Sergei Voronov: ‘I choose to skate’

A few people were probably surprised to see the name of Russia’s Sergei Voronov on the Grand Prix lists for this upcoming 2018-19 season. They might not have expected the 30-year-old skater to continue his career, especially since he came in fourth at nationals last December and did not qualify for the Olympic Games. However, Voronov has decided to continue to do what he loves – training and competing.

Denis Ten choreographed his long. I can't wait to see it, but will be sad at the same time knowing there will be no more. Here's hoping Sergei enjoys his 15th competitive season!

He got into touch with Ten, who was surprised that Voronov asked him to help him with the program. “He said, ‘I can mess up everything’ to which I said openly and without any doubt, ‘No, Denis, you are not messing up’. I did not sweet-talk. I was very convinced of Denis.”

Voronov already had a piece of music in mind when the travelled to Kazakhstan, but Ten suggested that he use Way Down We Go by Kaleo.

“I suggested another option, but he convinced me and I am grateful, again, and to my deep regret I cannot write to him now or call him and tell him, ‘Denis, you were right,'” said Voronov. “We had an interesting, creative discussion. I gave in and now I understand how right that was. He did the music. Everything was done to his taste. I couldn’t dream of anyone better to have done my program.”

Seems like Voronov competes at Ondrej Nepala in two weeks. Good luck to him expressing his and our feelings

I am so glad he is continuing. I loved his 'come back' last year during the GP, even though he missed the EC and OG. Looking forward to seeing his Long Programmes, even if it will make me a tad emotional because of what lies behind it.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. I've liked his skating for several years now, and for me, after Menshov's retirement, he's become the most charismatic and plain exciting-to-watch Russian male skater. Go, Sergei! Have a great season.

OMG must be hard emotional for him skating to D10 work. I have Way Down We Go as my ringtone for couple of years now. If I remember correctly it was Peter Liebers' last SP(?).

There was a thread a little while ago asking what program you were most looking forward to this season. My answer was Voronov's "Way Down We Go" because I have a soft spot for Sergei, I really like the song and think it will suit him well, and because of Denis choreographing it. At the time, I thought it was his SP and now am even happier to find out it's his FP.

I wish him well. Sometimes I felt the RSF sort of dumped him or held him down. He seems like a nice guy and I hope he skates the heck out of Ten's program.

Good for Sergei, he is skating on his own terms even after having been slighted by his Fed at some crucial times in favour of others. In a way, he is continuing Denis’ legacy through his choreography and I think this honour will give him further inspiration to put out great skates.

The fed tried very hard to get rid off him, but they can't. He's better and stronger than that. The fact that Sergei collaborated with Denis sends shivers down my spine. He will put everything into that programme, because it probably has the deepest meaning a performance ever had to him.
Yes, babe, you're in your prime. Show them that you still belong. I wish him so well and I'm sad that I haven't got any holidays or money left to go to Nepela. Please skating gods, make him go to the GPF!!!

I have to admit I almost did, at last year's Nepela. He was doing some jogging in the corridors, often passing quite close to me as I was just standing there sipping my tea, thinking "Would it be OK if I told him good luck and 'I really like your skating?' " In the end I decided against it, as he was apparently trying to concentrate on running and was giving me a cautious eye when he noticed me staring. At least I got to give him a present, lol.
Once again, fingers crossed for Sergei this season! Hope he stays injury free and has a blast performing those programs.
