This! I remember watching Shoma at 4CC 2015 and being completely mesmerized by his skating, but I was also a bit doubtful about his growth trajectory. His jumps were a bit messy and it just seemed unrealistic for him to be competitive technically. Flash forward to 3 years later and I've never been happier to be proven wrong. Year by year, his weaknesses become less glaring and that's entirely due to the efforts of a smart coaching team and a diligent and talented pupil. Brian is a brilliant coach, but let's not forget that his most successful students, Yuna and Yuzu, were absolute phenoms who very likely would've succeeded without his guidance. I love Brian but he's not the only coach who's capable of producing total package skaters.

He's a fighter, and a hard worker. He doesn't give up. Never. Even if something doesn't work out, he leaves it behind and looks forward. I think the last group of Worlds was pretty telling, even more than his fall at the Olympics. It took so much guts and core strength, stamina, and most of all so much willpower and mental toughness. He is so freaking strong.

I admire him.

Sure, I think he's cute and a wonderful performer and funny and all that, but I really admire him as an athlete more. All his career he was fighting, and I think he will continue to fight against the odds. How many skaters are so small and can do what Shoma does? He's been in the senior circuit for three years, and so much happened, the sport evolved so quickly in such a short time. It's amazing, how he kept up with it. And to me, of course, I want Shoma to win Worlds or the GPF or 4CC. But more than that I just want to keep watching him. New programs, to see his progress artistically which is so much harder these days than it was when his idol Daisuke Takahashi became World Champion. To keep that balance and to stay relevant technically is hard, but I'm looking forward to many years of wonderful skating from Shoma. And it will happen. Because I believe in him.

As always, MaiKatze, you couldn't have said it better! Agree with everything!

I also admire him, believe in him and have a huge respect for everything he has done/overcome and everything he'll do. He's a super athlete with such a mental strength! C'mon, you don't get to be number 2 in the world standings just by gaming, sleeping, eating yakiniku and being cute...it takes A LOT of real hard work and drive!!!

I also wish to keep watching him skate, see how he evolves and how he keeps growing and becoming an unforgettable legend!!!! Shoma is definitely the número uno in my heart!

Really fascinating video! Also, it shows you why he needs that rest in the middle of his StSq. :)
And looking at the scores makes me wonder why his PCS in the men's event was considerably lower than at the team event... :scratch2:

I think the reason was the rest of the competition. The Team Event was a disaster for the Men, sans Shoma and Bychenko, but Bychenko was never a candidate for a medal. Still, I remember being a bit miffed about the score. Sans Lombardia this was the only time Winter had been clean with the planned layout. PCS wise I still think that GPF was the best Winter.

Well said, as always. Just a few days ago, I thought exactly the same thing: that it does not matter for me anymore whether Shoma wins any major titles in his career or not (of course I hope he will, but that's not the point) -- I am simply going to enjoy every moment of his career, of his programs, of his skating. Because it is beauty. As simple as that.

Yes, I agree, and he was a bit tense in the men's event, but still... I wish his PCS were a bit higher. Well, let's hope they will get higher eventually, rather sooner than later, and that this will not cause 'the death of FS', as someone prophecied a while ago.

Of course I would love to see new programs more, but I wouldn't be totally sad if Shoma took Winter into next season. Because I really believe this program had the goods to get him to 107 at least. If the fall/the time deduction hadn't happened, GPF should have been 107, I'm sure of it. But well, perhaps a new short will bring more points!

I agree with MaiKatze about the rest of the competition. I think that Shoma's score in the team event SP was higher than I would have anticipated considering his first quad didn't quite go to plan. I preferred the triple axel he did in that event though.
My favourite part of Winter is the arm movements he makes after his step sequence (he stops whilst facing the audience then turns around and starts again) :)

This! There were so many factors that caused Shoma’s sp in olys to get only 104 but I wouldn’t go too much into details about it. But yes Winter is such a detailed and crafty sp I also would like this pogram to be performed it’s full capacity and get the points it deserved.

This is rather nicely made, I think -- only a StSq, a pause, and the beginning of the second part from the "Turandot".

Beautifully said :points:! You've perfectly summed up why Shoma's such an impressive and admirable athlete. It's rare for athletes to fearlessly confront their weaknesses, but Shoma on the other hand has always faced his weaknesses head on and worked diligently to improve. I strive to be even half as fearless Shoma .

I certainly love Winter as well and imagine it at it's best! But I also wouldn't mind new programs!!
For I have the impression he prefers something new season to season. (After all, once a program is decided, they hear it everyday for the following year.)

I will really miss Winter, but I'm ready for him to have 2 new programs. I think he probably is too. And oh, how I would give anything to know what the programs are and is anyone helping out on the choreography. Please, please tell us! Maybe he will make an announcement soon on his official Facebook page?

Yes, Shoma is very cute! But I think most of us fell in love with his skating long before we fell in love with his cute ways. His personality is just the frosting on the cake. I loved his skating from the first time I saw him. I was so impressed with his GUTS, considering that it was his senior debut (at Sk Amer). Neither the SP nor the FS were perfect skates, but from the very beginning, his potential was so obvious. I was happy for him that he was so well received during his debut!

Alex said he is very unusual in that he got his 3A and 4T so late, and it only happened because he is a super hard worker. As our friend Jeffrey Buttle says, natural talent can only take you so far. After that, it's due to hard work. I like that he works hard and has also learned to work smarter.

I've thought about his early troubles with the 3A a lot. Strange how in a way, maybe those difficulties have ended up helping him. For so long, he skated programs knowing that the likelihood of falling on the 3A was very high. It taught him early on that you can't let that disrupt your program. You have to just keep going. We see him do that time and time again...The ultimate example -- at Worlds 2016 when he fell REALLY hard on his 4T and grabbed his side because it really hurt. Next he had to jump a 3A - Uncle Kurt "He's about to find out a lot about himself." He jumped a beautiful 3A and the audience went crazy cheering. Right then and there I knew I would be following him for the rest of his career. He was amazing!

https://www.colantotte.jp/campaign/shoma2018/ YES! Sounds like Colan Totte is doing another Meet and Greet event for buyer's of Shoma's blue colored necklace. Hooray! Of course the Google translation is weird, but it sounds like the sale starts June 15. We need to get Kanna there to be our eyes and ears again!

Adding -- Of course I should know that yawning shoma would give a better translation! :luv17: Thank you y.s. "Colantotte's doing a limited release of the SHOMA2018 blue and gold necklace he wore for Grand Prix Finals omg purchasers get to apply for a lottery for another Shoma meet and greet event."

Arriba! That was a wonderful way of saying it! I felt the same way. First time I saw him skate I was instantly hooked and was thinking ‘who is this guy’. The more I know about him the more admiration I can feel for him. He worked and took his skating career step by step and although he bursts into his senior seasons and got to the top quite quickly you can see that he’s taking it level by level, cherishing every progress that he made. I remember one of the cbc lady said that he is very patient when he jumps and I think he’s very patient in his approach of growing in his skating career. I have no doubt that he will continue going up and I’m willing to wait to witness all the greatness he will achieve.

I definitely remember those remarks. I think that was Carol Lane. She remarked on his patience with the jumps and with his other movements too, how unhurried they were. I remember her being really impressed with the ice coverage on his 3A and I thought it looked like he was shot out of a cannon!
