2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I’m thinking either could win, but because Kostornaya is junior worlds silver, she may get the higher PCS. Kanysheva has beautiful jumps too, is she as artistic as Kostornaya? I haven’t seen videos to compare the two.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are only two people in the world who actually address to Eteri personally as Eteri - her mom and TAT.
First of all - it's wery correct. For example, even in my thoughts I call her Eteri Georgievna. Just westerns don't understand this (i'm realize how strange and complicated patronymic sounds for them) so, on this forum i'm usually call her Eteri, like others.
Second - TAT's part very hilarious :) "You from Eteri's group?"

If RusFed isn't stupid, she will. 186 is higher than how Panenkova won last year, and higher than all of the silver medalists' except Panenkova and Kostornaya. Second place is more than enough to make the final, even if she only gets bronze at a second event. Please, RusFed, use your brains.

It is expected that Trusova and Kostornaya will win their events, so they will then get the second spot, same as Scherbakova. Then the Russian federation will have to compare the skaters who didn’t win. I am guessing they will be comparing the placement and score of Tarusina with the placements and scores of Kanysheva who is due to skate next week, Sinitsina who is doing the third event (and will be worse than Trusova) and Tarakanova, who is currently in the 4th event with Scherbakova. I love Tarusina and hope she will get her second event, but realistically, if Kanysheva, Sinitsina and Tarakanova all finish second, it will be the scores who will decide who out of Kanysheva, Sinitsina, Tarakanova and Tarusina will get a second spot. It is very unlikely that they all will get it. And it is completely irrelevant how Panenkova skated last year. They will compare it against skaters from this year.

Just saw the interview Anna S gave in English after her FS and wow her English is nearly perfect, good for her!

:otopic:

On the names' subject: Meanwhile, in Brazil, teachers are referred by nicknames suggested by them (so, not a way students find to disrespect the teachers). I've had pot (the thing you use to cook), as well as little-name and big-name. And, of course, shortenings that aren't shortenings at all.

I’m also new to Russia culture and traditions so please correct me if I’m wrong. But from what I understand this way of address is more formal and a term of respect especially for teachers. Using her first name and patronymic name (I think that’s what it’s called) instead of just her first name or her actual surname. I looked it up once after being very confused why some refer to her as Eteri Tuberitze and others Eteri Georgievna.

So my understanding from the poster was that this was also a joke. That the kids wouldn’t dare use the informal first name only format to address Eteri.

Using the given name + patronymic, such as Eteri Georgievna, is a respectful way to talk to someone older, or to a teacher / coach / professor / boss or to
a person you respect. For example, kids in school call their teachers by their given name and patronymic. This is basically a must when talking to the person, unless the person tells you otherwise. For example, while some students indeed call Daniil Danya, it would be disrespectful for a new student to call him that, so a new student would call him Daniil Makarovich regardless of the age difference and whatever, and then it is up to Daniil to let the student know he is fine with being Danya.

On the other hand, using this combo is not a must when talking about the person - for instance, it is not an issue if a student uses Eteri Tutberidze in an interview.

Also, considering that skating is international, i can see skaters using name + last name in interviews because russians are pretty much aware all this patronymic stuff is confusing to foreigners.

PS: since someone mentioned russian diminutives. There is this thing, they are not a shorter form of the name, but an "intimate" form of the name. Take John and Johnny in english.

They should send Scherbakova with Trusova instead Sinitsyna.
Then Trusova with Kostornaya.. We will get super show and some weaker girls could fight for gold on another JGP. Sinitsyna/Tarusina/Kanysheva who already got silver. So it'll be easy for everyone to get a ticket to JGP Finale.

I don't see Kaneshewa that strong. She just doesn't have a WOW factor.
She doesn't stand out from the rest Russian Ladies.
However, i think she is better than Tarusina.
