family (which I don't even know if it is the truth)

these has been discussed in this FF before. getting repetitive. agree to disagree.

I do think it comes from a lot of presumptions on our part, though not entirely baseless: it's a combination of him being known foremost as a jump specialist, his (recent) skaters not being particularly known for their ss (as well as Nathan not having made as much improvement in ss as many would've liked/expected since his junior days when he was known particularly for his skilled blade work and for being a very well rounded skater), and Nathan's own devotion to quads in the recent years (which I get the feeling Raf is not 100% supportive of).

I think the verdict is still out though and I'm reserving judgement. I've cited Alexander Abt, his pupil of the longest time span, as an example of impressive skating skills as well as nice lines.

Uh, yes actually Raf has talked about trying to help Nathan communicate more. And he didn’t say Nathan was only talking to his family, just that his family influenced his decisions about his Olympic programs which Raf disagreed with. That’s not conveniently blaming if that’s actually what happened but to each their own.

Yes, agree to disagree. We will never agree on this, that much is obvious haha 😆

nothing about Raf or what he said or will say.

i am a little worried about Nathan. I have a gutting feeling like some of you here, maybe Nathan is indeed NOT hiding any card, maybe he has no cards...

It seems that the majority opinion on this forum (not just this FF) is that Raf doesn’t necessarily place a lot of importance on SS - and no one can really name a skater who has improved very noticeably in this area since moving to Raf. I have followed the discussions of Marin and Eunsoo moving to Raf - some of their fans did have concerns (though some were excited for these moves too) - but I can really only recall one poster who felt that SS could really improve with Raf - and it was more like, well no one has really gone to Raf before to specifically improve SS/spins ... so it could happen.

Too lazy to pull out all those Raf interviews (Russian or not) to make it like a Math proof here. You can acclaim what you acclaim.
