Yuna Kim

Thanks for sharing this, cooper! I think among fans this is really no surprised. The pressure would be even more profound and crushing for her, having to skate in front of her home country. So, so happy for her that she finally feels light hearted to skate again, without needing to face the pressure she'd been shouldering her entire career. Her skate to House of Woodcock may also be now read differently, as in fresh start, and may not be the last time to see her on ice again.

i am just so happy that we may see more of Yuna on ice in the future, now the burden is over. Really happy!!!

So I've been binge-watching Yuna's exhibition programs and totally forgot how emotionally moving even her junior exhibitions are, both of which she co-choreographed herself. And this girl was so extra at such a young age, performing a 3lutz, a 3Flip, and 2A for her 05-06 exhibition.

Shows you the potential of an injury-free Yuna. Pity her poor training conditions back home means tons of chronic injuries that I am amazed she had as long of a career as she had.

I think her Only Hope at WC is also very poignant and just perfectly apt. The mood lingered and haunted on my mind for many many months.

Saw this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvZex3Qf7QQ Wonder if Yuna ever saw this, pretty amazing choice for the dawning of her career. I think Yuna is wise and knows her situation really well.

This is the original actress it was composed for, I think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAl-EawVobY

I think it's more fitting to point this one out, because Glynis Johns, I think, was an actress first, and singer second, and it shows. Yuna also in that SP was an actress first.

But the song is open to interpretation. Johns' is bitter. Yuna's is reminiscent. Dench's is sad.

I LOVE her Only Hope. I was binge-listening to that song after I saw her skate to it. I was going through a tough time and watching her skate to that music always soothed me and lifted my mood.

"Someone Like You" was also amazing. I think she went through a breakup not long before she skated that so it was like really raw and emotional but so subtle that you wouldn't know if she's actually feeling it or not. She's such an angel. :ghug:

It’s interesting how we watch Yuna’s SiTC and then we go to quite different ways on which rendition/interpretation speaks to us best. Like, for me and I’ve mentioned it here earlier, it was Cleo Laine’s version of Send in the Clowns that resonated the most. It doesn’t have Dench’s hoarse dissonance or John’s anger, but her voice has enough smoothness and her lines were sung with such patience, both that hauntingly complement Yuna’s own interpretation. I also love how listening to different interpretations enhance my overall impression of Yuna’s own version.

As for her exhibition, her jumps were so smooth on both that and Ben, and it also shows how lyrical she was at even a young age. I remember back in 2007-08 when the dominant discussion was whether she would last until 2010 (wasn’t a fan then, didn’t follow her journey,so really didn’t “care” that much about her longevity) because of how chronic and massive her injuries are. And now, at 27, to still watch her skate is “truly a gift.”

I've created a video, like a jump compilation jump video(but only WC and Oly, maybe one day when I have plenty of time on my hands I'll do one with ALL the jumps I can find).
Anyway, while editing the video I noticed some things. (pls, correct me if I'm wrong)
Like, Yuna had some hard falls on the 3Lz! Which is considered her best jump(generally).
She only added her "trademark" 3Lz+3T around 2010 (she had a good 3Lz+2T+2Lo combo before that).
2011 was such an awkward season for Yuna! A step out on 3Lz(I think it was supposed to be a combo) on the SP, then a 3F+2T(?) which was actually a pretty combo.
Then in the FS a 3S+1T, then she singles a 3F... Her only competition and such an unfortunate one. But still, she did great considering. And except for the jumps everything was good.
Yuna almost did not have any Level 4 stepsq(I had to look at protocols to put the GOE for the jumps on my video). I can't even remember one right now... :scratch2: But I know there is at least one! I think...?
Something else I coud not help but notice is how crazy GOE seems nowadays compared to a decade ago or even less. But then again, OMG, it's been a decade!!! Can you believe it??!! It's been a decade since Yuna's Lark Ascending for instance. :eeking:
Oh, I've also found my favorite Yuna 2A! The one from 2008 WC FS at the end of the program, so beautiful and right with the music!

PS.: Only 5 days to go for ATS!!!!!!!!

I would have actually wanted it more if Yuna's trademark is her 3F-3T combo rather than her 3Lz-3T; she executed that combo the best. It's just that for some awful (still nonsensical) reason, she gets ! on the Flip and had to switch.

Yuna's step sequences were generally not technically difficult until later on, but they are choreographically better. They were mostly choreographed to be harmonious with the highs and lows of the music, and also she incorporates different variations of movements on her upper body. So it's actually difficult to overlay another music with them, or even to just slightly tweak the music off sync (even with her Die Fledermaus!)

Level 4 in KotV, Les Mis, and Adios Nonino.

I know SiTC was also Level 4, she just missed a step in the Olympics. But not in other competitions IIRC.

Agreed!
And I guess her most consistent jump was the 2A, which I guess its normal right? Skaters don’t usually have trouble with landind doubles. But Yuna’s 2A was really great! And she usually had great transitions with that jump.

The only step sequence I don’t like is in Miss Saigon... Die Fledermaus stepsq was also not great imo, but Miss Saigon was just very bland, I don’t like it at all.
The one I like the most is Adios Nonino’s of course! That Lvl 3 was truly a crime.
I also love Kiss of the Vampire stepsq! It was so well choreographed! And perfectly executed.

Need to take a poll, do you guys think Yuna will do any triples in ATS? I'm willing to bet good money that she didn't lose all her triples in 4 years, but many people probably want to argue otherwise.
