2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I don't understand why people always use the older olympic winners situations to predict the future of current skaters. Shizuka stopped skating after winning gold because she was already old by the sport standards, Tara stopped at a young age because her hips were screwed, Yuna also had a serious lower back injury that was already there before the 2010 olympics so she took a break (and she also had a hard time with media attention so she was happy to stay away from the spotlight for some time) but she still came back and won Worlds + olympic silver. Their situations are not similar to Alina, she's not injured, she's healthy as far as we know. Why are you predicting injuries for her when she's out there jumping 3lz-3los at an ice show? anybody could get injured on the ice next season, the ice doesn't target olympic winners. You know even those you predict are gonna win could get injured right?

Yulia had so much class, style and elegance. She looked good in almost everything. Very talented beautiful skater.

true! she was something special. i always feel sad we probably didn't see the best she could have become

Looking at that tweet, wow, the hate against Alina and Eteri went all over the place.

I liked what i saw of the new SP, the only thing is Alina is getting taller which may become an issue.

Is anyone else thinking that Alina keeping the 3Lz-3Lo in the SP is not the smartest? She can do 3Lz-3T much more easily, and historically with higher GOE. If she puts that combo in the second half, not only is it more stable but she'll actually score higher on it because of bonus and higher GOE than the Lz-Lo, with less risk (other than not being able to tack it on later; but I've never seen her miss it). It makes so much more sense to me, as Lz-Lo's advantage is nonexistent in SP given that it's much more difficult and she doesn't get nearly as much GOE

Proofs on this one? She did Lutz-Toe only at juniors competitions because that year 3loop was the required solo triple in the short.

Whenever they could choose, it was always 3ltz-3lo.

Also no at the second half combo, cause now in the SP you have only one element. Eteri more than everyone else is the coach that pushed her skaters to train 3-3 with every triples as a B plan in case you screw the combo, so in order to have that opportunity you have to have the combo before the solo triple in the short.

The answer is quite simple: Adelina and Yulia. They were all the rage four years ago and where are they now? One constantly injured and not competing, the other one out with eating disorder. So, naturally, people are going to look at little Alina who is admittedly quite a bit similar to Yulia. Young, fragile, moved away from home to achieve success at a young age, same coach, even the red dress is there. And they‘re expecting her to take the same part. It isn‘t necessarily evil to assume this as we‘ve seen from the past how fast things can happen, especially to a young soul like Alina or Yulia, who never had that much of pressure and international exposure before their victory in the OG. And it both got to them - Alina at Worlds, Yulia in the Individual competition. Or that‘s how it seems at least. So, I do understand why people get to this conclusion.

However, I also think Alina and Yulia are different people and we need to be careful in making comparisons. The similarities in their stories are striking, yes, but they‘re still individuals and we can‘t really know what is going to happen to Alina solely based on what happened to Yulia. Alina so far seems healthy, happy and not like puberty is affecting her too much. She‘s currently skating in shows, probably not caring about a thing in the world other than her skating, making new friends and teaching the Masaru pose to others. She‘s also still jumping her 3Lz-3Lo without big problems. (Judging from what we‘ve seen I personally can‘t tell whether it‘s underrotated or not but since some users her said so... it‘s still landed, though and that‘s what matters) Also, losing her Worlds title might actually have been a good thing since now she‘s still missing a victory in her ”collection“ and is hungrier to get it next season. All in all, my feeling tells me Alina will be fine. She might not be as stellar as last season when puberty kicks in but I think she‘ll be able to deal with it just fine. But that‘s just what I think of course and everybody‘s entitled to make assumptions themselves. We‘ll see what happens only next season anyway. :)

I just saw this on my twitter feed! is it new? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjXfz6uWsAAWhcm.jpg

I don't remember reading it already. I wonder how strictly they'll apply these new rules  Your PCS scores can be impacted pretty bad if you fall, have a bad landing or wrong edge. I know the ISU sucks and always finds a way to cheat their own rules anyway but i'm curious to see how this will impact the scores  can the season just begin already? i'm so hyped

I'm still wondering if i should go to IDF to see zhenya & rika. It's not even 2hrs away from where i live by train

Omg, why do you even need to ask? Of course you should! And give us plenty of live reports if you‘re there.

can you just request vacation days to go?

i'll keep my vacation days to go to Spain in October! my uncle is a doctor, i'll ask him to scribble something for me to justify me being sick (i'm ashamed to say i've done it before, maybe a bit too often actually :slink: ). The tickets are also at such a good price. I can't miss my maybe only chance to see Zhenya & Rika

All EXs the past season. Of course the larger GOEs were from her junior days.

Yesterday, I went memory lane a bit and re-watched Yulia's Elvis SP from Russian Nats in 2015 - I have to say that I've never been a huge fan of her during her competitive career, but I really started to appreciate how her skating matured more and more, feeling regret that we won't see more of that. At the same time, I really admire her for putting her health and comfort first and now working with children.
And they all seem so happy! The children seem to adore Yulia and Elena. I know they try to put the school's best face forward on Instagram, but it's obvious how much Yulia and Elena love what they're doing. :luv17:

I think it’s brilliant. A slow transition into the world of coaching. They seem to be inspiring kids and adults and look to continue with their workshops internationally. I’m just glad she didn’t disappear from the world of skating. I think her days of inspiring people are far from over. :)

Anyway...is there any word if she plans to continue as an announcer? I got so excited whenever I got a chance to read any translations people made. The way she pulls for everyone and sees the competition from the eyes of a current competitor is very nice.

I really hope so! Yulia's commentating was quite refreshing and with good balance of technical notion and her own impressions, always with class and without any personally-inflicted jabs (at least from what I heard/translated). And I really like her 'no sheet' attitude:)

Russian Entries for Linz, this time Kostornaya. and Gubanova have been given the nod. Interestingly Shcherbakova isn't in the list of alternates which could indicate the Fed is considering her JGP Spot at Bratislava as a certainty (Tarusina is a listed alternate)
