Russian coaches actually get paid for results.
It is a custom for the skaters to share their prize money with coaches, on top of the salary. Also, quite surely, government gives better funding to coaches with top students.
So basically, government pays them all some salary. Then, the top ones also get extra funding from fed and part of prize money from skater.

I haven't denied they get a bonus for a student's results. But they still get paid whether their students show results or not.

RusFed just hasn't enough money and they have to dismiss a few training groups in regions to compensate Orser's payments. But there could be specific funding from Ministry of Sport or sponsors to pay for Medvedeva. I doubt that other athletes will be allowed to go overseas because it could kill Russian coaching system. And tbh Fed is not interested to pay a lot of money for old athlete when there are decent Russian coaches and young, cheap, effective skaters. Zhenya is a rare exception. I think, maybe someone in Ministry wants to reward her for Lausanne.

How would it kill the Russian coaching system? Every single athlete would up and leave?

Its not Zhenyas fault. Its just the sometimes painful online world we live in.

I've read coaches get ~20% of skaters prizes, but 70?

You are talking about different things.
This is how i understand it(can be wrong).
Prize money is one thing, and it seems that coaches are getting 20-30% of that money(so if skater has won a tournament with 10000$ prize and they agreed with coach to pay 20% to them - skater will get 8000$ and coach will get 2000$).
The other thing is government bonus(es) for wins. Let's say, Alina won Olympics and got 4 million rubles for that from government. That means that government also pays 2 millions to the coach(if rate is 50%), but not from the skater's money. That's an additional money from government. So in this example Alina gets 4 millions, and Eteri gets 2 millions. Thats said, having two olympic medalists, Eteri most likely has got more money in total than any of actual medalists(or equal to what skaters have got if rate is 50%).

Yeah i feel sorry for diana bots are trolling her accounts,i remember eteri said that diana once ask her "dont you trust me" because eteri seems nervous everytime she competes while she was more relax with other students during competition. Its hard to be a mother and a coach at the same time. It was impressive how eteri manage to juggle her time for her daughter as a single mom and to her super demanding coaching job.

Not sure where to put it, but rumors are that a bunch of Medvedeva's fans basically bullied Diana (Eteri's daughter) on instagram.

Dude, and this is why I don't want "idols" in figure skating. It would be much better if the skaters had short careers and would be "replaced" every year.

I saw other people's posts about Diana saying that "she tired of seeing Eteri crying every night" after what Evgenia has done. She(Diana) asks people to calm down and stop posting various offensive posts about her and Eteri. Not sure if its true though.

Some of that $10,000 also goes to the Fed, the skater and coach do not simply get to split it among themselves.

My friend, they get paid something like lets say 60k rubles or 90k rubles a month or some average russian salary. Feel free to translate it into USD.
That is not anywhere close to the bonus they get when skaters win.
Literally, a top coach like Eteri / Buyanova / Mishin main source of income is their share of prize money + government bonus for the wins.

Radionova left Goncharenko to be coached by Buyanova, clearly hoping that Buyanova's reputation would get her into the team for major competitions.

Overall its a lot of Medvedeva drama, and old stuff including Pushy vs Yagudin and V/T. But the Goncharova part may be interesting.

Inna GONCHARENKO does not coach anyone anymore. She left the profession, after parting ways with her beloved pupil Elena Radionova a year ago.

- I'm tired. Both morally and physically. I want to rest.

- In your opinion, could Etere Tutberidze hold Alina Zagitova in juniors, as Medvedeva wanted?

- If we talk about single skaters, you can compete at junior level up to 18 years inclusive. But the sports time is very short. Especially for girls. Therefore, all coaches try to release their pupils to senior tournaments as early as possible. When a coach has two athletes equal in strength in the group, one of them will always be dissatisfied.

- Tutberidze wanted not one medal in Pyeongchang, but two at once?

- I think that Eteri was not the only one who decided about Zagitova. It's the Olympic season! It didn't happen without Federation envolvement. In life, everything happens - trauma, illness. Medvedeva, by the way, got injured right before the Grand Prix Final. And if it happened right before the Olympics? The Russian national team could end up without a gold medal at all. We needed a safety net. In the person of Alina Zagitova.

It's just that there are very few top coaches per the total number of coaches out there who still can support themselves.

There is another substantial source of income for coaches which is extra hours of tutoring on top of what they have to provide as part of their job. If parents want their children to get to a high level they need those extra hours with different specialists and they add up.

I actually see how Inna would be still hurt after coaching Elena for over 10 years, and winning many medals together.
Also, I kinda think that it would be easier for Inna if, lets say, Elena moved to Buyanova, improved and made the Olympic team, because then it would feel like it makes more sense.

Well, we are basically discussing top coaches =)
For top coaches, medal winning students are an important source of income, i think we agree on this.
