2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when Zagitova moved to Eteri at age 12 she didn’t even have all her triple yet? And three years later she’s the Olympic champion who came close to winning everything in her senior debut. And Kostornia was also a relative unknown before last year? And now she’s the second best junior in the world? She didn’t even have a fan fest thread until after last years test skates, less than a year ago.
Kostornaya did not participate at the test skates, she wasn't invited.

That's how unknown she was. Even Zagitova was invited.

Sure they have, but they are not untouchable.

Also from a population demographic standpoint they have more depth because they have more people to choose from.

If you look at it from that perspective they actually have a smaller take of the medals at worlds when comparing them to other nations...just saying
China and the US have greater populations than Russia. Canada is actually the most impressive if you are looking just at medals per population.

Even if we just look at this years ladies worlds (senior and junior) three Russian medals per population is less than 1 Canadian medal.

Didn’t know that, thank you! So someone unknown and not invited to test skates could be the best in the world within a year.

Of course they are not untouchable. Just extremely strong, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Serious question: I have a hard time telling if a skater is on the correct edge for a flip or a lutz; these Russian girls (Trusova, Shcherbakova, Kanysheva, Panenkova, etc) , can they seriously do both a correct flip AND a correct lutz?!? I mean can they seriously do it, and the judges aren’t ignoring it? Cuz if they can, WOW!!!! How?!?!?! That’s so hard for many skaters.

At least Kanysheva and Trusova have essentially perfect takeoff edges. Shcherbakova's Lutz is currently quite shallow but not bad enough to deserve to be called. But she fixed her Lip... I guess it is tough to find a balance there.

Speaking of which, I had to go back to look at Kanysheva's program to take a look at the jumps and WOW. I'm 100% sure she'll have the best skating skills out of all juniors, better than Kostornaya's, even. Completely mindblowing.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when Zagitova moved to Eteri at age 12 she didn’t even have all her triple yet? Being 12 Zagitova had not 3F and 3+3 combo. She practiced in Izhevsk.
Being 13 (practicing at Eteri group) she progressed. At September she had all 5 triples and 2A+3Lo combo, after that even better - 3Lz+3Lo, but that season (2015/2016) she was unstable, often mistaken. But in 2015/2016 season she was an interesting skater and I wrote "don't forget Zagitova, she may become promising". She became promising only for few months after I wrote it - won JGP Event. After that - won JGP Final and JrWorlds, next season won both GP Enents, GP Final, Olympics.

Kostornaia became promising from beginning of 2015/16 season. She was very good at early September (being 12). After that - injury, and she did not compete after October 2015 to beginning of season 2016/2017. At season 2016/2017 she was significantly worse (did not fully restore). At early September 2017 at Open Moscow Junior Championships she was so nice and strong (I've seen it by my eyes), and I wrote "Congratulate us all! New star born!" Officials of Federation also watched this competition and she got 6th JGP Event while she was not invited to test skate (did not deserve it by previous results). Won 6th JGP Event, 2nd at 7th, JGP Final, JrWorlds, 3rd an Senior Nationals.

Btw Trusona also was not Wunderkind as Radionova or Gubanova. I've first recognized her at January 2016 (she was 11 and half years old) - at warm-up of competition she several times landed very nice 3Lz both arms up. At season 2016/2017 she was very good but not the best - won only one Moscow competition while she was at most 2nd or 3rd (2 times including JrNats 4th). Her excellent results - from season 2017/2018.

It's not like Russia has had the most success in ladies' in the last quad or anything :sarcasm:

No one denies that Russia had most success in ladies in the past quad. But it is because it is so many of them, that if even a half of them doesn’t work out, there will still be plenty of them ready to grab the medal. So one still can’t forecast who will be the great on in four years time.

It's an interesting lineup for sure. To me, the most exciting part by far will be watching the two Eteri skaters going head to head. I guess this will be the debut competition for both of them? Although, I also am somewhat curious about what kind of form Tsurskaya is in after the coaching change.

JGP assignments thought: is Russia more likely to assign two people who've won JGPs to go against each other or assign a gold and a silver to each event? (+one event with 2 silvers)

Guess for JGP 5: Kostornaia + Tarusina?

That would make sense for me

and then week 6 would have Trusova and Kanysheva and week 7 would have Sinitsyna and Tarakanova

That's possible, but I think it'll go like this.

5. Kostornaia + someone new(Vasilieva?)

Then of the 5 non-Eteri girls, they'd select the 3 who performed the best. One would be in the 6th competition with Trusova, the 2 others in the final JGP event. And ideally, all 6 would then qualify for JGP finals.

It depends on what they want to prioritize, I imagine.

Not gonna happen. Gubanova will probably get her event if her legs heal, so someone (Kanysheva, Sinitsina or Tarusina) won’t get their second event.

There was an interview snippet of Anna's on the article ISU posted on their site. Mostly repeats, but the interesting quote was:

“My main goal for this season is to skate clean and to land a quad Lutz in another competition. I did not try it this time because I need more stability in this jump. Sometimes I also train the quad toeloop, but at the moment I concentrate on the quad Lutz,“ she continued.

Which would indeed mean that the 4T would be there as well. If it also is true that she's planning on eventually including 3A, that'll be quite a layout.
