Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club

....

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking only about the name of this fan thread?? (As a completely separate thing from any thread in The Edge or anywhere else.)

I could be wrong, but I think the original name of this fan thread was/is "Team Brian Orser".
Don't think it has been renamed since being started?

Hope that "Team TCC," who started the thread, will give you a definitive answer.

Yes, thank you, that is what I was asking. I do know our "Edge" thread is different

But I could very easily be confusing the OP with the thread.:o:

Brian Orser's a cute Yuzu fanboy.

(It sounds REALLY good though: https://www.instagram.com/p/BlGO0U_ACds/?taken-by=muskokabrewery Who wants to buy me one, LOL)

The poor brewery is going to wonder why all these random people from Japan cleaned up their cases.

Cory Circelli is listed as a Skate Canada Next Gen skater in Men's singles...which gave him priority for the assignment...

He and his partner aren't Next Gen listed in ice dance however, so they'll have to work to earn a JPG spot during the national summer series competitions. They are confirmed for Minto Summer Skate, for example.

Bruce Waddell of TCC by contrast, is on the Next Gen team as an ice dancer with his training mate Natalie D'Allessandro. They have a JPG assignment in dance. Bruce did not however make the initial cut this year in singles. But he will be doing the national summer series in singles so he may yet get a singles assignment.

As a general point, it's fairly common in Canada for ice dancers and pairs skaters to continue to stay competitive in singles as long as possible. At the Junior level, there are quite a few two event skaters all the way to nationals.

Thanks for the information, TGee! That's really interesting to hear.

Another reason that this =/= the Team Brian Orser thread in the FF is that fairly often we mention skaters who are not Brian's students. Conrad O, Corey C, Alison S, and Bruce W, are just some of the members of Team Cricket, who don't have Brian listed as the lone coach, or even as a co-coach. And members seem to use the "Team Cricket" designation themselves, so I personally use that because it embodies the team approach seen at TCC. We can't forget the important work that Tracy, Lee, Paige, Geoff, Andrew, Karen, and the other coaches and staff do. Tracy (Yuzu, Javi, Jason, Shingo, Evgenia, Boyang(?)) and Lee (Gabby, Stephen) co-coach with Brian. He himself would tell you he's not a solo act.

Well according to Yuzuru and Javier themselves it was beneficial for them to often train together as partners (doing the same elements), Yuzu even went as far as saying that he owes part of his success to Javier. Also I think mates/partners is just nomenclature :)

Agreed, I'm a little baffled by taking the term 'training partner' seriously... of course they weren't in any formal sense - and most of their training was solo, that's a given - but does it matter? They also worked together more than most elite singles skaters did, as is clear in numerous interviews.

I will say one of the videos I add to my 'calm and soothing' pile is simply the two of them and Brian doing those long slow (I suspect slow-motion :)) gliding stokes in practice, at once in synch but still very different, each very them. It's quite wonderful to watch.

:palmf: I'm facepalming @ myself because this is at least the third thing I post today that has been posted in the past 2 days already.

The thread is moving quite fast:biggrin:

I've noticed that Corey Circelli is assigned to the JGP in men (which he has been in the past) but he's also an ice dancer. Kind of reminds me of Charlie White (who competed as a singles men until he was a junior). Anyone who knows him have thoughts on whether he'll be choosing one or the other soon?

I know there are a few ice dance pairs at TCC. What's the program like there?

It is interesting to think about because TCC isn’t really known these days for pairs and ice dance - but I think they were in the past?

I know you’ve seen this summer brochure before, but the ice schedule shows a couple of early morning sessions for ice dancers and pairs, and the bios show which coaches specialize in those disciplines. I’m guessing the fall “regular” sessions will be different, but since everything is really individualized, there may not be a public ice /class schedule for the “regular” year round members.

But I guess a skater like Corey, who does singles and ice dance (admirable!), would have a hybrid program - some classes and lessons for singles stuff and special stuff for dance. I think someone recently posted something from his Instagram - it looked like a class list for Tracy’s stroking class - and he was in the same class as Yuzuru, Jason, Evgenia, etc.

I can't recall where I read it at the moment, but I do seem to recall an interview with Brian (and a few other references) talking about how they'll pair TCC skaters up at the rink to practice together in joint sessions. Not clear if it was full practice or just things like footwork drills (like we've seen video of Yuzu and Javi doing synchronized footwork drills before). So I think this is where the idea of Yuzu and Javi being training "partners" came from.

Ah, several of Team Cricket's juniors got their JGP assignments published today! https://skatecanada.ca/event-schedule/#tab-31263c319f20cf01436

Two spots:
Young Stephen gets Bratislava and Vancouver! Conrad got Salzburg and Slovenia! Joseph, who is participating in TCC's summer school but hails from the Patinage Rosemère in Québec, also got 2 spots, in Lithuania and Czech Republic.

One spot:
Bruce/Natalie (ice dance), Corey, and Alison will be accompanying Conrad to Linz. I assume they might get second spots depending on how their summer goes.
It's Stephen's first year on the JGP, so perhaps his more experienced rinkmates have been/will be sharing their experiences with him.

Wishing them all the best of luck in the JGP series!

Evgenia just posted a photo of Patrick Chan's sparkling wine in her IG story. She doesn't drink at all, but she got someone to buy it for her.

Man so much drinking in this thread.

Everyone pointed out that Yuzuru clearly benefitted from training with Javi... But that is exactly the thing. It worked out great for Yuzuru, for Javi not so much. I can't see Yuzuru happily settling for Olympic bronze no matter how much he enjoys training with, say, Boyang.

Haha! Now I feel like an almost Insta twin, since I posted a pic of his icewine around the time of the Olympics. My partner and I enjoyed it!

And there may be Yuzu beer being served very close to us! Happily the restaurant in question also has great food and a nice breezy outdoor space, so whether or not it's in stock we should enjoy.

Haleth, you need to be my tour guide if I ever make it to Toronto! You sound like fun! :)

And we can talk endlessly about skating too, ofc. :)

I'd argue if Yuzu had made too many mistakes in his Olympic FS and Javi went clean and would have won the Olympic gold, Yuzu would have felt Javi deserved the title and congratulated him, just like he was when Javi won Worlds over him.

Also, I'd argue that it worked out for Javi very well, too.

It worked great for Javi too. Before Yuzuru moved to TCC, Javier was a mind case... the same 2012 where Yuzuru earned bronze in Worlds, Javier bombed both LPs in Euros and Worlds. Having Yuzuru around helped Javier to learn to manage the pressure. Also there is an interview where Tracy talks about how relaxed Javier used to be about training before Yuzuru arrival and how having someone like Yuzuru pushed Javier to improve and taking the training more serious.

Both Javi and Brian have often sited Yuzu as a huge factor in motivating Javi to train harder and reach the heights of skating he has, so I doubt Javi would say training with Yuzu didn't benefit him. In fact he's stated the opposite on more than one occasion. That Javi didn't win the Olympics has little to do with Yuzu and probably more to do with Javi just being a little past his peak as a skater.

It does benefit both, Javi is more relaxed person, his Olympic goal is bit different from Yuzu, his goal is a medal (not to say he will not be ecstatic with a silver or gold). Yuzu's specific goal is Gold. Javi just wants an Olympic medal before retiring from competitions and he feels pretty complete.

that's why i suggested a team cricket page.. but it's okay... i quit... at least the speculation has stopped... the fanboying/girling doesn't bug me that much ;)

we have in Quebec a chain of restaurants called Yuzu... i don't think Japanese fans go visit it like crazy but i have never been so i cannot tell you.
