Yuzuru Hanyu: 2018-2019

Thank you for your hard work. Amazing how "constant" (to borrow Yuzuru's term) the quad salchow has become when before detractors derided it as "a planned fall," and some concerned fans even thought it best for Yuzuru to simply junk the jump. Yuzuru stubbornly kept it, knowing a second kind of quad frees up his layout, and eventually owned the jump as I predicted he would. I wonder now where PCS will get a big hit in case of serious mistakes whether such a strategy will still be as viable.

Same thought! The success rate of Yuzu's solo 4S surprised me, too. I expected it to be good, but not that good. In average he lands 8 of 9 attempts clean. That's amazing.
And he has received very good GOE for it as well (2,12 in average). Only his 3A had better GOE among his solo jumps.

#Sidenote: I wonder how that 4T+1Lo+3S combo will develop... Must be pretty good in practice, if Yuzu still includes it in his free.

How many hour drive is it from TCC to this year's ACI?

Minutes. 30 to be exact.

Also, Yuzu clarified nothing is going on with Med, so it'd be ridiculous to feel the need to stay at another hotel because of that. They'll likely be at GPF together and Worlds too and will have other things on their mind aside from being concerned about that.

Also on a side note, I wonder if Yuzu already visited Japan to complete his costumes with Sato Itomi by now? I'm sure it's ready... But just curious because some skaters change their costume quite late in the season.

Ideally, it might take them just over a half hour or so. But GTA traffic can be extremely bad (as my partner and I were reminded for nth time this past Sunday), so it could take significantly longer. Still, not very far at all. Theoretically Team Cricket and other skaters training in Toronto could just stay at home and commute in. But if they want to avoid traffic delays on their way to morning practice, or just want someplace nearby to retreat to during long breaks/overnight they could certainly stay at a hotel in the area. With their TCC and other potential connections it also wouldn't shock me if one of the local bigwigs living in Oakville quietly offered Y's team their home during the competition. Note: I have no idea which of the above options he and his team would choose, or if all are a genuine possibility. I am sure they will do as they feel is best. As a Torontonian, I cherish his and the other skaters' privacy here and hope he is able to rest well, wherever he is during ACI down-time.

Strange, because I remember a post from an admin thanking the OP of that thread for bringing those news to the Edge. Do posts about specific skaters now get merged to their Fanfests after a while or...? I confess I found it confusing how Stephen's thread got merged to his Fanfest but others were allowed to remain, so I guess none now can remain?

Admins regularly merge Yuzu related stuff to this thread. They don't want extra threads outside of fan fests I presume.

I am excited for his costumes. I will grow to love it once it is out.

About the 4A, since Yuzu is studying human anatomy and combining it with mathematics.
I am going geek mode and thinking if he tried to compute the following:
1. Based on his height, how much he should weigh so he can leap the 6 meters needed?
2. Based on the force required for the jump, how much muscle density he needs so his body can withstand the landing? (Poor ankle)
3. Is there a possible way to get cushioning on skating shoes to soften landings?
4. Can the skating blade be varied in terms of material and thickness so he can leap and land better?
5. How much speed does he need to leap then rotate those 4.5 revolutions?
6. How does he count when he is in the air? I mean how can you visualize you are gonna leap then prepare for landing.

Thinking about it is :shocked: Go Yuzu, you are also pushing science not only sports.

If he's taken a few physics and calculus classes, the theoretical calculations of those should be pretty easy. 1, 2, and 5 are related. He could probably pick a weight, speed, or muscle density and calculate the other two from that. Of course, theoretical calculations won't make it much easier to actually do it!

Yeah, I had been staying away from that thread. I wasn't thrilled to see some of the comments here...

I wonder if Yuzu will ever get to hear a live lecture at Waseda before he graduates..? He didn't have a normal campus life but at least he had a fairly normal high school life.

We do indeed love to have news in the Edge!! In fact, we encourage it! However, as with all other threads, the discussion inevitably runs it's course and starts going in a different direction. When that happens, we still want to preserve it, and therefore we move it to the FF

If for some reason, there are some way off topic posts that are negative or otherwise don't belong, simply report them so we can review them for possible removal.

There could be residential schools (where they turn up for anything from 3-6 days for intensive face-to-face teaching) that he has done or will do, but the Uni keeps the news that he's there under wraps. I studied my degree and honours year distance/online before there was much online (and trust me, studying at a high level distance/online is considerably tougher than oncampus) and they had at least one for many subjects.

Of course, I could be wrong, and he simply watches all lectures online.... but whatever method, knowing he's doing it - at a world-ranked university - the hard way only increases my respect for him.
