2018-2019 GP Assignments

CSA suddenly announced they cannot host any events this season - the reason given was so they can renovate all their facilities or something. So no CoC, no Shanghai Trophy and not China JGP.

Where's the JGP event going to be held then?

At least it wasn't something that would cause arguments among us.

The JGP event has been moved to Vancouver, Canada. They are still waiting on Korean fed to confirm if they can host the GP or not. Shanghai Trophy Senior B event is totally cancelled though. :(

Does anyone knoe when GP assignments are gonna be held? I have seen information about 25th of June but it differs from the previous information about 28th of June *hmmm*

The 25th is the deadline for Korea to inform the ISU whether it will be hosting a GP event this season (as China won’t be hosting their event this time around), not for the announcement on assignments.

Presumably if they say yes the assignments will come out at the normal time. Some juggling around would need to happen behind the scenes to account for changes about assumed host picks and their effect on guaranteed spots, but the feds have had forewarning so all that’s probably been ironed out already.

I don’t think they can push it much longer tbh, because skaters and team will need to arrange traveling, conditioning, plan their season. They can’t wait too long so presumably they have a backup plan ready if Korea says no... I think they’ll accept though

I’m guessing that P/C do SCI now. There’s typically a Canadian team in the top three seeds, so this is a great opportunity to expand their collection that may not come again often. Plus, it’s close to base, so it’s convenient.

Stepanova/Bukin are now the sixth seed. Depending on what happens with Cappellini/Lanotte, Zahorski/Guerrero may also move into the second bracket.

If C/L decide to continue (partially due to whether M/H in pairs are going to continue), this could be a good time for them as a top 3 seed to potentially pick up some GP golds. Even though they are World Champions, they only won a a GP once, at COC vs. C/B.

Yes, well, when you don't have a host country in ice dance, you frequently end up competing in someone else's backyard or in the deeper fields. Which is what will likely happen to C&L if they are seed #3 and invited to Rostelecom and/or Canada. On the plus side, they might get to skate in Korea or even . . . Milano.

I am hoping Korea will take the open GP spot, but finally seeing Cappellini & Lanotte get to skate at home on the GP would be pretty outstanding.

I don't expect them to compete. But, hey, if they do, I will be cheering for them.

Also, Lauriault/Le Gac are now seeded in twelfth position.

If C/L also retire, Soucisse/Firus enter the seeding.

In that scenario, seven of the twelve seeds would be Gadbois teams.

If the process is the same as last year, only top 6 are seeded. Seeds 1-3 can't meet each other. Same as seeds 4-6. 7-10 in Pairs/Ice Dance and 7-12 in Single are guaranteed 2 spots but they are not technically seeded.

2.1 Seeded Skaters/Couples
a) Skaters/Couples who have placed 1 – 6 in each of the 4 disciplines (Men, Ladies, Pair Skating, Ice Dance) at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017 will be considered to be Seeded Skaters/Couples and will be assigned, by draw, to skate in two events.

2.2. Invited Skaters/Couples
a) Skaters who have placed 7 – 12 in Men and Ladies and Pairs/Couples who have placed 7 – 10 in Pair Skating and Ice Dance at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017 will be guaranteed to be selected for two ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events, provided that these Skaters/Couples fulfil the requirements of the minimum Grand Prix score as per paragraph 2.3. below. If there are any retirements from placements 7 – 12 (respectively 7 – 10 for Pair Skating/Ice Dance), the vacant places will be completed with the next ranked Skaters/Couples of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017 (placed 13 and below for Singles – placed 11 and below for Pair Skating and Ice Dance) will be moved up to fill their position as Placement 7 – 12 Skaters (respectively 7 – 10 Pairs/Couples).

But in Ice Dance it would need a very skewed distribution of skaters to have more than 2 from 7-10 group in one event though. So each event will likely get 3-4 from previous Worlds top 10

Have P/C committed to doing the Grand Prix circuit? I haven't seen a lot of skating pics or updates from her on social media - lots of other opportunities posted, but not skating - wonder if they will sit out GP as well?

They’ll be starting their training in July.

With skaters like Kaetlyn and others skipping the GP, I was wondering when the cutoff was for skaters to withdraw for non-injury purposes. We knew about Kaetlyn a while ago but others are more recent. That will certainly open up spots for skaters who thought they'd be alternates at best, to viable for a GP spot, right?
