Nathan Chen

yes, Vera was the reason for Nathan's (reluctant) haircut: http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/st...n-take-sport-new-heights-2018-winter-olympics

'He arrived at nationals in January sponsored by Coca-Cola, Bridgestone, United Airlines, Nike and Kellogg's, and dressed for competition in a palette of black, white and charcoal designed by fashion icon Vera Wang, who also directed him to lop off his raffish curls to match her sleek, modern style.'

He can grow his hair back come spring. In the meantime, he'll defer to Vera Wang's attention to detail. "She wanted the full package, everything to be very clean, very sharp, since that's what the programs entailed," he says of his curls. "But I just didn't want to mention it and see if it was brought back up again. Hoping that she would forget. But I knew she wouldn't."

In this video - the contrast between his Nationals haircut and previous curls! Also can see the fabric of his 'brushstroke' top quite well

He did, he looked a lot less boyish (maybe that’s why people were not happy with it? Idk), more sleek to me. Those costumes I don’t think would go with his hair super curly (like say Cup of Russia hair) but they go well with either the short cut or the slightly longer hair with slight curls ( like in Worlds which I think was his best look so far. His hair was perfect cut, length, right amount of curls. The perfect ratio 😂)

Also as a general observation, Nathan looks different to me since olympics in the sense that he had more of a baby face before and I feel like that experience alone aged him 10 years (in a good way, like more mature even with his extra curls).

this doesn't surprise me. Evan's OGM winning season he was told to grow his hair out in order to slick it back for aesthetic reasons.

Thank you. I figured she’s pretty exclusive about who she works with given how big of a name she is. I appreciate the info :)

I liked Nathan’s haircut. He looks good with curls and without, I really don’t know why people freaked out about it, it’s not like he looked horrible lol. He looked more grown and mature.

Me too, I love both. In his short hair, he looks clean, radiant, mature but still full of youth, very handsome! :luv17: The haircut goes better with the costumes too. I am happy he had tried different styles. His skin looks particularly good during nationals ;).

yes, Nathan's rogue curl. His cowlick - that if his mom is cutting his hair - knows not to cut too short :)

Nathan had some stress zits at the Olympics - but his skin condition was amazing at worlds!

I remember during Nationals on ice desk, the panel was actually debating about Nathan’s hair and whether they preferred the curls or short hair more lol. For the record, all but Jackie preferred his curls because indeed they are his trademark but Jackie liked the sleek cool look of his short hair

I didn’t really follow Nathan’s skating back then. I only saw him at the 2017 National as this charming boy. Then saw him at 2018 National as a handsome young man. Almost like a different person. It took me a while to get used to the new Nathan.

Curl or no curl, that is the question. I wonder if hair ever attracted this much attention for any other skaters -:).

The only one I can think of is Dorothy Hamill way back. Her hair was kinda the original “Rachel” and every girl wanted her bowl cut. Her hair was a big deal at the time. But otherwise, Nathan is the only other one I can think of that has trademark hair in skating. The state of his curls are a great source of discussion 😂

Ah, interesting point about Hamill.

Meryl Davis, Evan actually used to, there are others.

Shoma’s fans definitely discuss his hair - styling, highlights, etc.

Alexandra Trusova has rapunzel-length hair and I have seen mentions of this

I think Brendan Kerry is known for his hair/signature haircut

Jason’s signature ponytail

Ashley’s different hair colors

Nathan seems to like his curls and I think he is at least somewhat aware that many girls like them a lot too ;)

Hi everyone. I had to register just to ask this: Is Nathan's hair naturally curly? It's very unusual for an Asian person to have naturally curly hair. (It looks great on him though.)

Yes, I love the solo Clark Kent curl that hangs over his forehead, that’s how you know he’s about to go Superman and demolish the competition 😂 . If that lone curl is out, he means business, he’s not messing around lol

Haha love your description Superman out to demolish the competition!

@SkatingMusic me too, Worlds was perfecto from all 360 angles 🤗 @mamamiia me three, though sad he lost the curls for a short time but the overall package was the a fresh Oly style you haven’t seen before.
