Skaters Who Breakout Later in Their Careers

Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe? THey skated for about to years internationally and then cracked top ten in the world.

The same could be said of Vanessa James after James and Ciprès's breakout performance at the WTT last year.

James and Cipres definitely had a breakout last season, as early as Euros actually, where they finally got onto the podium becoming the first French team in fourteen years to do so. Their coaching change was a great decision and I would say the Sound of Silence is their signature/breakout program.

A new thing I learned today is that Vanessa actuallly skated in singles in both the US and UK for a few years each before partnering with Bonheur and then Cipres. Also great to see how far she has come from those early days as a pairs skater.

Let's not forget Bruno Massot, who also skated in singles and then switched to pairs. He skated with several partners, including with Popova, in that time skating under the shadow of James/Cipres, who often got the sole Worlds spot and the 2014 Olympic spot ahead of them. Very few thought that Bruno is OGM material when Aliona first announced she was teaming up with him to go for that elusive gold. I think it wasn't until their 2016-2017 programs and getting a close 2nd at 2017 Worlds that people legitimately thought that they can win it all. Of course, Massot went through many obstacles to get there, including fighting with the French Fed and working his butt off to rapidly improve, with the help of Aliona's experience, to get to his first Worlds podium at the age of 27 and the top of the podium at the age of 29.

US Pairs skaters Deanna Stellato & Nathan Bartholomay. She was born 1983, he 1989. She was a singles skater who retired in 2001 and returned in pairs 16 years later; they took the Pewter Medal 4th position at 2017 US Nationals. Check out their FF.. shout out to el henry for great postings there on their career.. remarkable story and couple!!

^I'd say more Deanna than Nathan, since Nathan got to go to the Olympics after just a few seasons with Felicia Zhang.

I'd say Hubbell and Donohue. They had a really promising debut in 2012, but then didn't make the World team for several years because they were stuck behind Davis/White; Chock and Bates and the Shibutanis.

Random thought but actually, the ice rink environment is a good place for vampires since they don't ever have to see the sun and the rink is kept a nice cool temp. Definitely could live for 1000 years ;)

It also serves us a possible explanation why Figure Skaters tend to be so extraordinarily good looking
